As an LP player, one of the many things I love about your show is the way that you demo pretty much everything through this beast. It always seems to me that the majority of YT pedal demos are done on strats.
I can so relate to this video....I must have tried and owned numerous Les Pauls until i played a friend's Les Paul from the 70's and realized what I had been missing all along....a GREAT Les Paul...so that led me to the Custom Shop journey; I tried quite a few custom shops and they were defintely a cut above the standards but still I didn't have that magical bonding moment and then finally I picked up this 2016 R9 VOS in bourbanburst and I knew right away upon feeling the neck and playing it that it was mine. You really have to try a bunch of them to know what is right and what is not. This was about 3-4 years ago and I'm still rocking it.
Despite RUclips/streaming shortcomings, yoo get the life and tone of your guitars and rigs to come through loud and clear. You should become the engineers and producers for the current age - an ear for tone for the current distribution outlets. Fantastic work and thanks to you both.
Best change I've ever made to any of my Historic Les Pauls has been to put in True Vintage Taper pots and quality PIO caps. Really opens up the tone and gives you so much more variance in the volume and tone controls. I would recommend it to anybody that owns a Les Paul.
I've got a lemonburst custom shop les paul standard too, and I love it. While it's head and shoulders above the non custom shop models, it's not in the same class as the 58's and 59's. I can't imagine how fantastic yours is to play! She's a beauty!!
Paul Stacey is one hell of a player! saw him and his brother play with Scott McKeon at a pub in Christchurch at the start of the year. Great guitar that. low output pickups on that sound amazing!
First of all, that's a gorgeous guitar! I'm not sure that I would go for the '58 neck profile personally, but I must say that I prefer your playing on that over the Teles. You definitely play differently on it. It's my favorite guitar among those I've seen you or Mick play. I'm so jealous!
+Jack Stolz This is the thing about LPs (Mick here). The good reissues are always lighter sounding. They can get heavy, but they have so much subtlety too. Wonderful things!
Absolutely adore that les paul, that top is utterly stunning! Pedals are a bit of a new thing for me (thanks largely to your influence) any chance of a "my first pedal board" or "best lower end/budget pedals" for the various general types video?
+coffeewaldo Who's 'Billy Rowe ? I've know of Normie Rowe and Billy Thorpe but haven't heard of Billy Rowe ? Is he Normie Rowe's son/nephew or another relative ?
Nobody was getting aggressive with you. I said Billy Rowe is a guitarist. His group is not well known but he knows everybody or quite a lot of people in the business regarding guitarists etc. do that always helps as far as getting into the business. I think I was tired and didn't want to explain I also couldn't tell if u were being sarcastic so I let it go no problems mate. I see u were serious. He runs a great business and his guitars are made with extreme quality. Filling a niche that a certain company seems to be lacking in unless u pay big big bucks. No offense man.
coffeewaldo If that reply was to me Cheers and no drama. I never got to see the full txt that you posted anyway as it came up on my list but every time that I tried to get to see the whole post it seemed to be taken down ( maybe by the Pedal Show idk ). Anyway I'm from Australia, haven't heard of him but should have just googled him in the first place. Likewise mate no agro or drama from my end. Have a good one.
It truly is a beautiful guitar Dan :) I always love it when I see you using it at the start of a video because I know I'm in for a great watch and listen and it always puts a smile on my face. I love the tone you get when you play it and thanks for the fantastic insight and history into this guitar Dan, looking forward to more videos from the show!!
My 2016 R8 has a big neck, too. Even though many say this is not historically correct, I love it as it is, and I also think it contributes to the great tone it has. My story was similar, I was expecting a plaintop, hoping for a good one, and what I got was an even better tone plus a crazy looking close-to-Pearly-Gates top. The Custom Buckers were great, but the Wizz A4 PAFs I did put in are even better. I couldn’t be happier.
Yep got one of those too. Mines a R8 VOS lemon burst. Amazing tone when the volume is rolled off, something I would not have expected from a LP, it something I associate with strats and teles but not Gibsons.
Oh! That's the fantastic and rare birdseye-top guitar. I'm so jelous! I've got flamy '14 lemonburst r8 and '99 ltd standard with incredible 2-piece birdseye top with aufull carving and cherryburst. How I wish I could combine 2 guitars in 1 like Yours! Birdseye is great easter maple, it gives those unbelievable highs! Great guitar, great owner!
Ox4's sound awesome, I've got wolfetone's, bare knuckles, lollars, duncan custom shop, sanford magnetics...all great, and now ox4's are the next on my list to try. Based in the sounds you get, I'll be very happy with them
Wow! That truly is a lovely Les Paul! Certainly my favorite finish as well! I'm going to have to look into some of those Ox4 p'ups, they sound fantastic! Cheers!
Beautiful guitar! With that rig and those pedals, a $99 First Act would sound good. Seems like your just the folks to do a pedal show. :) My burstbucker II's sound very close to those pickups. Holy grails might be a fun try on that beauty. Enjoying your channel! cheers
I was never a Les Paul guy. Always thought it sounded muddled and extremely bright at the same time (in my clumsy hands, of course. a lot of players can make it sound brilliant). Then I came across the Melody Maker 2014 edition, which has thinner body (but maple top still), maple neck and P90s. I guess it's probably a monstrosity for the true LP fan, but it worked for me.
That's not hyperbole either. It's a standout on a show filled with fantastic sounding guitars. I suppose I should qualify that by saying, "best sounding recurring appearance guitar", not like Jimmy Page's Royal Albert Hall Black Beauty or anything. Let's be reasonable:)
H Dan: love the Les Paul. I'm curious- I can't tell from the video, but it has a "spalted" or "burl" appearance. Was this some sort of special order? Usually Custom Shop LPs have either a plain top or a "tiger stripe" type top. Regardless, she's quite a looker, and more importantly, sounds gorgeous both "acoustic" and amplified. I see why you love it so. Cheers!
This mirrors my own intentions - I put the OX4 low winds in my ‘57 Historic to get a fat neck and more Jimmy Page tone than Slash. Middle position is 100% The Ocean solo tone. It’s perfect for the purpose.
Amazing looking and sounding guitar! I too love bright guitars and I really couldn't find a Gibson LP that would suit me, most of them were too dark or too heavy. And then one day I ran in to that Momose LP... Has all I was ever looking in a LP (check youtube for them). Love your vids! Cheers
But Dan ....... how would the neck pickup sound without the cover on?! Sure you wouldn't like a Mare on this also - just kidding it sounds ACE my friend! Mick is sssoooooo jealous, some days he wears camo.
Gday Dan - really great sounding Les Paul... I think Gibson made a 'Custom Authentic' model back in the early 2000s which came stock with Grovers... could be one of those? Great videos btw... keep up the good work!
It would be interesting to know which other pickups you tried in that guitar because you mentioned it. I have a Les Paul that has a big neck and it is very loud acoustically but it's not bright. Unfortunately it has Classic 57s in it which make it way too muddy although the 57s can work fine in some guitars. I tried Seymour Seth Lovers and they worked fine but they have to go back in another guitar. I also changed the pots from 300k to 500k. By the way, always check this first because Gibson has used 300k pots in many Les Pauls. There are lots of good pickups but a pickup can work fine in one guitar and not another which makes it difficult to get this right.
Dan & Mick, please tell me when the Carpe Diem will be available again. I need that pedal in the absolute worst way possible.... Also, I love the show :)
Sorry Dan I'm more interested in how you use the Keeley 30ms pedal. You use two amps so I assume you are in double tracking pro mode? And then is that Abby mode? Thanks. Love this channel... You have taught me so much!
I tend to have trouble with Les Pauls because they are often weight relieved to the point where the tone really suffers. yours must have the perfect ratio of mahogany to maple top, cause the tone is still huge.
+Drew Anderson No weight relief in that one Drew. One of the massive differences between 'normal' Les Pauls and the period-correct reissues from Gibson Custom is the timber selection. Nice and light in many cases!
+Lawrence Gillespie That way great tone lies, in our opinion. We're not sure what heavy rock means any more, but for all the rock that makes any sense to us... PAFs all the way.
This makes me happy. I see so many things trying to talk about how it's not a real thing and I wonder if the people that say so have ever tried it and if so if the have working ears. I get it if you don't like the tradeoffs associated with 50's wiring or the tone, but to say that it's cork sniffing is hilarious!!!

