Very helpful video, thank you. I am a complete beginner in skincare and have just started to try and build up a skincare routine in the past 2 weeks. I bought quite a lot of The Ordinary products 2 weeks ago, which I have been doing some research on for each one, but it can be hard to know how best to combine or layer each one when they have so many products. This video popped up on my recommended at just the right time. Things that helped me in this video: - use retonol as a night time treatment - this retinol is oil-based so use after cleansing and water-based serums, and before a moisturiser - apply to dry skin and let previous products absorb before a new application - apply 3x per week and potentially build up to daily, once per night if no irritation occurs - not to combine with other retinols, vitamin C, copper peptides and acids (e.g. lactic, glycolic, salicylic) It really helps to be told all of these things with examples (even if somebody else might already know some of them), because there are beginners like me who don't. Before watching this video, I have been using The Ordinary glycolic acid 7% toner before applying the retinol, which has fortunately not caused any irritation or flaking/peeling/redness so far, but none of the other videos I watched involving these two products have said not to combine, so now I will try to change this. The amount of Ordinary products definitely makes me do a lot of research, and even then there is still more to learn! P.S. I love your accent, really lovely to listen to. Looking forward to watching and learning more. :)
I got the Retinol 0.2% in Squalane around a year ago. Sadly I neglected my skincare a lot in this time because sometimes I was too lazy for it, I've been consistent the last 2 weeks and already see results. A good tip that worked for me to stop neglecting my skincare was to do it immediately after the last time I entered my house at night before I relax. I usually take out my dogs and I used to chill in the couch or my bed some time before going to sleep, now the first thing I do right after the last walk is go wash my face. I went for the simplest routine possible, my concerns being aging (I have so many expression lines at 21) and pimples that I usually get around my period so I'm not sure if I can get rid of them appearing but it works to make them go away faster and not leave marks, so retinol was the best option for me. I'm double cleansing daily and one day I exfoliate, the next I use my retinol and I leave one day for my skin to rest (I wear moisturizer daily). My skin didn't show any negative reaction to any of the products I introduced (2% BHA Exfoliant was also new to my skin). Thanks a lot for this video, it had all the information somebody needs to start on retinol and not hate it because of something we did wrong for not knowing better. I would just add to it: - Don't touch the dropper (applicator) either with your fingers nor your face. I want to say this because there are 2 clips in the video showing the application that way, this can contaminate your product once you dip the applicator back into it, just let the drops fall into your hand and apply it to your face. - SPF is your BFF! It is mentioned and also very important, if you don't like the feel of sunscreen find one that works for you and don't forget to reapply. While retinol is doing great things for your skin it is also making it more vulnerable to sun damage so if you use retinol but no sunscreen you might be making more harm than good to it. - It would be cool (but completely extra it's just a suggestion you don't have to do it your video is already great) if you add some research that you used for the video for us to read deeper into the topics you talked about. Thank you for taking the time to make the video!
The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 5% paired with TO Niacinamide Serum is magic on my sunspots...100% gone! Also use TO Vit C Poeder in the am under sunscreen. I promised myself 25 years ago after trying Tretinoin that I would never use it again when my skin turned into hamburger meat. With the granactive tech, I have results with zero irritation. ❤️
Been using The ordinary’s 1% retinol in squalene for 6 months. I like the product and have not found it irritating. Have not noticed much change in my skin, but it looks healthy
Hi. Thanks for sharing this amazing explanation. I started using the granactive retinoid 2% emulsion two weeks ago every second day before night sleep. My question: which one should I use for my matured darker African skin complexion? I'm looking for a healthy looking face without aging marks, pigmentation and to reduce facial lines. Hopefully I'll hear from you soon. Thanks in advance.
Not me starting with the strongest version (retinol 1%) 😭 I wish I researched better before purchasing lol but it’s probably too late to switch up now as I’ve almost finished the bottle. Thankfully my skin loves it and I’ve had almost no irritation whatsoever, it’s weirdly hydrating Thank you for the video tho, that’s the best guide to this line I’ve seen so far ❤

Thanks for watching guys! Let us know if you are currently using The Ordinary's Retinol or Granactive Retinoid and your experience with the skincare product?
Hi I am 55 year old and I suffer from Skin aging and hyperpigmentation and am using The Ordinary Retinol 1%, which Retinol product is suitable & effective for me please advice
I wish they would come up with a higher percentage of the emulsion I already used 3 bottles of that in a span of 1 year. And wonder if i should use the .5% in squalene but i dont like the squalene
I know the emulsion is so nice! If you don’t like the squalene I would try another brand with a higher %. We have a video coming out in 2 weeks on our favourite retinols
I was always afraid to try retinol because of its possible effects, I should start with Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion and do a patch test. Thank you!
Hi this was super helpful, is there a order you would recommend for me? I am a teenager that has suffered acne in the past. Since the retinoid goes up to only 5% for the ordinary should i go with the retinol line? as it goes up to 1% high strength. Thanks
@@leanev4019 yes, hylaronic acid is apparently useless. My routine is just retinol and then applying moisturiser a few hours later once it has set in. God bless
Since I couldn't find any studies on the effectiveness granactive retinoids and I'm stubborn, I started with the 0.5 retinol in squalane, hope my skin doesn't melt off lol I patch tested on my arm and didn't have a reaction Since I just started I apply it after a layer of moisturizer, since I've heard this makes it absorb more slowly. After a while I'll start putting it directly on the skin

I also used ascorbic acid 8% alpha arbutin 2% for unever skin. But it's still quite dull. And i have a bit of pigment on ny side cheeks and lover chin area. What should i use for that :/
steraic acid and lauric acid is fine in a cleanser, these are cleansing agents. Don't use leave on exfoliating acid serums such as lactic, glycolic or salicylic acid with retinol or retinoids :)
salicylic acid is great for milia! You can use granactive retinoid daily in the evening. However when you first start using it, start off slowly 3 x a week on alternative nights. Do not use on the same night as exfoliating x
a little confused if you could clarify. 1. Wouldn’t 1 or 2% be more advanced since it’s a higher concentration? To me it seems like you should start with 0.2 since it’s the lowest concentration. 2. Can I use anything with BHA OR AHA ( I use a toner ) or will I experience irritation? 3. Many say that you should start with the 0.5% in squaleme but you’re saying I should use the granactive one if I’m a beginner ( some say that one is more advanced ) 4. Are there any areas i should avoid when applying retinol? Thank you!
You can but we do recommend to start off slow 3x per week. It depends on your skin’s tolerance and you wouldn’t use a retinoid on the same day as exfoliating :)
yes if you have consistently being using another retinol prior :) just introduce 3 x a week for the first week to allow your skin to adjust to the formulation. Then you can increase frequency

Once you have gone through 2 bottles of the 5%, you can consider moving to the lower % of retinol. It will depend on your skin’s tolerance x
@@SkinZoneTV Hello! Can you explain the rationale behind going down to the weaker retinols after 2 bottles of 5% retinoids? Is it some sort of saturation thing, where retinoids are no longer needed to maintain the effects? Thank you for the excellent video
@@user-rh6zc2pk5d no it’s just the ordinary’s retinol serums are stronger than their retinoid serums.
