He needs to drink more water or vitamins, the body will make you do this if it's lacking a major vitamin, I knew a girl that ate dirt but it's because she was missing iron. Went to the doctors and got iron pills and she stopped .

This is the equivalence of pica. He more than likely has low iron.
I worked in the medical field for many years and an OB told a friend of mine she had low iron when she saw her constantly eating ice. I never knew that at that time.
Our body has a way of making us crave certain things when we’re mineral or vitamin deficient.
Please have your yearly health checkups and alert your Dr of any new symptoms you’re experiencing.