I think they call them Customs or Deluxe, but look killer and do the job as good as any, love them!! Thanks for all your hard work on RUclips, much appreciated!
Just checked with Mark at OX4.
Dan's pickups are low wind with Alnico 4 magnets.
He responds very quickly. I will enjoy doing business with him.
WinnieRoo1138 Thank you for answering my question before I asked!
I've been to the Chicago music exchange. As a European who's used to tiny guitar shops with a hand full of Gibsons, CME is heaven.
Probably one of the best sounding lp neck pickup clean tones ever. Congrats on owning such a sweet Les Paul!
+Hollis Prince cheers H, yep, everytime play it I do pinch myself :)
This is the first Les Paul that I actually thought sounded really really good. So much life and warmth in it. Congratulations on finally finding it!
As an LP player, one of the many things I love about your show is the way that you demo pretty much everything through this beast. It always seems to me that the majority of YT pedal demos are done on strats.
Own many LP’s and recently bought an 07’ R8… has an amazing/magical tone I’ve never heard before. It plays itself. My favorite guitar ever.
Those clean tones in particular are absolutely magical.
+MangoChutneyMan yep, it's a glorious thing
I can so relate to this video....I must have tried and owned numerous Les Pauls until i played a friend's Les Paul from the 70's and realized what I had been missing all along....a GREAT Les Paul...so that led me to the Custom Shop journey; I tried quite a few custom shops and they were defintely a cut above the standards but still I didn't have that magical bonding moment and then finally I picked up this 2016 R9 VOS in bourbanburst and I knew right away upon feeling the neck and playing it that it was mine. Fantastic work and thanks to you both.
It’s a 2001 from the serial number. Looks and sounds great. Love the show! Cheers

