In this episode, we meet the new transfer student, Shutarou Mendou (also known as Mendo). Mendo is a flamboyant character who makes a dramatic entrance by leaping out of a plane above Tomobiki High School. His arrival causes quite a stir among the students. Mendo quickly becomes popular with the girls due to his confident demeanor and good looks. However, he is disliked by the boys, especially Ataru Moroboshi. The class holds elections for the new class president, resulting in a tie between Mendo and Ataru. To settle the tie, Mendo challenges Ataru to a duel. The duel’s task is both absurd and dangerous: each participant must shoot an apple off their opponent’s head using a cannon. Lum, Ataru’s alien fiancée, gets involved, and chaos ensues. Despite the odds, Ataru manages to win the duel, leaving Mendo both ashamed and alive.
