My mom bought me a Chanel powder brush when I was 9. She bought me a makeover to cheer me up after I had been newly diagnosed with a chronic illness. That brush is the only thing I still have from that makeover and I hardly use it. I can’t part with it though. I can’t even put it in storage.

It's ok to have doubles of a brush you use everyday! Don't declutter more just bc keeping ~29 eye brushes sounds way worse than ~12 lol

Hannah, I love that you haven’t lost touch with reality and you are mindful of the items you need, luxuries that you enjoy, and keeping your collection functional and clutter free. I find that space helps me keep my collection in check. I refuse to buy space for an unnecessary overflow of items.

As my makeup skills improved I found myself purchasing better and more expensive brushes.
And when I purchased better brushes my makeup skills would again improve.
I have full sets of Elf, Real Techniques, Zoeva, Wayne Goss, and Chikuhodo, purchased in that order.
I always tell people to buy the best brushes that they can afford because it really does make a difference.
FYI my Zoeva and Wayne Goss brands are my favourites and I have multiples of my most used brushes.
    I could never declutter them.
Love to you Hannah and thanks so much for sharing. 💖🌸💖🌸💖🌸💖

I only have Zoeva brushes. I really do like them. Cant compare to anything other than realtechniques - they are way better than those and have lasted for years! I’ve also had a set of charlotte tilbury brushes, briefly, but i sold them again. Zoeva is so much better.

Maybe you could use the short handle brushes for traveling. Keep them in a travel/makeup bag ?

You really don't need to feel bad and justify how many brushes you're keeping. If you use them, they have a purpose and are worthy of their home. 🙂
I keep one of each of my face brushes, but have over 30 eye brushes. That's just what works, I'm unapologetic. 😇

I noticed a big difference in brushes between synthetic & natural hair bristles when using pressed powders. The natural hair brushes just pick up more product & seem to blend out powders more evenly. I do not own overly expensive natural hair brushes, all mine are from Esum or Sephora Collection. I found once I picked them up I just wasn't using any of my other eyeshadow brushes anymore. I've been decluttering those to good homes or putting aside for Halloween/Cosplay use. While I agree that you don"t have to pay big bucks for good brushes, brushes do make a difference. My art teachers always told me "it's a poor(meaning bad) artist who blames his tools" lol. So I think it's using the right tools, not the most expensive, that matters :) Sometimes it can take awhile to find the right tool...
I personally love shorter handled brushes. My eyesight is not what is was & I must sit very close to my magnifying mirror when doing my mu & I often startle myself by banging the brush handle against the mirror. I understand it's preferable when working on clients to have longer handles but for self application I'm fine with shorter handles. It seems only travel sets have eye brushes with short handles unfortunately.

I have a *slight* propensity for purchasing brushes. I just love them and feel compelled to try as many as I can! But, the feeling of being overwhelmed really got to me. My solution was to store some on my vanity for daily use and put the rest away in a closet. When I get bored with what's on the vanity, I pull a new set from storage. It's working out so far! Let's pray it continues! 😂

Did a brush declutter last year and gave all the ones I did not like to my 16 year old niece (who now has more than you) Still have way too many, but at this moment in time I'm not prepared to let them go. I prefer natural hair brushes and almost clean them on the daily. Love Zoeva,Sigma and some Real Techniques and my natural hair blush and powder brushes from Barbara Hofmann. Don't have really highend ones like Wayne Goss, Sonia G or the fancy Japanese ones. Might need to check Rephr as all the people who tested them, speak so highly of them.
Also decluttering is not about numbers, but about getting rid of things you (no longer) like.

I watched the Rephr Kickstarter video and it really has me feeling some feelings that I'm having a hard time wrapping my brain around. Something about the way they talk about not knowing anything about make-up rubs me the wrong way?? I don't know. Maybe this is PTSD from being mansplained to a gazillion times and gatekept (gatekeeped??) when enjoying things that guys like to gatekeep, but I got some weird vibes. I guess I'm saying this because I'd love your thoughts. I know you met with one of the owners and am wondering if you guys had any convos along these lines? It's so odd to me to see their video with some of my fave beautuber faces highlighted but they are they benefiting or are they just talking heads supporting "The Man"? I'm not trying to come across as salty, I'm really not. It's just something I've thought a lot about as so many people rave about these brushes. It gives me pause and makes me wonder if maybe I would be better off supporting a woman-owned brand instead. Anyways, sorry for the long-winded comment. I truly love your videos, thoughts, rambles, eye looks, etc and would love to hear your eloquent way of explaining some of these things!

If I kept my brushes out, our Mickey cat would destroy them! This was fun but painful too, watching those lovely short brushes on the chopping block. I keep my shorter brushes in a coffee mug that leaked but has sentimental value; so I have a practical reason to hold onto everything. I'm just about to go through my own makeup and put away some spring shades and bring out the full summer tones that have been packed up since September, so this was a little motivation to get moving.

Aging Ophelia I think it’s hygienic to store brushes in a drawer . The daily dust is icky. I have a naughty cat too but I mainly keep for dust .
I use small boxes of jewelry or mugs or small used up candle jars to store my brushes

I love your declutter videos with your thought process. I gave over half away . I began with cheaper Mac seasonal brushes and eventually bought the actual Mac brush or have several sets of Wayne Goss brushes.

I’ve recently gotten obsessed with buying makeup brushes. Up until recently, I didn’t even own any natural hair brushes except a MAC travel set I bought years ago before they went synthetic. I didn’t know what a big difference brushes made until I bought some halfway decent ones. I really want to invest in Zoeva brushes as it’s a brand that makes quality brushes but that I can actually afford. I would love some Sonia G, Wayne Goss, or Japanese made brushes. I’m also interested in trying out the rephr brushes as they seem like they might be well made and pretty affordable. Love seeing other people’s brush collection!

Do you know if you have the older Tom Ford brushes or the newer ones? The older ones were made with animal hair (and are superior, in my opinion), and the new versions are synthetic. Did Rachel mention if they were the OG ones or the new versions??

I think they must be the old ones, because the bristles are exactly like the Rephr ones, which are goat hair.

    • @Sarah_lettice
      @Sarah_lettice 5 лет назад +1

You can tell by looking at the handle. If the Tom Ford brush only has ‘Japan’ written under the handle then it is the original goat hair. If it has a list of letters/numbers next to Japan then it is the newer synthetic version. Hope this helps! ☺️

Twenty-seven eye brushes sounds right. Seriously. I keep some of my jacked up older eye brushes for my kid to use for halloween makeup, but sometimes if I have a really stainy shadow I dig them out rather than getting it on my good brushes.

Don’t you travel a bit with your small business? It might be a good idea to keep those for travel! Same with a few duplicates you wanted to get rid of.
A type of brush I don’t see you having much of are small, detail eye brushes. Not that you NEED them, just something I personally like to have.
Of course, I say this and have hundreds of expensive brushes between my personal collection, travel collection, collection I keep at my boyfriends, collection o keep at my office AND the brushes I use in my freelance kit 😂😂 Great brushes are my Achilles heel!