Just bought a set of OX4 Low Winds - excited to hear them!
I've got a lemonburst custom shop les paul standard too, and I love it. While it's head and shoulders above the non custom shop models, it's not in the same class as the 58's and 59's. I can't imagine how fantastic yours is to play! She's a beauty!!
first time I hear such a sweet clean Les Paul sound.
Paul Stacey is one hell of a player! saw him and his brother play with Scott McKeon at a pub in Christchurch at the start of the year. Great guitar that. low output pickups on that sound amazing!
The opening tones in this video are absolutely thunderous. Fantastic.
I generally dislike the flame tops on most LPs but that finish is really cool.
Can i live inside that studio? So many great toys! Wonderful guitar Dan!
Dan, that is one stunning guitar and I totally get your enthusiasm.
That fuzz tone is absolutely amazing
First of all, that's a gorgeous guitar! I'm not sure that I would go for the '58 neck profile personally, but I must say that I prefer your playing on that over the Teles. You definitely play differently on it. It's my favorite guitar among those I've seen you or Mick play. I'm so jealous!
I love the top end on that neck pickup. So clear.
+Jack Stolz This is the thing about LPs (Mick here). The good reissues are always lighter sounding. They can get heavy, but they have so much subtlety too. Wonderful things!
I agree- best looking Les Paul, color is great and seems a bit less glossy. Fantastic tone too- nice playing there Dan.
Just re watching... sounds so sweet Dan! Hope to catch up soon
Absolutely adore that les paul, that top is utterly stunning!
Pedals are a bit of a new thing for me (thanks largely to your influence) any chance of a "my first pedal board" or "best lower end/budget pedals" for the various general types video?
+Andrew Astin yep! Cheers Andrew, and thanks for watching!
Were going to need to see that 60s SG JR now. Dream guitar.

Typos there. Also I wasn't sure I wanted to post this on a video about gibsons.

Very nice LP
Love the progression you're playing at 3:17.
3:18 just sold me on the OX4 pickups. 😮
My 2016 R8 has a big neck, too. Even though many say this is not historically correct, I love it as it is, and I also think it contributes to the great tone it has.

way huge guitar tones!

The Artist 20 and the Sheriff 44 sound great together.
Beautiful guitar! Congratulations! With the Tone Bender... Ahhhh...
Are those the alnico 5 humbuckers from OX4? That really is a wonderful sounding guitar, particularly with the Mallard or the Hamstead. Glorious.
First I've heard of OX4 Will check em out I usually like A2 tho but not too big a difference
Awesome Les Paul! Congratulations!
2001 Custom Authentic. Standard with Grovers. Very nice.
Yay! Cheers Fellas.
Lovely guitar, and what a great fuzz at the end!
+Mario Cáceres Pigdog MkII Tone Bender. Cheers!
G'day Dan, I really love these vids you and Mick are doing. Cheers.
+D Michael James cheers D ;)
That's a really fine looking guitar! Love it!
Killer tones Dan..
Beautiful guitar! With that rig and those pedals, a $99 First Act would sound good. Seems like your just the folks to do a pedal show. :) My burstbucker II's sound very close to those pickups. Holy grails might be a fun try on that beauty. Enjoying your channel! cheers

