Thank You!. I have been looking at The Family Way in my library for a while. The blurb kinda a sells it as a domestic drama with a gay twist. YouYou r review tells me there is much more to the story. You have totally sold me. Similarly with All God's Children Are Little Broken Things. You sold me withe the James Baldwin comparison. Guapa, I read a few years back. Thoroughly Enjoyed! For Pride 2023, I have read Orient by Christopher Bollen, a slow burn crime thriller set in small town Long Island. Currently reading The Education of Harriet Hatfield by May Sarton. A novel written in the 80's but still relevant today. Lavender House a novel that was shortlisted for 2023 Lambda Literary Awsrd.
Thank you. Regarding The Family War, “a domestic drama with a gay twist” is actually a fitting description. But yes, there’s so much more to it than that. It’s such an enjoyable novel. Easy to get through as well, imo.
Yes, hope you give God’s Children Are Little Broken Things a try. Powerful reading.
I’m really enjoying Guapa, but I’m still in the early stages of the book. I’m currently reading a lot of things.
I’ll have to look into the books you’re currently reading. I’m not familiar with any of them. Thanks for this.
Haha it's funny to realize I was going to leave the same comment as someone else - you sold me on God's Children with the James Baldwin comparison. I've been reading his books for the first time this year and absolutely love his writing - fic and nonfic.
Really interesting dissection about The Late Americans - everything you said about it makes me think I'll enjoy it and I haven't read Brandon Taylor before - though I tried Real Life and didn't get into it.
Curious about your thoughts on your CR because I tried Biography of X and couldn't get into it, though I would be willing to give it another shot. Guapa sounds good too!
Yes, James Baldwin is great. Such powerful stuff. I’ve read all of his novels, and a few of his short stories and essays. Yeah, for me, God’s Children Are Little Broken Things gave me Baldwin vibes in some of the stories. Don’t put too much weight in that haha, but he was able to showcase anguish and longing in way that just felt Baldwin-esque, especially in the story “What the Singers Say About Love.” Hope you enjoy when you get to it.
I’m so glad you’re doing more videos!
I was not a fan of Brandon Taylor’s Real Life but I enjoy his social media presence (or did, back when he was more active) and I adore him in all of his podcast interviews and whatnot. Your nuanced appraisal of his latest offering has intrigued me.
I too really enjoyed God’s Children and am eager to see what Arinze Ifeakandu does next.
I stopped watching when you started to talk about DiRaddo’s Family Way because I am just a few chapters in. I will come back and listen to your thoughts after I finish. A month or so ago I read his debut, The Geography of Pluto, and loved it!
Thank you, Shawn. Well, I hope my review was enough to get you to give Brandon Taylor another try. Although, his latest is a less cohesive piece.
So glad you loved God’s Children as well. One of my faves of the year.
DiRaddo is such a talent, imo. It was such a pleasure reading his latest. Hope you enjoy my review of it when you come back to this.
The Late Americans sounds like it's up my alley. I haven't read Brandon Taylor before tho
Well, I hope you enjoy it when you get to it. Personally, I’d recommend starting with his debut novel Real Life tho. But either way, hope you become a fan of his work.
