Hey Jarrod ! I have a Lenovo 5 Pro for over 2 years now and everything was amazing with it : gaming, productivity, 3d modeling. But like a month after the end of the minimal warranty, things started to go south : some keys of the keyboard failing to respond consistently, all the usb ports completely being useless except for charging devices... I took a warranty long enough so I hope that Lenovo will make it work again (amazing after-sale service though), but still I thought to give you my personal feedback on that beast that the Lenovo 5 Pro is (or was for now..).
I bought Acer Helios Neo 16 i7 14700hx and RTX 4060 Version. I wanted to go with Legion for the same specs but the only thing that stopped me from purchasing Legion was that it doesn't have Thunderbolt ports. It's 2024 and even $800 - $1000 laptops come with at least 1 thunderbolt Port. I don't understand why Lenovo chose to not give Thunderbolt port in their laptops this year where as every other Brand is considering giving it away in their hier tier Gaming Laptops 🥲 Personally I am already happy with my Acer Helios Neo 16 since it's my first Gaming Laptop and Performance that offers this device is more than enough for me for Works like doing After Effects and Premier Pro and Davinci Resolve. I rarely do gaming 😅 It would be so hactic for me on the Legion because of its too much configurable settings in the Lenovo Vantage Software. Sometimes simple is better over lots of customisation for Content Creators 😅
I bought the legion one mainly because of the design and the keyboard. Basically all the specs of each laptop with similar price ranges are kind of the same anyway. But I do wish I had thunderbolt 4 'cause what's the point of having an i9 without it. Then again they're cutting on cost.
Do you have the 2024 acer predator Helios Neo 16 if you have it plz tell me how's the battery backup for it while gaming and normal usage cause I saw on the reviews and videos it has terrible battery backup
The Acer keyboard has much better travel and tactile feedback. Having Multiple Scleroses I struggle to type on the Legion. This is probably only important to developers and less so for gamers.

Hey Jarrod, recently a lot of Lenovo's LOQ lineup are facing motherboard dead issue, can you make a video covering this topic? Its a very serious issue and in one case even the replacement motherboard died.
Source? First I'm hearing of it, so I can't exactly make a video about something I know nothing about. How many is "a lot"? Update 5 days later: I asked Lenovo and they said that they have found a very small number of cases (relative to the total number of LOQ laptops sold) and are actively looking into it.

So basically the only real difference is the brand, even if this Legion also had the same screen as the Helios. I'd say pick whichever is cheaper in your region.
I find torx screws so much better than phillips. Phillips screws tend to easily break with each failed screwing attempt, while it's very hard to do with torx due to their design.
5:10 I'd argue that the helios should get a *higher* score because of the torx screws since they are way less likely to strip and so are more suited for being unscrewed and re-screwed repeatedly.
What a great review! Thank you. I went down to Microcenter with the exact specs you have here and bought an open box Legion 5. S.M.A.R.T indicated the device had about 120 hours when I took ownership. But I saved 500 bucks. No blemishes, I couldn't be happier!

Hmmmm, i wonder why Lenovo decided to put the ports on the sides. They were putting them directly in the back with 1 extra USB port on each side. That was the deciding factor for me a couple years ago. I absolutely loved it and couldn't believe how much more convenient they were being on the back instead of being on the sides. Im genuinely surprised they stopped putting the ports on the back and put them on the sides and closer to the front.
because they decided to change their cooling system design, there aren't any spaces for the port since that space is for exhaust and intake fans. I also do really love their old port management though, wish they could change their mind in the newer model 😆 (which is most likely not)

Hello Jarrod, I would like to ask an expert like you a question. Is it safe to play games on modern laptops with an external monitor while the laptop's monitor is closed? Will the laptop overheat? Can this affect the monitor? For example, on a 2024 Acer Predator Helios 16 with a hot i9 14900hx processor. This might be a topic for a new video, thank you.
I had a acer nitro 5 ryzen 7 5800h + rtx 3080. The powerbrick itself only really provided ~130 watts or so. So in anything cpu and gpu heavy you were draining the battery. Found it a weird design choice and during a longer gaming session you might have ended up with 40% battery left while plugged in. Not really a great design imo, for multiple reasons. Batteries deteriorate so your session time even while plugged in would get shorter and shorter. I think it should be mandatory for a laptops powerbrick to fully sustain the system under heavy load and the battery being not touched in any way when plugged in. Definitely a way of manufacturers to cut costs, but a bad way imo.