That is a sweet guitar! I have never been a fan of full sized Les Pauls, but that guitar is awesome! You’re making me want to go look for one. Haha
Awesome series of videos! I really like it! Thank you!
Best sounding guitar on RUclips. Full Stop. It never disappoints:)
Can you speak to the tailpiece - is it aluminum and is it tight to the body?
+intrsoul You have no idea how happy you've just made him. :0)
+intrsoul It's lightweight as they should be, and I'm still persuading him to screw it down and string over... We'll see.
+intrsoul Ah, way to hurt a guy! We know what you mean. ;0)
Great guitar and great playing
Does you love of bright guitars somehow connect with your love of fuzz pedals?
+Jens Larsen I've never put the two together before, but maybe :)
That Pedal Show Sure, just wondered.
Keep making a great show! I learn useful stuff and you guys are very entertaining!
Lovely Les Paul Dan! I hope you'll do a video on your Krautster II next!
Amazing Lester
Love the new series! Well done.
H Dan: love the Les Paul. I'm curious- I can't tell from the video, but it has a "spalted" or "burl" appearance. Was this some sort of special order? You guys should check out the new ehx hot tubes. I like to know how you feel about it. It's personally my new favorite
This mirrors my own intentions - I put the OX4 low winds in my ‘57 Historic to get a fat neck and more Jimmy Page tone than Slash. Middle position is 100% The Ocean solo tone. It’s perfect for the purpose.
High action with 11s tuned to E? Damn, Dan. That IS a MAN SETUP
Stev0theBohunk i think he said 11 48s which isn’t that big of a deal.
Gotta have the action up some for better tone Strings vibrate more when away from the neck a bit
Lovecthe top and color.
Cheers
Sounds great clean or dirty.....but the cleans,wow.................
Love that guitar!! It's beautiful and sounds so tasty!!!
But Dan ....... how would the neck pickup sound without the cover on?! Sure you wouldn't like a Mare on this also - just kidding it sounds ACE my friend! Mick is sssoooooo jealous, some days he wears camo.
OX4, Throbak, and Wizz. THE best PAF pickup replicas on the market, period.
Yours is gorgeous and it's rare to see a birdseye maple top. 1958 reissues are a much better deal than 1959's.
+PlayerX Agreed. Once you see them being made, it's hard to understand why the 59s are so much more!
Gday Dan - really great sounding Les Paul... I think Gibson made a 'Custom Authentic' model back in the early 2000s which came stock with Grovers... could be one of those? Great videos btw... keep up the good work!
+Steve Roberts I'll check it out, cheers Steve ;)
what a glamor!!
It would be interesting to know which other pickups you tried in that guitar because you mentioned it. I have a Les Paul that has a big neck and it is very loud acoustically but it's not bright. Also assuming that you have more guitars, do you have any "budget" guitar?
I'm waiting for Dan's Nik Huber. Such an awesome guitar
+Joel Ross on the way Joel :)
Dan & Mick, please tell me when the Carpe Diem will be available again. I need that pedal in the absolute worst way possible....
Also, I love the show :)
Are you going to do a vid on your Nik Huber?
You should, Dan!
My Krauster is arriving tomorrow...do the Huber next!
Sorry Dan I'm more interested in how you use the Keeley 30ms pedal. You use two amps so I assume you are in double tracking pro mode? And then is that Abby mode? Thanks. Love this channel... You have taught me so much!
When you grabbed it and ran out of the studio, you payed for it right? xD
mark stow makes superb paf replica pickups..
+fretboarder sure does
i had some in a tom bartlett burst replica def one of the best ive owned they nailed everything i flung at them..
I love it when you play the classic rock-y stuff, quite fitting given your nationality (Australian aren't you?)
+Yoseph McJoe cheers Y, yep, 100% true blue ;)
Chuffed, haha, such an old school Sydney word
Drool. Beautiful example of a Les Paul.
Nice and light in many cases!
awesome. Please tell me you're going to cover your Krautster.
OX4 pickups seem to be getting great reviews.
Peter Marshall they're the pups?
Nice guitar! I'm thinking that lower output pickups are the way to go, unless you only play heavy rock.
+Lawrence Gillespie That way great tone lies, in our opinion. We're not sure what heavy rock means any more, but for all the rock that makes any sense to us... PAFs all the way.
Very nice , weight?
R8's are where's at!
That Les Paul top - I love the birdseye maple. Yet, when viewed from and angle, it looks spalted. Is it both?
What a great Les Paul!! Do you use 50`s wiring or the standard 60`s wiring?
+Rolf Dinter 50's wiring :)))
Fuck yes! That is a beautiful Les Paul.
+Corey Mineard yep, she’s a beaut :)
The main things I don't like about Les Paul guitars is the scale length of 24/3/4 inches.
The fret spacing the the way the strings flap about, due to the shorter scale length.
ruscoe lee try a heavier gauge?
I did and still didn't like the fret spacing.
You should put the Grover green key tulip tuners on it, they are amazing and would look so good with that body, and you can just use one screw if you don't want to drill a new hole in the head stock. that's what I do on my guitars when the tuner key holes just don't match up, but I'm not a certified to give advice by any stretch of the imagination, but I've used those Grover's on many guitars of all price range. My pet peve is when a really nice vintage guitar, ok, Les Paul comes with chrome tuners. I know they are good tuners but it just irks me to no other. Just me, love the green keys! I think they call them Customs or Deluxe, but look killer and do the job as good as any, love them!! Thanks for all your hard work on RUclips, much appreciated!
that is how a neck pickup on a les paul is supposed to sound! not the round bass heavy thing the modern standards have.
What is that fuzz? Sounds glorious!
+Luis Guillermo Martinez Pinzon Pigdog MK2 Tone Bender
Under £ 9? That's not bad. ;-)
Awesome! Stock pots/caps or aftermarket?
