They built the bridge on the ground and used a new machine that can raise it up and lower it and drive it into place. It was cool to watch them do it when I would drive past there every morning for work.
If I understand the runway renewal process, they are removing existing Concrete which is 12 - 18 inches thick. They are then replacing the it with Asphalt paving. That makes more sense than pouring more Concrete, which requires 21 - 28 days to properly cure for strength. Asphalt can be compacted, cooled, and used within hours, not weeks. I used to work for Boeing Everett. I spent time at Paine Field which is the airport next to the Boeing Everett mega factory where they make wide body twin aisle aircraft. There are very specific safety rules that everyone has to follow. Driving a vehicle on runway can only be done between landings and takeoffs. Aircraft landing on a ground vehicle is not recommended.
I’ve read about a similar project at Frankfurt airport that the asphalt doesn’t harden enough in the few hours they have such that the planes landing there the next day create small ‘imprints’. To correct this, they replaced the top layer again the next night.
In many ways the Europeans are ahead of us Anglos. It may have looked like chaos from an outsider's view, like an American or an Aussie like me, but I'm sure it was a highly organised and experienced crew who drilled everything down to the minute. This was a real treat to watch.
Man i wanted to see the paving. My understanding is they use rather unique and expensive pavement because the weight of the planes just destroys regular asphalt (we forget there is like 20 tons of weight on a 2x2 foot area under the front wheel). This is one of the more unique and cool videos ive seen in a long time. No one else is showing overnight airport construction on the utube - keep up the creativity! That's crazy liquidated damages..... I thought 2k per day was crazy for us. I've heard of 10k per day on some medium sized projects.
@@Smokeygigieee where I live they built a bridge and ripped down the old one and I was told if they didnt finish on time it was one million per day fine for each day they was over. The only reason I believe it was it was a pretty decent sized bridge going over a on ramp to a highway. They built the bridge on the ground and used a new machine that can raise it up and lower it and drive it into place. It was cool to watch them do it when I would drive past there every morning for work.
Runways costs an average, 400-600 million euros. The newly built runway in Dublin was constructed at a cost of about 350 million.
And we know how those Swiss are about their watches.
Chaos isnt the right word here
Their fast af
As always an awesome video
Thanks for watching Andy
In many ways the Europeans are ahead of us Anglos. It may have looked like chaos from an outsider's view, like an American or an Aussie like me, but I'm sure it was a highly organised and experienced crew who drilled everything down to the minute. This was a real treat to watch.
When he said it was almost 3 in the morning I was like yea same here 😅
The 390 on the wheels👀👀👀
Next time do aircraft carrier runway asphalt replacement video with tiny excavators on that ship :)
Imagine if an excavator or pavor went down. Crazy stuff
I imagine they had 2 backups of each on hand nearby. That’d be cheaper then the fine lol
@@kirbyjayrogers5439 I’m sure they have a backup for each crew member too if one is late or ill
My GTA career has me so envious of you my good sir
Imagine if road construction companies moved that fast the roads would be actually smooth and done
there's a highway bridge I drive over daily that's been under construction, for 3 years
Man i wanted to see the paving. (And again stop lying in your click bait title - i know its a half truth because of your specific wording, but it clearly makes the viewer think they are doing a 10000m section in 8 hours). Take care!
Quite the ballet going on out there.
So they tore out what, 12-18" of reinforced concrete and replaced it with asphalt? How is that gonna hold up?
asphalt is the best for airports, as it has higher grip and thus allowing for better braking in bad conditions
it'll also last nearly as long as concrete (not it was not reinforced concrete before)
@@Markus-zb5zd it was latex modified roller compacted concrete that they tore out. it can be driven on in less than an hour after pouring depending on spec
@@imchris5000 and then when it cracks it has to be dug up again where as the asphalt can be easily redone in a year's time with much less costs over time.
I was project manager on project. Much stress to meet these deadlines.
