  • There was strong trade at the top end of the market at Keeneland September, with five yearlings selling for a million or more on day 1.
While stringent COVID-19 protocols put in place to allow the world’s largest yearling sale to be held at all may have dulled some of the electricity typically felt in the building when high-dollar horses are changing hands, competition for the top lots remained intense, with five transactions reaching the seven-figure mark and 23 offerings selling for $500,000 or more. In total, 109 head changed hands for gross receipts of $40,680,000 at an average rate of $373,211 and median of $330,000. With 62 horses led out unsold, the RNA rate was 36.26%.
In addition to offering online bidding and increasing its capacity for phone bids, Keeneland added another bidding area in the far back walking ring, which seemed popular with buyers.

FANTASY BUYER HERE....I think the fillies that got over a 1.4 mill was way too high. Abroad mare band I would seek release two fillies for that budget.

@@109367 I still couldn't afford that, lol but I doubt sadly those at that price are going to amount to much? I was watching a maiden / novice race the other day where there was some expensive and well home breds in a race a thinking how some so called little trainers had entered horses baught for less than ten thousand pounds in the same race and how unfair it was, needless to say the less expensive finished near last than first, whereas the expensive / well breds finished near the the front.

@@nightowl7459 Some "cheap" horses have done great on the track, far more expensive ones have been absolute duds or didn't even make it to the track. The most expensive horse to ever sell in auction ran three times, never won.

@@109367 I know of a few very well bread and a few expensive horses that haven't done much on the track / racecourse so it's not a science that if you breed the best with the best you get the best or you get what you paid for but in reality the bargain basement sorts a very far and few between, I bet most top trainers wouldn't give a horse the wasn't particularly well bred or bought for less than 75 thousand the time of day, but there are a few exceptions like California Chrome who was a not particularly well bred who is one of the better horse I've seen.
