Thanks so much for this endorsement Lee! It actually only takes an hour or two to smarten up a clump of bamboo but the results can really give your garden a lift.
Thank you Laura I just needed reassuring that what I was doing was OK and I do exactly what you do, but I might be a little braver with my thinning! I have a golden Bamboo but have mostly trimmed the black and variegated ones I have but shall now do the Gold as yours is beautiful. I also use the bamboo to make structures ..if you put large stems either side of a path in a veg bed you can make an arch over the path with the whippy bits bending across to make a pretty arch to walk under and pick your french beans! it lasts about 6 years before the canes dry and break across the top
Glad you found the video helpful. Once they are established bamboos are tough things which seem to be able to take a hard thinning out without suffering a setback. Love the idea of the french bean arch!
Your bamboo may be one of the more vigorous types, but its definitely worth giving it a good thin one and seeing if you can get it back under control - good luck!
That hasn't been a problem for me. Even before the leaf stripping some of my canes tip over a bit at the edge and to keep the clump tidy I take these errant canes out at the base. I haven't noticed any increase in the canes bending after the the pruning procedure, bamboo leaves are very light and you're only maintaining the thickest and strongest canes when you prune so for me it hasn't been an issue at all. Hope this is helpful, best wishes Laura
Thank you for showing the full process with clear explanation - stunning finish and useful ‘by products’ 😊

My pole bamboo is growing out of control. I’ll try out the steps you suggested. Great video.

Great idea, do the leaves grow back? How often do you water in summer when it hasn’t rained?
No the leaves do not grow back, only the new canes will have the lower leaves. I'm in Scotland - so no need to water - even in summer!😅😉
But if we leave the top full of leaves, they bend because of the weight. Thought?
