This is Nitika Thakur starting HP gk series in which we will cover hp geography, art and culture of Himachal Pradesh, administration of hp, ancient medivial and modern history of himachal Pradesh and district profile of Himachal Pradesh .
Himachal Pradesh has a good number of mountain passes which are center of attraction for various reasons . Passes are narrow passages and area of Paramount importance when mountains are barriers against travel and trade .
The utility of a pass depends upon it's elevation above lower land at either end, lenght of time in which it is free of snow , thus open to travel and the type of adventure such as mountaineering , trekking , rock climbing , skiing etc.
Passes locally known as Jots and La
Here are few names of passes in Himachal Pradesh :
Padri, Basodan ,Sach , darati , kugti, duggi , shipping , chini , barla jot , dhankal , baralacha , tempola , Lula I , guladi , khardungla , shipklila , kunjum , prangla , shipki , gumrang , nalagaon , manireng , rupin , buran , shatul , chansal , pinparbati , rohatng , indrasen , dulchi , pajanand , jaloro , animal etc.
Moorcraft was the first Englishman to reach the Rohtang pass in 1820 and called it Rita ka jot .
