ooh, yes, that's So true. My best friend (much better than me) never finishes anything, and she's reaalllly annoyed whenever a slight detail isn't perfect. Then she's re-do the drawing/painting and she never finishes. Almost never. I see my mistakes and if I can't fix them, I ignore them. XD
I pants my first 2 to 3 chapters until I have an idea of where I want the story to go and then I do a loose outline to write the bones of my story and where I want to go. Then I pants my way from there. The outline helps me maintain where the story HAS to go while pantsing allows me wiggle room as to HOW I get to the places the story has to go.
I really like this and might try! I have tried outlining in so many ways and every time I do I hate it and no longer feel interested. For some reason I just cannot stay interested in the story unless I only have an idea. Once I know it all...I don't care 😂
You have no idea how happy I've been since hearing from your mailing list that you're releasing a writing craft book!! I'm so excited to get my hands on it and read it 😍
Well, I’ve published seven full-length novels and one full-length non-fiction book, and I have two in-progress novels both at about 75% completion. My writing advice would be to read hundreds of books (if not thousands) and also develop a split personality so you have a small chance of being critical enough of your own writing not to inflict objectively awful writing on the world.
whoa, how do you write so much? the thought of writing just one book, while something i want to do so badly i dream about it, fills me with dread (I'm mostly just scared of being a loss for words 2000 words in lol)
Lmao, well my other self almost deleted more than 50 drafts of the first chapter of my book. Idk why it's just now that she's liking my renewed drafts.

Omg you are amazing I am 16 and just started writing my first actual novel. It's a YA romance and not really a very original story but I want to make it as good as I can because it's my first book and it is very special to me 😊
I started writing my novel as a short story, thinking it would be easier and quicker to publish a series of short stories set in the same universe. Then I found out there was too much to say and the characters needed more development, plot had to unfold at its own pace and could not be resolved quickly. In the end I saw that instead of writing a long short story, I had to write a novel.
That's exactly why I haven't begun writing my Novella. It began as an idea for a short story 7 months ago and now, it's a half complete story in my head.
I know some say going to school for creative writing is a waste of time and money, but watching your videos have shown me that it was a good investment. Most of the things I was thought, you repeat. I do learn things watching your videos, but most of what you’ve said was covered in my schooling. But at the same time they gave us resources continue our education. Now the main thing I have to do is Shut Up and Write the Book.
Wow, this video is incredibly insightful for anyone looking to write a book from start to finish! Your tips on outlining, drafting, and revising are so practical and motivating. I can't wait to apply these techniques to my own writing. Also, congratulations on your new book release! Looking forward to reading it and seeing how you apply your own advice. For self editing, I go through and add comments to my Google docs then do a full rewrite of the draft going off of my comments. I do this in hopes of me not getting attached to certain passages or sentences.
You are so amazing and fantastic! I started writing when I was 11 years old and fallen out of touch of writing as some didn't believe in me... Not gonna lie I honestly thought this was gonna be an announcement about the Savior’s Army but I’m glad that Shut Up and Write the Book is on the way as well
When this book is out I'm DEFINITELY getting "Shut Up and Write the Book"! Your writing advice tips have been very helpful to me and thanks to your channel I've actually started writing again after years of just throwing concepts into Word documents I'll never touch again; and this time I'm writing in the right way and I'm actually making progress on actual stories instead of on train-wrecks heading straight to the dumpster-fire. Seriously, I recently found a story I started writing in middle school; 80 pages of crossover fanfiction. this was back in the time when I didn't know the terms "story outline" and "character profile" existed, among others, so you can guess what a cringe read that was... On the other hand, I'm actually happy I've found it because it showed me how much I've progressed and improved since then. There are still many things I need to learn and practice when it comes to writing, but your videos made it a lot easier and organized for me and all around better in an interesting, immersive way that is fun to listen to and learn from. Thank you.
Thank you so much for all your knowledge Jenna. All your tips have always been so incredibly helpful to me. Congrats on all your published books, and cheers to the many more to come! You deserve to be a successful best-selling author. God bless you, love you!❤
Any tips on how to fill out a scene to make it longer without boring readers? whenever i write it seems like so much and then it ends up being like 1 page when i wanted to to be multiple.
