      Fact check your self Martin J....A 20lb propane tank does not hold "20lbs" it holds 4.7 lbs of liquid propane.. Propane in my state costs $1.92 a pound, national average cost is $2.53 [as of January 2025]. The price for propane in Idaho is $2.44 as of January 2025.

      My last propane purchase (10/5/24) at Tractor Supply in central PA was $14.37 at $3.09/gal for 4.65 gallons which rounds out to 19.716# @ .729/# - taken right off the receipt. They wouldn't fill the other 5 because she said that they were too old. I replied that I could relate.

      @@michaelparkin8216 Do you mean 4.7 gallons, not pounds? A gallon of propane weighs 4.2 pounds, so 4.2lbs x 4.7 = 19.74 pounds, hence, 20 lbs tank. Propane is sold by the gallon, not the pound, so at $2.44/gl divided by 4.2 pounds is... wait for it... just over 58 cents per pound.

    I got away with refilling the NON-refillable bottles for 2 years. Then I saw a few videos about how the inside rusts more and more with time, and you won't know how badly rusted it is until it explodes. Well, I stopped doing that, and I'll be spending the extra money on a few of the refillable bottles. I'm glad you're doing the same. Stay safe!

    I've refilled Coleman 1lb tanks for over a decade. After an incident of 1 can leaking on my wife while I wasn't home recently, I disposed of them and got the Fuel Kegs. We had just dropped our kids off at their schools and I went into work. Then my wife brought in a tank from where we store them(A cooler on the porch). Fortunately she got a headache, shut off the heater and put it outside. It didn't set off our co2, or flammable gas detector. So it must have been a small leak. No obvious signs of the OPD valve leaking at first. After getting home, I sprayed soapy water on each tank of the 11 tanks I had ready to go. Almost all of them had small bubbles coming out of the OPD schrader looking hole every few seconds. I typically would retire my older tanks after a couple years of service and pick up new ones in 4-packs. I can say, these cheap cans aren't designed for refilling. After using the Fuel Keg I see what safety I was disregarding in refilling them.

  • @russellwatters5891
    @russellwatters5891 14 дней назад +10

    Its not just the savings, it is safety. The Fuel Keg has a thicker cylinder wall made for refilling. The valve lets you know when its full, unlike having to guess or weigh the others while filling. I bought mine from Wal-Mart, its a great device to have for hunting or camping. Love what ya'll are doing 😊

    Martin . I have filled the green 1lb bottles a few times. 20 bottles at a time. The last time I filled a few bottles I noticed vapor rising from the pressure release fitting. The O-ring seal was frozen from venting a little liquid lp gas. It would not seal. From that experience I invested in flame king and keg refillable bottles. The Keg is the best because no tools are required. $18 bucks each is a high price to pay but avoiding injury makes it all worth while. Ask for one every Christmas and Birthday 😉

    I bought 2 fuel keg canisters, the refill system, 3 Buddy heaters, I've got 120 Lbs. Of propane, a Coleman 2 burner camp stove , food, water, fire wood, additional forms of heating devices, lighting devices, lots of batteries, solar charging systems, fuel , medical goods, winter clothing, and I'm still adding things, items for self defense as well! I learned a valuable lesson in 2021 ! I was not prepared one bit for the winter blackout in Tx. Thought I was literally going to die! And stuck in the country, couldn't get out! NEVER, EVER AGAIN!!!

      The level of unpreparedness by many people is shocking. When you see others go through these hard times unprepared on the news, a little bell should go off... "hey, I can learn from this". Many don't ever learn. Glad you are ready this time.
      I have an elderly friend in OH who lives in a retirement community in an apartment. I've been trying to get her to figure out in advance what she would do if they have a hard freeze that takes the power out. Her complex has zero preparations for emergency heat, so all these old folks would be sol. She has checked with social services, and they have nothing. I am very concerned for her.
      She gets a food box delivered periodically and it contains items she would not buy. I told her to keep them anyway in case of emergency. When you're hungry, you'll eat anything. So she has some extra food, but I know it's not enough for an extended power outage, and she'd still have no way to heat it or boil water for tea. At least she did get an extra bag of rice and beans for when she does have power.
      Now, I'm making her promise to get a $4 emergency blanket at minimum next time she shops at Walmart. I had one that saved my life once when hypothermia started to set in while I was snow camping. I told her she needs to get her friend to take her thrift shopping for a used wool blanket. Those two things alone could potentially keep her warm enough.
      It's hard to get people on a limited income to get a few extra items to save their lives, especially when they keep hearing lately necessary services will be soon taken away if certain greedy billionaires get their way.

