  • Hi cosplay and anime friends! Let's learn how to set up your first sewing machine... and embrace our mistakes along the way. I've been sewing for over a decade now, but that doesn't mean I'm good at it!
However, if I waited until I was an expert in something to make a video about it... there would be zero videos on my channel. We're here to learn and grow together, folks. Even if my knowledge is limited, hopefully it can at least get you started on your path to sewing and making your own cosplay!

Nice! Older machines with no internal computers are SO sturdy, and if cared for properly, will last forever!

I'm lucky to have inherited two older machines now! Pretty sure my grandmother's machine could sew through steel 🤣

You've got a great mechanical machine there, treat it right and itll last for another generation. The stitch example in the machine more likely indicates that it has been serviced, depending on how much you use your machine you should take it in to get serviced every 6months to a year, that still being there means it was probably serviced before it was put away. but the broken needle is kind of a wild card though, so I would say take it to get serviced when you have the time/moneys. Also, you've got a button hole on there too! If you can find the foot for it it looks like it might be a one step button hole, which is awesome. Congrats on your new machine! Also re: sewing makes me feel stupid- "the first step to being kind of good at something is sucking at something" You allready dont suck, so you're on your way!

Thank you Sarah, that's really good to know! Yeah, my biggest challenge with sewing is probably that my brain isn't very practiced with it, so when something goes wrong I panic 🤣 My partner Desh was an absolute gem and helped me sew an entire cosplay this summer- that video is coming up soon! It definitely highlights my strengths and weaknesses 🥴

This has been very helpful. I bought my own, but I had no idea about the backstitch lever. Thank you for the video! (I'm going as Sailor Moon for an upcoming con)

"its hard to stab yourself with a sewing machine" as someone who sat next to someone in last minute prep for a school fashion class show who punctured her thumb to the bone and needed 3 people to help her get the machine off her and to some medical attention... it wasnt that hard all it takes is a misplaced thumb and scarred as /i/ am from that (and i was only the direct witness and it haunts me imagine how she feels) ive had near misses of hitting my moving needle bar with my thumbnail several times its easy to get lost on the work and not the soft meat this machine could dig into.
