It's classic r/k selection theory. In a country with high mortality rates due to disease and conflict, and with no social welfare, why would you risk only having two children? If one dies of malaria and the other falls victim to political violence (remember most of these countries are military dictatorships) then who's going to support you in your old age? Your future is much more secure if you have more children, hence the average being around 5 in these countries. As the above commenter pointed out, this behaviour used to be the norm worldwide, before modern medicine, sanitation and peace levels ensured a high likelihood of child survival. Until relatively recently, couples in Europe and Asia would also have large numbers of children because they knew there was a high likelihood of them dying before maturity, so the only way to ensure your livelihood was to create more than you needed. The "problem" now is that the child mortality rates in Africa are declining (as economies are growing and modern medicine and education are becoming more accessible) however the cultural norm of breeding many children persists. However, past examples suggest that people eventually accustom to life with low child mortality rates and slowly decrease their number of children as it is easier and cheaper to raise one/two/three children than it is to raise four or more (look at the steady decline in birth-rates in western countries throughout the 1900s).

And for sure, you''re right, there are many African countries still making very little progress. Rwanda is just very fortunate that its military dictator (Kagame) actually has good intentions and some basic economic understanding. However if Rwanda can develop, there's no reason why other African nations can't follow suit. The problem is most of them don't use this wealth in a way that benefits the general population. Again, this is a result of the corrupt military leaders who are in charge of their country's economies; the descendants of those who took power by force during the post-colonial power vacuum that left practically the entire continent in anarachy. In a country like Canada, finding oil is great for Canadians. A private company will purchase the rights to suck it up and sell it overseas, not only employing local workers and paying them fair wages but also paying billions of dollars worth of tax to the Canadian government which gets funnelled back into the country in the form of roads, healthcare, public schools etc. This maintains a stable economic environment from which more businesses can arise and positively contribute to Canadian society. On the other hand, when a country like Nigeria finds oil that wealth never reaches the general public. Rights to the oil were sold off to overseas companies and the profits from such sales stayed within those in the Nigerian government, spent on foreign goods rather than invested back into country. Local profiteers that try to extract oil to sell in their own communities for cheaper prices get shut down, locked up and sometimes worse. It's clear the problem with most African countries is mismanagement at the top end. The resources are there, the potential human capital is there, and with China's one road policy the infrastructure will soon be there too for many of them. We just need to wait until all the Mugabes and Buharis die or get overthrown and more economically literate leaders step up in their place
Nigeria's population boom is mainly due to the Muslim majority North, the unfortunate part is that this is the poorest and most illiterate part of the country.
Most Nigerian leaders have come from that region, keeping the people impoverished and illiterate was done deliberately so that the people can be easily manipulated and used for violence, that is why the region has a long history of religious violence.

Africa's population boom is different to any population boom we've seen in the past. While most countries, when they reach industrialization quadruple or quintuple their population (Germany 20M->80M, UK 15M->60M, China 500M->1500M) Africa has already sextupled its population (200M in 1950 -> 1300M in 2018) which is projected to further rise to more than 4000M by the end of the century. This is a twentyfold increase and even by 2100, it is still projected to rise for a couple decades. At the same time, real economic development is only now starting to emerge in a very limited number of places. This is dangerous to Africa and the entire world. Africa isn't able to sustain itself with such a huge population, especially when climate change continues to decrease the area of arable land and makes droughts much more common. Food and especially water shortages will become a problem eventually, not to mention the massive loss of jobs, which will be the result of automation. This will cause migration and flight on a scale the world has never seen before, threatening Asia and especially Europe.

