Allan was like that, I was going to a concert of his and the line was long so I asked my friend lets go and get something to eat at this indian restaurant right next to it, we walk in and there's Allan and his band..I said hi, and he invited us to have dinner
Great video. I’m a purist in the lines of classic Holdsworth lineup of Holdsworth, Wackerman, and Johnson. Still I would have killed to be here and I still mourn the loss of Allan.
This video shows exactly why I liked so much Allan Holdsworth with Chad Wackerman instead Virgil Donati... While Fred with Wackerman sounds as an exquisite and fine dish, with Donati is like an all you cant eat barbecue. You don´t need to hit every drum every second to be considered a great drummer.
@@zootallures6470 he created the original drum part for this master piece, so its difficult not to say that is the best version, but to me, with Wackerman gets the perfect mood, if you know what I mean.
definiteky Virgil Donati the best drummer living! thanks for wonderful post , incredible line up ! pity only that so wonderful musicians didn't take from public response what they really deserved. How many spectators watching that live performance? maybe 200? 300? or 500? they deserved 5000 or 1000 or 15000 minimum.
While you will find no bigger fan of Virgil Donati, I have to admit that his style can be too much sometime. It's as if he's always pushing the extremes of physical and technical explosiveness, athletically leaping and driving as hard as possible at the cost of missing melodicism, texture and feel. Often it's what you don't play that pulls the listener in and shows that listening is going on in the band.
watch allan play in the tokyo live video. when did he stop gyrating and just start standing all stiff. it's refelected in his playing. body language is everything. a rigid body will yield rigid playing, THERE IS NO WAY AROUND IT, unless you want a rigid sound!
I mean, I think he started to have some health issues in the later years of his life. He physically looks different and of course he ultimately and unfortunately passed away of heart related issues if I recall. It's too bad, I miss him being around, never got the chance to see him live unfortunately.
Agreed. Wackerman is one of Holdsworth's better drummers, and this piece was best played by Tony Williams. But Donati plays it the same way he seems to play everything - too busy and too loud, as though he's the star turn in the band and has to try and impress all the time. He's technically brilliant but doesn't seem to 'get' the music at all. He seems more of a 'clinic drummer' to me - wowing a roomful of young wannabes while demonstrating his endorsement gear.
poor allan, struggling with this simple ass song he's played a million times. when i saw him in LA in 2010, he flubbed the solo, he was totally lost over those simple chord changes. i was sitting a mere 5 feet from him, at the end of his solo he turned to me and said 'sorry'. lol. granted, he was pissed that the drummer was late, during the song , the drummer was ON THE PHONE WITH HIS GIRLFRIEND, playing with ONE HAND. He was an HOUR late. Ronald Bruner. Afterwards, I met him and said "hey, thanks for showing up', wherein he promptly withdrew his hand from my proffered handshake. lol. asshole.
virgil is great, but he doesn't really work in these trio contexts. drummers like gary novak, especially, and gary husband are better for trio formats, they fill up the sound more.virgil is PERFECT for prog and more tightly organized music. allan's songs are ambling, aimless tone poems, not even 'songs' in the normal sense.
I was there. I had a drink with Allan the day before and chatted with Haslip and Donati at lunch that day. Wow.
I had a photo with Allan. A Fantastic person and musician

@@FerF123 I totally agree on Wackerman vs Donati and I have seen him playing with Allan.
I haven't seen Donati live in any context.

Brings them to life
Wackerman Johnson
Favorite rhythm section for Allan 😊
One of my fav songs from Tony William's Lifetime!

This number is very uplifting.
Thank You for posting this! Allan Holdsworths music changed my life
Just lovely. Thanks for sharing this. Blessings.
thanks a million!
Thank you
Meu Xará tocava muito!
É verdade
Is the drummer playing a different gig?
It’s a shame Virgil and Allan didn’t make more music, this guy actually outplayed Allan …
outplayed... more like over played. Virgil is a good counter... and horrible painter of notes. No sensitivity all flair.
@@morbidmanmusic love to see you drum
I’m glad Mancuso and band showed em how to play this. 😂
pathetic emoji. too bad he couldn't write it. His stuff is still pretty immature. Good hands and copying aren't everything.

There are countless other players you can turn to for that less is more approach, don’t expect a Porsche to drive like a horse and buggy…
Virgil is who he is and that’s fine by Allan and fine by me!
He belongs in groups like he is now … that Italian prog rock group icefish

Donati is great, but I think Wakerman fits better with Alans playing!
Without a doubt. Virgil is a pounder. Allan was great with Novack and Wackerman IMO.
Or Gary Husband! 🙂
Gary fit in here just perfect with holdsworth.
Hear the original from the album Believe It from Tony Williams.
Virgil is very close to the groove of Tony Williams. The next one is Chad Wackerman.
I like Gary Novak. The stuff he did with Dave Carpenter and Allan was great!

Garry husband was more empathetic to Allan's playing.
You are right with Tony Williams!

Too much drumming. Chad was my fav when it came to seeing Allan live.
Virgil bashin those drums hed like to kill them. unmelodical and not understanding the feel. not nice.