You can do a search, like you did for refilling the 1 pound propane bottles, for any of the other safety issues you poo-pooed and find numerous stories of people losing the eyes, fingers, limbs or lives because they thought Safety Sally was a nag and they, being manly-men, knew better.

    Has this issue (discovered by another user) been resolved?
    Fuelkegs have a flaw during the welding part. Sometimes the welders leave the beads inside the tank without cleaning them out. And they get stuck in the valve if you turn the tank upside down. I ordered 4 FuelKegs and only one of them didnt have the beads. You can shake them around to hear it. So i ordered 15 more of them to Home Depot so i can pick out 3 good ones. 10 of them were full of beads. One had only a small amount of beads, and 4 were perfect. I kept those 4. So now i have 5 perfect FuelKegs out of 19 ordered.

    Well I bought the 20lb. Adapter and filter for mine for Mr buddy heater at the same time 15 year's ago. Don't see the point of not just using the 20# tanks not to start with.

  • @jerryford8385
    @jerryford8385 14 дней назад

    You have to check the date stamped on the 20# tanks to make sure they are refillable. So getting someone’s old bbq might not work out for you.

      Recertification of those old tanks costs $5 at N Idaho propane.

    • @MartinJohnsonOffGridLiving
      @MartinJohnsonOffGridLiving  14 дней назад +1

      Good point. You should be able to take the old tank to the Walmart Blue Rino Exchange first. It will cost a little more than Just refilling it but then you will have a newer tank to refill later.

    • @illuminatedpatriot9347
      @illuminatedpatriot9347 14 дней назад

      @MartinJohnsonOffGridLiving This is true, but check the dates on the tanks at the exchange as well. A few times, I've bought tanks from the exchange only to see they expire in a few months or a year. 😉

    • @michiganengineer8621
      @michiganengineer8621 14 дней назад +1

      Yes, Mr. Heater has a hose to feed their heaters from a 20lb or larger tank. It isn't as portable as the refillable tanks.

    • @MartinJohnsonOffGridLiving
      @MartinJohnsonOffGridLiving  14 дней назад

      Yes there is. I have one and will show it in a future video. The only problem with that solution it that it isn't as portable.

    One of the biggest problems is people don't turn the 20lb. bottle upside down cause that bottle they're refilling just to get fumes and over filling then boom you have to get the liquid into it. It is called a liquid gas after all

    Since Propane is so cheap where you are, You might consider converting a backup Generator for the house instead of hauling barrels of fuel.

    Martin, yes please wear gloves when refilling your propane tank. Escaping propane can cause frostbite or freeze burns to your skin. I work at Tractor Supply and must wear gloves every time I refill propane tanks for our customers.

    I know safety gets in the way of getting the job done, BUT, how long will it take to finish the job after a major injury and possibly missing parts. I worked in the oilfield for 40 years. I started off working “ inland “ fields were the was no such thing as safety. I saw people serious injured and even killed. When I went offshore, the first thing I had to learn was what I couldn’t do any more. The safety department was strict. You could be fired for simply “ breaking the plain” of putting your hand in a “ confined space” .
    As I sit here after almost a life time of working out there, I believe in safety ALWAYS. I WAS NEVER INJURED! I think that was because I followed the rules. The rules are to minimize the risk as far as is possible.

    • @MartinJohnsonOffGridLiving
      @MartinJohnsonOffGridLiving  14 дней назад

      Yes, When you are working with others or when have others working for you safety is more important. You never know when someone is not going to be paying attention. If he hurts himself or others that is a tragedy plus there is a lawsuit on the way. Government agencies and insurance companies regulate that kind of stuff. However, responsible people working at home should be able to determine their own risk tolerance and act accordingly.
