I‘m glad he’s being successful outside the cage but I don’t see him in his retirement before 38yo. If we’re lucky we’re getting 2-3 more fights. Volk is such a beast, being this competitive at this age is insane. He’s no heavyweight. So glad we‘re witnessing this era. Volks probably one of my most favorite fighters ever.

One thing I think people don't realize about Volk is that on top of his IQ, he closed a hole in his game that both Makachev and Topuria exploited which he used to get away with when he was younger. Obviously, Volk outclasses Lopes due to his fight IQ and overall skill, but I suspect Lopes's team operated under the idea that Volk had that hole in his game and that they could knock him out by exploiting it. They had no options after that, because he's good everywhere else. Once Volk figures a guy out, it's basically over for him. Everything he said during the week is exactly what he did in the fight.
What's the hole in his game? Just his ability to get knocked out? Because he was out striking Ilia and looking solid and the same for Islam before he got knocked out by both. All Diego had to do was put pressure on him and not try to slowly walk him down and turn it into an exchange fight. That's how he almost knocked Volk out multiple times in the first fight. This time he was just walking him down slowly and losing almost every exchange.

He had this issue for his entire career where he backed out from from encounters with his head flinging backwards. He did get hit from time to time long before the knockouts came. Frankly, only Topuria took advantage of it because he's at that level. I don't even count the Makachev fight because he's mainly a grappler type finisher. Makachev made the adjustment and Volk didn't read it. Makachev, like Topuria, is at that level where one miscalculation can shut anyone off or down. Volk is elite like they are. Lopes is not. Lopes "simply putting pressure" on Volk would not have worked here because he's not at that level. It would've gotten him beaten up faster, especially since Volk figured him out after the first fight and had adjustments even for his adjustments. That is the difference between the elite fighters and good ones. Give Volk his due.