The Vector 16 hx has 240 watt power limit (65w cpu + 175w gpu), while the Vector 17 and Raider ge78 have 250 watt power limit (75w cpu + 175w gpu). What kind of performance difference can we expect between vector 16, and vector 17 or raider ge78 due to the 10w difference in power limit? The vector 16 costs 2700$, which is close to my budget, the ge78 costs 3000$, and vector 17 costs 2800$. Is it worth spending the extra amount for additional 10w cpu power? I bought Acer Helios Neo 16 i7 14700hx and RTX 4060 Version. I wanted to go with Legion for the same specs but the only thing that stopped me from purchasing Legion was that it doesn't have Thunderbolt ports. It's 2024 and even $800 - $1000 laptops come with at least 1 thunderbolt Port.
I don't understand why Lenovo chose to not give Thunderbolt port in their laptops this year where as every other Brand is considering giving it away in their hier tier Gaming Laptops 🥲
Personally I am already happy with my Acer Helios Neo 16 since it's my first Gaming Laptop and Performance that offers this device is more than enough for me for Works like doing After Effects and Premier Pro and Davinci Resolve. I rarely do gaming 😅
It would be so hactic for me on the Legion because of its too much configurable settings in the Lenovo Vantage Software.
Sometimes simple is better over lots of customisation for Content Creators 😅
same, using the 2023 version i7 and 4050 its really a good laptop, people glaze lenovo just cuz the brand is more well known

Made my purchase based on videos like this and I am quite happy with my Lenovo Legion 5i pro. The 230 hz Lenovo display is awesome but I assume the 165 is fine too. I consider Jarrods tech to be my foreign brother as we both like gaming laptops and metal music. Another great video as always.

Hey Jarrod, recently a lot of Lenovo's LOQ lineup are facing motherboard dead issue, can you make a video covering this topic? Its a very serious issue and in one case even the replacement motherboard died.
Yes exactly
Please Jarrod make some comment on this issue
Source? First I'm hearing of it, so I can't exactly make a video about something I know nothing about. How many is "a lot"?
Update 5 days later: I asked Lenovo and they said that they have found a very small number of cases (relative to the total number of LOQ laptops sold) and are actively looking into it.
@@JarrodsTechthe r/lenovoloq subreddit has posts everyday about it, as well as the discord server. Everyone’s guess is a bad batch was sent out. Also had to return mine after problems on day 5.
@@JarrodsTech hey Jarrod there have been many cases in India , you can see on reddit many users Posting about motherboard dead issues in Lenovo LOQ, especially in hx series of 13 th 14th gen and even some 12th gen .
Apparently as here you mentioned that lenovo pushed it's CPU wattage to 70w 80w , it does in these lenovo loq models too and as new lenovo loq is not having that good of cooling for these hx series laptops, and these motherboard in Lenovo LOQ is not having that ptm paste which is used in legion model ,
All in all lenovo loq models are prone to motherboard dead issues and company is refusing to make a public comment, please look into this.
And even here in India lenovo has replaced some motherboards with refurbished ones causing them to die again in few cases users have mentioned same laptop having motherboard dead 2-3 times then after pushing much they refunded otherswise it's havoc.
My Legion 5 Pro recently died and first thing I noticed was tons of posts on Reddit with the same issue all within the same month
So basically the only real difference is the brand, even if this Legion also had the same screen as the Helios. I'd say pick whichever is cheaper in your region.
Design language is different tok
I've just ordered the Legion Pro 5 (R9), using your deals website.
I hope it lives up to expectations.
Always loved Lenovo's gaming laptop designs.
What a great review! Thank you. I went down to Microcenter with the exact specs you have here and bought an open box Legion 5. S.M.A.R.T indicated the device had about 120 hours when I took ownership. But I saved 500 bucks. No blemishes, I couldn't be happier!
i stick with the helios any day, 65w is just enough for light work if u had to move it around..is a personal case scenario of how much u move around
Hi jarrod, thanks to your in-depth reviews. I got myself legion pro 5i 2024 model (idk why but 2024 was cheaper than 2023 model) and its a real beast of a system. A huge upgrade from my i5-10210u laptop.

Lol that will put it in sleep which will not allow you to use the external monitor
He always stress test the laptop with closed lid on reviews
this year's lenovo legion looks so clean its actually hard to see that its a gaming laptop and not a high end premium work laptop
Thanks for the video,Jarrod. I gonna get Lenovo Legion soon

If there isn't major performance difference due to additional 10w power, then I will go for vector 16, since it will be little more portable. Thanks for the Video, Definitely helped with my decision between these 2. Although i was looking at the 14900HX options. I choose the Lenovo, the clean look and portability with just about equal performance has me sold !
Cool hope it goes well!
How is it going?
