I have filmed in many UK seaside towns that have seen better days. Brits used to flock to their native seaside for holidays but since the advent of cheap foreign package holidays the great British seaside has suffered much decline. When I visit the British seaside and ask why the resorts are so in decline, locals often mention cheap package holidays as a major cause. Since the 1960's destinations overseas have offered warmer, sunnier weather and cheap food and drink to holidaying Brits. The dreary expensive British coastal towns struggle to compete. When I ask people what place they think of when I say 'Brits Abroad' they often say Benidorm, perhaps the original package holiday destination in Spain. It is a mega-developed high rise resort on the Costa Blanca. It has attained a rather negative stereotype over the years as a tacky, inauthentic tourist trap full of British bars that cater to loutish and yobby British tourists. I came to investigate for myself: Is Benidorm still a tacky exclave for unruly Brits or has it diversified and does it offer much more?

Mate places like Benidorm, Torremolinos, the German and Brit occupied parts of Mallorca (there are actual German police deployed in the German parts of ''Malle'') represent less than 1% of Spain's total surface area. Spain is huge and mostly empty, 90% of the population live in 30% of the country i.e. the coastal areas and around Madrid in the centre. The other 70% of the landmass is pretty much empty. Even if you're in places like Barcelona once you're away from the Ramblas area, you're unlikely to bump into tourists.

Do you know how much 1.5 trillion pounds would buy? Since this Tory government was voted for by the 60 million ordinary subjects of the crown in 2010, they have borrowed more than 1,5 trillion pounds, that is enough to have paid every nurse more than inflation pay rises, and recruited, trained and housed many more, and enough to have added many more police staff, and paid them all well over inflation pay awards, we could also have built the entire planned HS2 and several more such lines, to adequately connect every part of this little island, and we could have built every one of the 2.5 million homes that are currently needed to house the population properly. We could have resurfaced every road in the country, built new ones and widened every bridge to accomodate rail, road and cycle lanes, we could have repaired and kept open every fire station, every court and police station, and we could have added more where needed. And the 40 new hospitals could be completed, fully staffed, equipped and up and running, with just half of this 1.5 trillion. But instead our government, that we voted for, just gifted all that money to thier friends, relatives and donors, in exchange for a damn good remuneration for themselves. While during all that time they told us to "look over there at the refugee, or the person a bit worse off than you, he or she is making your life terrible" . Aren't we all suckers, eh ? And then they take away our freedom to work, live, mary or retire in the sun, with the world beating criminal Brexit scam.

Big respect to those that go a bit deeper than just the same old British alchoholic clubs eating fish and chips and to those who bother to learn some Spanish and experience local culture a bit. Thistle Bar is every stereotype of Scottish low class subculture. Yet a degree of British people, have issues when stereotypes are placed on them. Its either have the label or don't act and live in a way that gives those labels. No way would I go there unless you paid me... A LOT! If anything I found this shameful to be British.

From what I know, a lot of especially elderly Spaniards. have warm feelings towards Benidorm. It was kind of the first holiday resort in the Mediterranean for Spanish people from further north. It's happened to me in a village in the province of Soria that I got into a smalltalk with my wife and an elderly lady from town. Telling her that we live in Valencia - my wife is Spanish and I am a German who's been living in Valencia for 30 years now and speaks Spanish fluently -, it turned out that she had been to Benidorm and loved the place. Benidorm is also visited by many Spaniards. Some love the place, others loathe the place and for many others it's somewhere in between, rather preferring other places. This is my impression at least. But anyway, being a place if cheap tourism makes it attractive to the low income population from further north.

I think Benidorm is similar to what Blackpool used to be - the place where regular folk went for the seaside and to relax with either the family or yer mates. Of course nobody is on the beach in winter, but just being able to walk in the sunshine, even with a gansy on, opens your brainstem up. And of course a few drinks and the chance of a hook-up doesn't hurt. My guess is there isn't much crime apart from drunkenness - I hear Ibiza got pretty bad for that, with the locals finally putting their foot down. The front reminds me of Fortaleza, a city in north-eastern Brazil that I visited a little while back, but believe me they are a world apart otherwise. I would be interested to hear how the locals still view the Brits or the Dutch visitors, in comparison. Enjoy your stay.

Benidorm did not disappoint! There were Brits of all flavours! Most noticeable were Glasgow Rangers fans with big bellies and lots of tattoos, plenty of sunburned Englishmen from all over (not so many cockneys but lots of different northern English accents).

Benidorm has something for everyone- if you’re a culture vulture then the old town and tapas alley huge array of tapas and pinchos from all over Spain-north and south which is uncommon. If you’re a fitness freak then the poniente side where you can run for miles along Sandy beaches and swim in(unlike the UK) clean sea. If you want carnage then there’s the square and the new town which is generally only where stags/hens and party people go- a tiny part of Benidorm. Like you said I guarantee 99% of people that criticise it haven’t been. Some weird kind of snobbishness/classism. Same here and why would I want to go to another country and have a Sunday roast?! I want to eat their local cuisine, not British food.

@@clondon84I'm sure you did. Here was the result....
      Wales: 25%
      North West: 16%
      Midlands: 23%
      USA: 18%
      Benidorm: 19%
I'm not saying don't go to Benidorm - I watched the video and gave it a thumbs up. Just don't bother asking if you already know what the plan is.