The ageing population is just a myth. Yes, there are countries that are ageing but most of the modern workforce is poorly managed. There are repetitive tasks that can easily be done by robots. Well it would take too long an answer but I’d say : You do not have to live in cities no problem with that but urbanisation is a fact, 2/3 of the world population already lives in cities, and this isn’t going to change soon at all. The fact that you dislike cities is important for cities whose goal is to make it a nice place to live. You mention the suburb but that is a very bad example since horizontal sprawl is quite an issue because they are residential places to live and people drive to work mostly. You mention American suburbs but the US has the biggest commuting time in the world, and the direct effects of that are diseases for people sitting that long, ecologically that many cars.. well you get the picture. Obviously not everyone should live in cities, but living in suburbs has nothing to do with overpopulation, as I said, the Earth is big enough for us all, shouldn’t be hard to find a spot with no one if that’s what you are looking for

I'm pretty sure that if all countries had similar wealth and most importantly low population density like America, Australia, Canada, or Scandinavia, then most people would live in suburbs. The fact is, the world is already overpopulated because the supply of land is already lower than demand. I'd say they maximum world population without there being any shortage of land in relation to demand is around 0.1-1 billion people.
+Philippe Avril The problem with fitting the world into America is not that we'd not fit, it is that it would turn an area the size of America into a heavily urbanised place like Beijing. And that is ignoring the amount of land we destroy to sustain our agriculture needs (currently at around 40% of the world's land mass - already too much), the economic growth as a result of the increasing amount of workers and the harmful emissions that increased industry creates and of course the increased waste. We are claiming too much of the planet for our own personal use, at the detriment of the rest of nature. We artificially keep ourselves fed by destroying nature and replacing it with rows of crops. At some point the entire planet is covered in agriculture and human homes, with the nature that's left being a glorified national park.

We have high number graduates in STEM programs and for the past 5 to 10 years, according to CIA report African countries have had the highest economy growth in the world. The world projection sees Africa countries being among the richest. 70% of our population would be educated dynamic youth workforce who have the skill sets to handle the job of tomorrow. This will drive and accelarate Nigeria and Africa economy. The western world leaders are not stupid. They know the importance of having a population made of educated youth workforce that is higher than that of old ederly folks. They know it would be great burden for their economy. This is why the governments in Japan, europe and western worlds are paying couples to marry and have kids. This is also why they have immigration programs to attracts those youthful workfroce from other nations. A lot of people just speak out of ignorance and hatred. African governments are preparing and taking measures to build infrastructure and create more jobs for her people. Africa is on the RISE. The Earth is huge. There is still plenty of space for billions more. Just look at China, Russia and Australia, so much empty land that could be used for humans through creative planning and advanced technologies. Also, we tend to forget that countries like India and China can fit several European countries in each of them so saying India or China as individual countries have the largest populations is quite deceptive. With the precipitous decline in conflicts, the Continental Free Trade Area, the demographic dividend, the fastest growing economies, ever expanding access to the internet/energy/education/healthcare, new major oil/gas discoveries, and the overwhelming spread of Democratic elections/governments Africa's future is bright. Africa's youth are just starting to take the reigns of power from the old guard. Look at what Abiy Ahmed is doing in Ethiopia and what Paul Kagame has done in Rwanda. I suspect that sometime in the next 10 years we are really going to see something like a continental economic takeoff in Africa in light of these factors. Especially in Ethiopia/Eritrea, Tanzania, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, DRC, Ghana, Angola, Namibia, South Africa/SADC region, Uganda, Kenya, and Mozambique. Tanzania, Ethiopia, Nigeria and DRC being the most interesting to watch with the highest near term upside. I'm very concerned about the declining population and slow down in productivity in Europe and what that will mean for the regional stability there. Also China's growing power and a potential subsequent spread of equally authoritarian debt ridden quasi client states in Asia and eventually Africa.

It's classic r/k selection theory. In a country with high mortality rates due to disease and conflict, and with no social welfare, why would you risk only having two children? If one dies of malaria and the other falls victim to political violence (remember most of these countries are military dictatorships) then who's going to support you in your old age? Your future is much more secure if you have more children, hence the average being around 5 in these countries.
As the above commenter pointed out, this behaviour used to be the norm worldwide, before modern medicine, sanitation and peace levels ensured a high likelihood of child survival. Until relatively recently, couples in Europe and Asia would also have large numbers of children because they knew there was a high likelihood of them dying before maturity, so the only way to ensure your livelihood was to create more than you needed.
The "problem" now is that the child mortality rates in Africa are declining (as economies are growing and modern medicine and education are becoming more accessible) however the cultural norm of breeding many children persists. However, past examples suggest that people eventually accustom to life with low child mortality rates and slowly decrease their number of children as it is easier and cheaper to raise one/two/three children than it is to raise four or more (look at the steady decline in birth-rates in western countries throughout the 1900s).

