I’ve already backed this and was excited for it, and I’ll still try it out of course, but I’m a bit disheartened to hear how little your group enjoyed this. I wonder if character choices impact level of enjoyment…
As an alternative perspective, I really liked the game BECAUSE of the simplicity and repetition. I play mainly heavier games (Oathsworn, Aeon Trespass, Awaken Realms, Middara etc) so for me, it was a nice break to play something that was quick and simple. So I actually agree with you on pretty much all points, though for me they were pro's.
I know you will be shocked to hear we went all in deluxe. But that being said i LOVE the AC stories and lore. Have played every version of the game so was excited to get this with the new version/expansion/episodes of the game.
I totally disagree respectfully. My group had an amazing time with this game when it first fulfilled and even years later we are still talking about some sessions and cool things that we did. But hey different strokes for different folks
Same. My gf and I love it. We switched to jaws of the lion for a bit and just switched back to AC bc we liked the story and liked the co-op moves that helped each character succeed., and just have more fun with it overall. The tutorial nature and buildup of the mechanics was fantastic. As a caveat we do have a dedicated game table and we do use the minis for D&D type ttrpgs. We like Trudvang and Freelancers too, so maybe we just like more straight forward games with stories and big production value.
Oh yeah, if you got a level four ability at level two that would nerf the game and pretty much ruin the experience. I also was terrible at stealth and lost the mission several times early on to having too many enemies on the board. I pretty much only played the first round or two in stealth and the rest was a regular combat fest except for the rare occasion where I could change it back to unalerted. I have the retail edition, so it's standees except for the 5 assassin figures. I'm very happy I went for the retail version as the majority of the figures were rarely on the board longer than a mission. I had fun with the game, but you're right that the excitement peters off a bit as you go, and that Bastiano was the WORST. I think we ended up enjoying it more than you guys did, and I wonder how much of that was game errors you guys encountered that seem to have not been present in the retail edition.
@@morgaknightgames yeah definitely played a factor in it, that was a bit frustrating. I think retail is ABSOLUTELY the way to go, the standees would have made the experience better I think. Glad you enjoyed it :)
Given that you and your group weren't really that pleased with the mechanics of the game, do you imagine you'll be taking much of a look at their upcoming game Gods Heist?
Great review! This has been on my shelf for about a year now, one day it'll be played. From the sound of it, it seems like a quicker campaign that won't over stay it's welcome. So I'm still excited to dive in when I get to it.
had i known there was going to be a cheaper, smaller retail edition, i totally would have waited for that instead of getting the collector's edition. i won't say i *regret* getting the uber edition... but yeah, it is the epitome of KS bloat. (good game, though!)
I got the retail edition really cheap and I actually really enjoyed it. Granted I didn't finish and also stopped around 2.5 but it was really fun till then. Like surprisingly fun. I generally like much more heavier games, but the stealth mechanism was new to me. I had Bastiano from start, but quickly swapped him to Claudio xD
Appreciate the review! The IP drew me into this one for sure. I've seen it relatively cheap at retail, so I'd still take a chance on this on a good sale.
Too late. Way too late. I already took an "all-in", because I wanted base + add-on, while there was no chance for anything outside the base game where I live. But hey, I generally stopped being too enthusiastic about KS games ;) it's IP is pulling me in and I still hope it will deliver. About it being a simplistic game, that surely might be a downside, but at the same time, I've played DnD adventure system game Tomb of Annihilation and enjoyed it, even when I already know whole story after I've played pc implementation of that exact board game expanded a bit because the board game is based on a classic DnD campaign book, so it was easy to add more "story" content to the game, keeping same mechanics. (Well, similar, pc version was a bit grindy to gear up). It also is a simple game with a lot of dice rolling, but generally it's incredibly simple "child campaign level" game, and we've enjoyed it. So yes, there is still hope and I hope it will be fully English. My group is not really multilingual and no, English is not our main language, which still means a bit of an issue while playing campaign games in English. 😅
@@soulreaver9137 I wouldn't worry about the English too much. The only large portion of text is on the event cards and they feel pretty clear. We figured out the French cards pretty easily so hopefully that will translate to you. Hope you end up liking it :)
@@clanechelon The tiles are very fast to set up since other than the main big tile you're just matching type (roof, ground, or canal). They're not unique, so no need for a fancy booklet.
Thank you for actually playing the full campaign and giving a great review of the experience. More of this, please.
Finally, someone who understands the English language. It's CANAL!
Exactly right. Cay-Null.

It is kind of the feeling I had about the game. It is a shame when an IP game falls a bit short gameplay wise. A recipe for heartache :p
Audio is crackling a bit and stuttering for me. But I love the coazy setting, keep the good spirits up!
I'm going to hold my breath until we get Middara coverage.
Awesome review. Sincere too, like when a reviewer would have liked to like it.
So I guess you are not getting that green Add-on box ?

2 min in and this game gets an F from me without even playing it. Tiles? Seriously? Is this 2018? We want a map booklet! Next!
I mean, this was crowdfunded in 2018...
Either the maps would have to be tiny or the booklet huge. Plus there are really only 4 tiles in the game, so it’s super quick to set up.
