It’s a cheeky thing not just the Irish my Dad would embellish stories for his own amusement it’s not really a lie if it’s innocent if you see the twinkle in the persons eye and you both know what’s going on it’s just in fun. I don't think he ever wrote anything down. He'd do 7 nights in London and not one was the same. The show where Whoopi Goldberg introduces him to an american audience in New York is brilliant, with comedy legends in the audience.
He has never had a script, he did try a couple when he started out, however he could never remember the lines and it slowed him down to a point he was no longer funny so he gave up the writing stuff and goes on cold

Billy Connolly famously never writes anything down. It's all up there.
It may surprise you that Billy does not know what he will say until 5 minutes before the show. You should see some of his interviews over the years.
One of the great story-tellers. Norm Macdonald another. They have you hanging on their every word.
The difference being that Billy is more interesting and actually funny.