I know what you're thinking; this is just one example. And for sure, you''re right, there are many African countries still making very little progress. Rwanda is just very fortunate that its military dictator (Kagame) actually has good intentions and some basic economic understanding. The problem is most of them don't use this wealth in a way that benefits the general population. Again, this is a result of the corrupt military leaders who are in charge of their country's economies; the descendants of those who took power by force during the post-colonial power vacuum that left practically the entire continent in anarachy.
In a country like Canada, finding oil is great for Canadians. A private company will purchase the rights to suck it up and sell it overseas, not only employing local workers and paying them fair wages but also paying billions of dollars worth of tax to the Canadian government which gets funnelled back into the country in the form of roads, healthcare, public schools etc. This maintains a stable economic environment from which more businesses can arise and positively contribute to Canadian society.
On the other hand, when a country like Nigeria finds oil that wealth never reaches the general public. Rights to the oil were sold off to overseas companies and the profits from such sales stayed within those in the Nigerian government, spent on foreign goods rather than invested back into country. Local profiteers that try to extract oil to sell in their own communities for cheaper prices get shut down, locked up and sometimes worse.
It's clear the problem with most African countries is mismanagement at the top end. The resources are there, the potential human capital is there, and with China's one road policy the infrastructure will soon be there too for many of them. We just need to wait until all the Mugabes and Buharis die or get overthrown and more economically literate leaders step up in their place

Africa's population boom is different to any population boom we've seen in the past. While most countries, when they reach industrialization quadruple or quintuple their population (Germany 20M->80M, UK 15M->60M, China 500M->1500M) Africa has already sextupled its population (200M in 1950 -> 1300M in 2018) which is projected to further rise to more than 4000M by the end of the century. This is a twentyfold increase and even by 2100, it is still projected to rise for a couple decades. At the same time, real economic development is only now starting to emerge in a very limited number of places. This is dangerous to Africa and the entire world. Africa isn't able to sustain itself with such a huge population, especially when climate change continues to decrease the area of arable land and makes droughts much more common. Food and especially water shortages will become a problem eventually, not to mention the massive loss of jobs, which will be the result of automation. This will cause migration and flight on a scale the world has never seen before, threatening Asia and especially Europe.

The ageing population is just a myth. Yes, there are countries that are ageing but most of the modern workforce is poorly managed. There are repetitive tasks that can easily be done by robots. If we keep making the argument that we need population growth for the economy then it will be a never-ending cycle. It's simply not sustainable. I guess time will tell.

You do not have to live in cities no problem with that but urbanisation is a fact, 2/3 of the world population already lives in cities, and this isn’t going to change soon at all.
The fact that you dislike cities is important for cities whose goal is to make it a nice place to live.
You mention the suburb but that is a very bad example since horizontal sprawl is quite an issue because they are residential places to live and people drive to work mostly.
You mention American suburbs but the US has the biggest commuting time in the world, and the direct effects of that are diseases for people sitting that long, ecologically that many cars.. well you get the picture.
Obviously not everyone should live in cities, but living in suburbs has nothing to do with overpopulation, as I said, the Earth is big enough for us all, shouldn’t be hard to find a spot with no one if that’s what you are looking for

I'm pretty sure that if all countries had similar wealth and most importantly low population density like America, Australia, Canada, or Scandinavia, then most people would live in suburbs.
The fact is, the world is already overpopulated because the supply of land is already lower than demand. I'd say they maximum world population without there being any shortage of land in relation to demand is around 0.1-1 billion people.

