Great video. I’m a purist in the lines of classic Holdsworth lineup of Holdsworth, Wackerman, and Johnson. Still I would have killed to be here and I still mourn the loss of Allan.

This video shows exactly why I liked so much Allan Holdsworth with Chad Wackerman instead Virgil Donati... While Fred with Wackerman sounds as an exquisite and fine dish, with Donati is like an all you cant eat barbecue. You don´t need to hit every drum every second to be considered a great drummer.

@@zootallures6470 he created the original drum part for this master piece, so its difficult not to say that is the best version, but to me, with Wackerman gets the perfect mood, if you know what I mean.

definiteky Virgil Donati the best drummer living! thanks for wonderful post , incredible line up ! pity only that so wonderful musicians didn't take from public response what they really deserved. How many spectators watching that live performance? maybe 200? 300? or 500? they deserved 5000 or 1000 or 15000 minimum.

While you will find no bigger fan of Virgil Donati, I have to admit that his style can be too much sometime. It's as if he's always pushing the extremes of physical and technical explosiveness, athletically leaping and driving as hard as possible at the cost of missing melodicism, texture and feel. Often it's what you don't play that pulls the listener in and shows that listening is going on in the band.

watch allan play in the tokyo live video. when did he stop gyrating and just start standing all stiff. it's refelected in his playing. body language is everything. a rigid body will yield rigid playing, THERE IS NO WAY AROUND IT, unless you want a rigid sound!

I mean, I think he started to have some health issues in the later years of his life. He physically looks different and of course he ultimately and unfortunately passed away of heart related issues if I recall. It's too bad, I miss him being around, never got the chance to see him live unfortunately.

Agreed. Wackerman is one of Holdsworth's better drummers, and this piece was best played by Tony Williams. But Donati plays it the same way he seems to play everything - too busy and too loud, as though he's the star turn in the band and has to try and impress all the time. He's technically brilliant but doesn't seem to 'get' the music at all. He seems more of a 'clinic drummer' to me - wowing a roomful of young wannabes while demonstrating his endorsement gear.

poor allan, struggling with this simple ass song he's played a million times. when i saw him in LA in 2010, he flubbed the solo, he was totally lost over those simple chord changes. i was sitting a mere 5 feet from him, at the end of his solo he turned to me and said 'sorry'. lol. granted, he was pissed that the drummer was late, during the song , the drummer was ON THE PHONE WITH HIS GIRLFRIEND, playing with ONE HAND. He was an HOUR late. Ronald Bruner. Afterwards, I met him and said "hey, thanks for showing up', wherein he promptly withdrew his hand from my proffered handshake. lol. asshole.

virgil is great, but he doesn't really work in these trio contexts. drummers like gary novak, especially, and gary husband are better for trio formats, they fill up the sound more.virgil is PERFECT for prog and more tightly organized music. allan's songs are ambling, aimless tone poems, not even 'songs' in the normal sense.
