I'm so glad I found this video!!! I JUST completed my PhD, and I'm trying to sort through my feelings and put the pieces of my life back together while also pursuing the next steps. It's A LOT but I now have a lot more free time so definitely feel disoriented or "disregulated" without my normal routine lol. It's nice to know that it's not out of the norm.
Yes! it is also validating to me to read your comment because I REALLY resonate with you! I wish more people talked about this feeling but I am glad we can share this space in this community together! Thank you for commenting!
I have no desire to publish or really even teach. I'm not a people person; I just love my subject and I want to know how to do my job well and understand what I'm doing.
THANK YOU for sharing you perspective i know @fdotor79 and you are really help a lot of people who are quietly watching and feel the same way! So thank you both for sharing your experiences and desires!!! It is soooooo important!!!
As someone who has been trying to become a planner in the past year or so, I would love to see a detailed version of that life plan! Thanks for this video!
Wow I think you answered some of the questions I left in your previous video!!! I am working on possibly publishing while in school as I set the goal of having 3 before graduating with my PhD. More and more I am looking to be more of a professor at a teaching Institution and not so much at a R1 Institution. Love teaching, but as I develop my skills as a researcher not sure if I'm always going to publish all the time. Like you I also would love to turn my dissertation into a book (Currently have two topics in the running to be my dissertation). Great video!!!
YOU ASKED SUCH GREAT QUESTIONS! So thank you! I loved hearing more about you and 3 publications sounds like an amazing goal!!! Thank you for sharing! I genuinely appreciate you!
Yes! of course! thank you for letting me know! I genuinely thought no one would care, but people are caring! AND THAT IS SOOO EXCITING FOR ME! lol thank you for takin the time to comment!
Hi, Brisa. I thought you were supposed to get a job offer (tenure-track position) at the department you are in right now. Is there a possibility for this? Could comment and explain a little bit more about the Chancellor's Postdoctoral Fellowship Program? I thought the goal of the program was to hire the selected postdocs.
Hi Fernando, that is such a good question and EVENTUALLY when I get the time, I do plan on making a few videos about the UC president's/chancellors post doc but in general here are a few things. The goal is to get you a job at a UC though it is almost never guaranteed ESPECIALLY at your host department. THOUGH it is very common. Many schools (because of the hiring incentive) can even make an entire position for their post doc so they can stay... though common, it is not the norm. It is possible of course to be recruited in a more traditional sense across all the UCs because the UC postdoc has a specialized list that is distributed to all the university with all the info on their post docs. But its not guaranteed and it is possible to not get a job, though the hiring rate is like 73% or something so not bad odds. Chancellor's is basically the same postdoc as the presidents its just the funding source is different. So president fellows' funding comes from the UC regents and the chancellors come for the individual university. but we all benefit from the same initiatives and perks. I hope that is helpful!
I WOULD LOVE TO!!! hhahaha sometimes i just think its a little too nerdy and no one would care! But even if its just me and you watching it!!!! The video is def gonna happen!
Congrats on graduating with a PhD I was offered a fully furnished masters (you know how they love to throw money at you to sweeten the deal) in a humanities field but opted for Law school instead. I just didn't see the economic value in a masters degree, especially considering that any sort of 6 figure salary work would also have required a 4-6 year PhD, and rely on a massive amount of luck to land a tenured university position. The prospect of 4-6 additional years of poverty and gruelling readings made me suicidal. But, kuddos to your perseverance, if people didn't do PhDs we wouldn't have professors.
Oh thats amazing! When I was little I really wanted to be lawyer then someone showed me all the books they had to read and that made me second guess myself.... but I guess it didn't matter cuz phds also have to read a lot lol so I was meant to struggle regardlsss hahaha I am so happy to hear that you found a path that was good, healthy, and sustainable for you! Sooo many people don't always have that foresight! So thank you for sharing your perspective! Plus with a JD you could still be a professor if you wanted lol so it really is an ultimate hack hahhaha!

Same, I have no desire to publish. I hope to serve in my field in the intergovernmental, nonprofit, or public sector. Good to know we're not alone. 😅