This will be really good!!! I am reading a friend's book, and I shared this video and also, a video from the life of a writer. There is very useful information from both of these fantastic authors.
For titles, I find it easier to make a sequel than the first book, since by book number two, you will likely have a set style of titles. For example, The Savior's Champion (original book) and The Savior's Sister (sequel). Or 50 Shades of Gray and 50 Shades Deeper (or was it Darker? Or Grayer?). Bonus points if you have a title you can use as the general book series name, like every Harry Potter book being "Harry Potter and [insert plot-related thing here].
I know that people are different, but I still have a hard time imagining how it'd be to want to write but have nothing to write about. lol. I have always, my entire life, been making up stories and scenes in my head. I didn't start writing them down properly for a long time, but now that I do... man, I have no shortage of ideas. XD
You encouraged me to write a book and I’m still writing it, it’s called Unraveled Secrets, it’s about this 7th grader who has a diary and she writes down a map in there because she knows her older sister is gonna find it and her plan was to make the map go into another dimension that is a nightmare and she thinks it’s only gonna put her sister in there for a day but it ends up being forever and then I’m prob gonna write the rest in another book lol
Hi Jenna, I’m not sure if I have asked this or someone else has; but when I use an online editor to check my work it always says my dialogue is wrong and needs to be corrected for it to be correct. My question is and any help would be greatly appreciated. Is there a place I can send my work to be checked by a human, or is the a place I could meet people to become a critique reader, as I don’t actually have a writing circle, prior to the pro edit phase. Ty very much, love the channel, love your content, and please keep being a great source of inspiration. 👍🏻🇦🇺
How do stay focused and not shift to something else? For example I have an outline and 30% first draft, yet I’m already more interested in another idea I have 😅
Diane Callahan's youtube channel already gifts most of this already, not to mention "On Writing" and "How to write a damn good novel". Or Elizabeth George's writing books. So I'm curious to see what your books could add.
Additionally Heart Breathings entire writing boot camp and videos that actually explain crafting and other tactics. This channel has generally be “top 10” this or that and not actual helpful writing advice. I would hope an author would have published more than 3 novels before giving other authors advice 🤷🏼♀️ Me having published 2 novels find it odd that someone gave advice about writing before they’d even published their first novel. While entertaining to non or aspiring writers, I unsubbed a while back bc it wasn’t helpful to learn how to craft writing once I’d gone through the process. Only one could definitely replicate Jenna’s marketing tactics as that is the thing she’s good at. So if it’s a book marketing book sure. If it’s craft… I think Jenna should read back the Savior’s Champion and count how many times she used the words “line of sight” in the entire novel. It was A LOT. And most of the time unnecessary to use that phrase at all.
Saw "huge announcement" an thought for sec she was gonna say she'd married and/or was having a baby or something there for a second. Was wondering myself bout the steps of writing since I dabble on an off with this which can also be adapted for my coming tube channel too

Honestly I am into my first book and I have a small question, before writing i of course have plans for my story , but then suddenly I realized I have a freaking hole in it , I only filled it after cursing myself for an hour , but I am sure I will get this problem again (I hope not but hey !) So does anyone have any advice for filling a hole in a book ? Or just how to avoid even having one
When your book is so complex, that you've been outlining for 2 months and have 50 full pages if 10 pt font of an outline. Of course I am also writing science fiction.
I matched with someone online. He told me he's been working on his memoir (he's 37) for 12 years. I realized we had fundamental differences and had to delete him.
I'm in the editing phase and my God, so much has changed since the first rough draft 🥴 I'm a severe underwriter and find it difficult to show emotion so it's been difficult.
But Jenna! will you come to my house to stand behind my chair and slap me everytime i procrastinate until i finish my book? What is the best way to return to writing after a year struggling with a block?
