    you can also put a wet towel on top of the cage. this helps with humidity and it's cheap

    Im looking to get a ball python when I move out next week, and your channel had all the info I've been looking for. From humidity, to feeding, and a full setup of the python enclosure: all of these have given me new insight and a better understanding of reptiles! Thank you for that, good sir! And keep doing what you do best!

    I found that dried moss holds quite a bit of humidity and can help bump it up a bit. Plus it's quite cheap seeing as you can get it at the dollar store if you live near one.

    Rather than simply blocking part of the top opening of the enclosure for a screen top/aquarium setup, I’ve had a good experience with placing a clean damp towel over 1/4-1/3 of the top to increase humidity.

    It's more humid in my house than what's average. I do have a dehumidifier, but the heat of the heat lamp usually keeps my enclosure dry enough. If it gets too dry I use a small misting squirt bottle to spray distilled water in the enclosure every once in a while.

  • @Cavegeckosol
    @Cavegeckosol 7 лет назад +2

    I just use a humidifier, not a reptile one, in the general room in which I keep my reptiles. I spray them daily, and the humidifier does the rest. As for keeping animals drier, a lamp of some sort (even an incandescent house lamp) does wonders.

Are there other devices I could use to take measurements? I wanna make sure I'm getting accurate readings before I start worrying.

    If you wanna lower your humidity fast then just simply turn on your cage light and take out the water bowl till you get a smaller water bowl cause your water bowl is probably to big if it’s rising the humidity in a cage. And after awhile without water bowl in cage and the light on it will lower your humidity.

    I have a dwarf boa who is having trouble shedding because of the humidity being low. He has aspen bedding, a big water bowl with a heat lamp hanging over it, and temps stay between 85-92 F and i spray very often so its around 60% but humidity drops quickly shortly after i do, i need some help

    • @hazard-13
      @hazard-13 6 лет назад +1

      Switch to a different bedding! I had this problem when I got my first ball python as well. Aspen is really drying, and wetting it to help with humidity can make it rot. Try cypress mulch (like Forest Floor by ZooMed) or coconut fiber (like Eco Earth by ZooMed). I personally use Eco Earth for both of my ball pythons, and it holds moisture well, drying out after about a month.

    • @Pokegirl1005
      @Pokegirl1005 7 лет назад

      I don't know if you've already found the answer, but how do you care for your snake? Do you spray the whole enclosure with water? Do you have live plants or a waterfall? Is the water bowl warming up because of the heat mat or heat lamp (whichever you have). How's the ventilation in the tank? And how is it outside of the tank? Could it be that your water bowl is really light and the snake just pushes it around or digs underneath it which makes it spill water?
      Just trying to come up with reasons why it's so humid. I hope it helps somewhat

  • @marandamarquez6218
    @marandamarquez6218 6 лет назад

    do you have to have both a heat mat and a bulb because my parents don’t want a heat mat because it might burn the snake but i don’t know how i would keep it warm at night

    • @burnout1256
      @burnout1256 6 лет назад +1

      maranda marquez snakes like ball pythons prefer a heat mat rather than a lamp because belly heat is a little more important. If you're worried about the snake being burned then you can get a thermostat that plugs into the heat mat and set it at around 90 degrees or so (adjust if necessary) and place the mat UNDER the glass enclosure, make sure there's about an inch of substrate inside the enclosure to add a little layer of insulation so the snake isn't laying directly on the heat 😊

      I think it will hurt the snake and give it an infection so I don’t think you should use it try pet safe scents or something

    What are good ways to decrease the humidity? I'm in Michigan and I'm planning to get a ball python. It will be in a tank, but in the tank the humidity stays around 70% to almost 90%. I keep fans on and the air conditioning and outside of the tank it's around 50% humidity. I use forest floor bedding and I know it keeps in humidity so I removed a lot so there isn't much in there but the humidity doesn't decrease. I use a heat pad that gets the the warm side to the basking temperature which is around 85-90 and sometimes use a light but not much and the cool side is around 75-80.

    • @fennell7968
      @fennell7968 7 лет назад

      Vanessa best thing to do is completely change the bedding. Aspen works great as its quite absorbent and very cheap. Ventilation in your actual room is important so keep a window open as much as possible. If you don't have your Python yet leave the enclose lid/ doors open and turn off you heat mat often especially if it's warm in your house. Ball pythons don't really need both heat sources so you can choose one which is best for you. Make sure you get a thermostat though :)

      It’s too high. Their humidity should be around 30-40%. A great way to lower humidity is to buy a small cheap fan that blows over top of the lid. Another way to decrease humidity is to get a mesh lid or take the lid off completely

    How often should i spray with water?

    • @fennell7968
      @fennell7968 7 лет назад

      TokeDenOP It really depends on the animal you have. I have a corn snake so he dosent need a high humidity constantly for he comes from deserts. So when he's in shed or showing signs of being in blue I spray his viv with water just once a day. My viv has vents which stops it from getting too damp.

    • @tokec8471
      @tokec8471 7 лет назад

      I had to corn snakes. And a ball python.

    • @fennell7968
      @fennell7968 7 лет назад

      TokeDenOP Okay buy a hydrometer for each tank and try and keep the humidity at 50% and 70% when they shed. Spray the water when needed but not on the side where the heat source is. If the tank gets too damp air it out and don't spray. Good luck :)

    • @tokec8471
      @tokec8471 7 лет назад

      Shall I set the hydrometer in the hot site or the cold site?

    • @fennell7968
      @fennell7968 7 лет назад

      TokeDenOP Which side does your snake hang out most? If you can't decide you can put it anywhere, as long as it's near the bottom of the tank as that's mostly where your snake will be surrounded by the humidity. You also will need to be able to see it of course ! :)

Tell them you want to do it with them as a project to bring you closer together. If they still say no, unfortunately there is nothing you can do. It doesn't take too long to become an adult. I promise it will be okay. :)

Some just won't budge. I'll definitely be getting one when I move haha