And that is ignoring the amount of land we destroy to sustain our agriculture needs (currently at around 40% of the world's land mass - already too much), the economic growth as a result of the increasing amount of workers and the harmful emissions that increased industry creates and of course the increased waste. We are claiming too much of the planet for our own personal use, at the detriment of the rest of nature. We artificially keep ourselves fed by destroying nature and replacing it with rows of crops. At some point the entire planet is covered in agriculture and human homes, with the nature that's left being a glorified national park.
People keep saying that Africa will just be overpopulated and starve. Eventually, those people will take back all of the resources that was taken. If they can just get rid of that religion, they can focus more on science and technology.
You do know that Africa is diverse... There are not just black Africans... There are Africans with European and Asian heritage...

We have high number graduates in STEM programs and for the past 5 to 10 years, according to CIA report African countries have had the highest economy growth in the world. The world projection sees Africa countries being among the richest. 70% of our population would be educated dynamic youth workforce who have the skill sets to handle the job of tomorrow. This will drive and accelarate Nigeria and Africa economy. The western world leaders are not stupid. They know the importance of having a population made of educated youth workforce that is higher than that of old ederly folks. They know it would be great burden for their economy. This is why the governments in Japan, europe and western worlds are paying couples to marry and have kids. This is also why they have immigration programs to attracts those youthful workfroce from other nations. A lot of people just speak out of ignorance and hatred. You all need to educate yourself a bit. You do not need to go far or travel to Africa. African governments are preparing and taking measures to build infrastructure and create more jobs for her people. Africa is on the RISE. Go and research into " the nest billion dollar population and economy". Go find out where tech companies are spending money in Nigeria and Africa to give free wifi. Those companies are not stupid. They know where the shift and trending is going. They want to be prepared and better equipped to enjoy the benefits of that next billion dollar population and economy. It is only a someone who is biased and someone that doesn't speak the truth that will pretend like they do not know what is coming. Yes Africa needs more to be done, but our leaders are doing that now. Also, countries like China and others are investing heavily in Africa now because they know the potential and benefits. You think China is stupid? well if you think so, remember they economy overtook that of Germany and Japan and theu are now closing up with USA. Africa is a driver and will help China to become the number 1 economy in this world. Africa is a greener pasture and whatever good investment you made in Africa, you reap the reward is 1000 folds. Western countries are choked up. The real estate goes up and down, the same way their economy experience sinosoidal pattern. On the other hand, Africa has a steady positive slope (upward progression) because we are rising and more places to be developed, which will be developed and before all that is done, think about the massive job and employments that would create. Plus the natural resources are abundant. We have resources beyong cruel. I mean name it. Name any natural resources that is needed by the world we live in and which western world are so much dependent on, we have all. We are changing everything and we have started harnessing our resources and using them for Africa. The importance of these growing population and the benefits abound. It will be an issue if our government refused to invest and develop our nations. But they are working which is a great sign

The Earth is huge. There is still plenty of space for billions more. Just look at China, Russia and Australia, so much empty land that could be used for humans through creative planning and advanced technologies. Also, we tend to forget that countries like India and China can fit several European countries in each of them so saying India or China as individual countries have the largest populations is quite deceptive. The deserts can also be converted in to greenery and habitable land through advancements in technology. That in itself can create so many countries to house millions and billions of more humans.

Huge opportunity for Africa this century. With the precipitous decline in conflicts, the Continental Free Trade Area, the demographic dividend, the fastest growing economies, ever expanding access to the internet/energy/education/healthcare, new major oil/gas discoveries, and the overwhelming spread of Democratic elections/governments Africa's future is bright. Africa's youth are just starting to take the reigns of power from the old guard. Look at what Abiy Ahmed is doing in Ethiopia and what Paul Kagame has done in Rwanda.
I suspect that sometime in the next 10 years we are really going to see something like a continental economic takeoff in Africa in light of these factors. Especially in Ethiopia/Eritrea, Tanzania, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, DRC, Ghana, Angola, Namibia, South Africa/SADC region, Uganda, Kenya, and Mozambique.
Tanzania, Ethiopia, Nigeria and DRC being the most interesting to watch with the highest near term upside.
I'm very concerned about the declining population and slow down in productivity in Europe and what that will mean for the regional stability there.
Also China's growing power and a potential subsequent spread of equally authoritarian debt ridden quasi client states in Asia and eventually Africa.