Little feedback: I am a first-timer on the channel and the 2:39 mins of introduction kind of frustrated me a little. Maybe try spreading the info a little more evenly, I don't think it makes sense to tell me to subscribe while I haven't even seen content yet. Apart from that, I enjoyed watching tho! Keep up the good work 💕
My mood in/about each step. LET'S GOOOOOO! Idea Phase: Preeeeeeeeeeeeeeeetty, but I usually have to be either in bed or in the shower for this one to work. I can't remember where I was when I thought of my current series idea, though. Does anyone else here find they do their best thinking in one of those spots? Planning: More of a nervous giggle on this one. I'm kind of transitioning from pantser to planner, truth be told. But I still wait for the lightning to strike, because I'm an idiot. Outlining: Uhh...haha...scream of terror. THIS is the scream of terror step. You're going to kick my ass for this, but other than the GENERAL idea of my book's trajectory, I plan one chapter in advance. Yeah...also, what's the snowflake method? First Draft: WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! This is NOT going to end well, and I don't give a shit! Self Edit: More of a weary sigh for this one. I'm WORKING on it. I'm not even done the full book yet, but I'm already revising the front half to make it stack up to what I need to do for the second half. Genre and Category: Romance...ish, new adult. Title: "On Eagle's Wings". Outside Help: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! But then again, I do have a Lisa. My bestie, and we pass our work back and forth. Professional Edit :Sigh...I just want to sit in a dark corner with this one. But I'm not THERE yet, thankfully. 10. Perfect, no. Pretty, yes. I LOVES IT, PRECIOUS! She says in the Gollum voice.
To each our own when it's about the processing of doing an outline or just going all out with no clear guide. To me, outline kills the story and kills the writer inside me. No room for creativity sense and feels too confined (it feels like I'm in a CT scan and those are dreadful). Just going with the flow just seems to cause me to actually engage with the story, the characters as people (not real people yeah, but the idea of an illusion that they can seem real to writers and even readers. It sort of like a magic trick if you kind of think about it), and more importantly, experiencing story emotions that is unfolding me. I don't know, the way I see it, we as writers are all wired differently when it comes to writing any story we'll want to tell and no process is ever wrong or a mistake, nope. Outlines can work for writers and Pantsing can work for writers as well. It should really be about how we as writers should think what is best for ourselves when it comes to writing. 8. Sensitivity Readers: Just because a group/marginalized group or a culture being together doesn't always mean so and so are going to have the same views or even similar experiences (more than likely different for each person). Sensitive topics is more broad than most of us think there is and might be unintentional rather than intentional when it comes to writing any sensitive topics. What if a writer has tried to do everything as possible to be as respectable, but might still be deemed as offensive though for other readers though? What then? It all sounds like a lose lose either way for a writer to be stress.
I wrote a fantasy story about Jesus, being trapped in the wilderness and then he was found and returned by a previously unknown female sibling. I was going to call it, "The Savior's Sister" but I found out that name was already taken. :)
No work is truly finished. It is just abandoned. This is what a writer said many years ago. I can't remember who. What is meant by this is that if you keep trying to perfect the work you will never be finished. This doesn't mean you don't follow these steps. It means there is such a thing as overworking the story. Then you lose the just right stage and go straight to crap. I am speaking from experience.
Good information for me, a noob. Your background music loop is super distracting, annoyingly repetitious and much too loud. It's like trying to hear someone, while standing in a mall just in front of some 'hip' store.
I was gonna watch this, but then I was told to shut up and write the book. So I'll do that first and watch this later.

Ooh how exciting, maybe if I get the up coming book my brain will actually absorb writing info lol
So is this new book gonna be the book version of "Make Your Own Damn Movie" by Lloyd Kaufman? I'm game!
Keep up the good work 💕
me rewinding the first 5 minutes 3000 times because i kept spacing out
My mood in/about each step.
💕
👋🏻
The only thing stopping me from finishing my stories would be all the permanent brain damage.
First?
Nope
''Shut up and right the book'' huh....well good luck, hope you manage it.
Good information for me, a noob.
Your background music loop is super distracting, annoyingly repetitious and much too loud. It's like trying to hear someone, while standing in a mall just in front of some 'hip' store.
I’m so close to Step 8!!! 😁😁
