i remember the creator of the wolfenstein and doom engines was told by the rest of his team over and over again that he needed to add this and that, and he thought about it for a while and then just said, "no, people just want to run around shooting things." then later he fired them all. i'm not sure if that's exactly how the story went, or how it went down, but it's something like that i think. simple does not mean stupid. simple can also mean brilliant.
Close. Carmack and Romero fired Tom Hall at the beginning of Doom's development because he wanted to make an interconnected story driven game. Carmack's tech couldn't make an interconnected world like that and the crew also just liked shooting things. Everything else would slow down the action. Hall sulked and Carmack wanted him gone.

To be fair wolfenstein was boring asf franchise who never dare to show the character growth and is just white man bad even though the main character is white. But they never let me forget what other whites are doing, for doom it was cool but nothing special honestly and is just run around shoot with almost no mechanics other than change the weapons for different enemy types. But it was way better than wolfenstein.
