This was the video I needed to see. I stopped doing art last year because I got in an accident and I couldn't work the same nor did it look the same. It all felt ugly and subpart. So I stopped. Yo, good to see you back and in better health! I can honestly relate to the overall tone of this. I’ve recently decided to withdraw from school (for mental and physical health) despite being admitted into my desired concentration for art. I wanted to strongly pursue animation! However, the years of burnout from my previous schools have left me feeling over art. Until a few days ago, I’ve found this spark come back to draw. Inspiration hit me and I’ve never been happier. I definitely want to be consistent again, but I don’t want art to ever be something I hate. It put me through a lot in school and just sort of built up over time. I’m 24, so just feeling late to really understanding and developing my art is what keeps me from just doing it.
Toxic perfection is a real thing! I suffer from this so much. Its taken me years and years to let go of this notion that if my work isnt perfect its not worth anything. I still struggle with it and constant drive myself into the ground trying to make everything perfect. Yet my favorite art styles, are the ones that are so free and full of artifacts and stray lines that when looked at as a whole, is just a beautiful pieces. Maybe its my soul calling out for freedom. So glad ur back!

When I was in university I couldn't finish the smallest ppt before the deadline, it was the worse also, my therapist once said, " If you can't finish it on time because of perfectionism you will get 0, and believe me 5 is better than 0."
dang tysm angel... ive been following ur journey for a long ass time, and ive grown personally, too, a lot. 2 yrs ago, i was a depressed teen about to graduate high school and not knowing wtf i wanted to do in life. entering university really helped and even got me back into my hobbies like drawing again. i was able to defeat my perfectionistic mindset in my art and fell in love with it all over again. but... i also learned like once an artist, always an artist. i grew up drawing, literally pencil at hand when i came out of the womb. yes there were some months or even years that passed where i didn't draw, but i was always an artist at heart. even if now im not professionally going into art, i realized i have a perfectionistic mindset on everything i do and have since i was a kid. I realized it was not only my art never good enough, but also my entire existence. "what will people say?" hit me like a bag of bricks. in the end of the day, i dont give a shit about what specific ppl think of me, but i care cuz it's feedback, it's a reflection of who i am, it's a reflection on whether im a failure or not, so i'm afraid of what people think of me. now i'm a young adult. i have a full-time job. my perfectionistic mindset carried over into my day to day at work. if i made the smallest mistake, i would hate myself, shame myself, call myself names, say that i hate myself, when deep down, i dont and havent believed those things for a long time. im in a good and productive mental state to realize omfg my old habits of perfectionism affects me in everything even if i learned how to deal with it when it comes to my art. perfectionism can be great to get results and get better, but like you said sometimes it can beat you up. this video really resonated with me because perfectionism can be a shit show for your art but also your idea of self-worth, social life, and so much more. thank you, angel, and glad to see that you finally got to grow hair!

Ah man, we missed you. Perfectionism is one hell of a drug, i've experienced the same exact things multiple times, and it's such a shitty mindset to be in, it consumes you to the core. I'm still learning to not let perfectionism get the best of me, but iit has gotten so much better nonetheless. Either way, i'm SO happy that you're in a better place now, and i can't wait to see the next video. (Also remember to not beat yourself up for it, we're all humans, even grandaddy sometimes misses a few steps and that's okay 👾). We love you Angel, welcome back, wish you a wonderful day ❤

This makes me happy. Angel was a huge influence for me and when he went quiet, I felt like I was on my own. Like, I lost a mentor in some way. I still did art nonetheless but seeing Angel again is just refreshing.
Although this experience was so hard and you’re now kicking yourself for it, it’s an amazing example of how mistakes, however big, help you learn and improve. Also by taking full responsibility and sharing you’re story with all your followers you may be preventing many others to not make the same mistake you did and that’s very honorable. I’m the youngest sibling so I’ve been able to watch my brother’s lives and I’ve made better decisions based off their mistakes and this kind of feels like the same sort of situation for you and your audience. So thank you so much for being so honest and becoming an even better teacher in the process!

Something I learn recently was to let yourself make ugly art/drawings. I'm never satisfied with my drawings but everyone assures me its good although I don't like it. But I did it, I let myself make something ugly and just the fact that I did it was good enough, even if it's ugly find out WHAT is "ugly" about it AFTER you make it. You can do it. :)

I can relate so much, these past 2 years have shown me that how you perceive what you're working on, will reflect on the outcome itself. It's ok not to be perfect, but internalizing the concept is very hard when you have high standards and always seem to be failing at meeting them. In my opinion, there can be mistakes in life, but every experience is important for our development; what actually counts is how we manage to solve our problems and learn to cope with our inherent imperfection ps. I have this terrible warp of time in my brain where a year really doesn't feel that long. It feels like a week. A month is a season and a day is an hour. So relatable. This captures the weird reason I stopped posting my art and painting in general. I always felt and still feel my paintings aren't there yet - whatever that means. I keep waiting on that moment they will be "perfect" enough and I can't help but rate them per my own damn metric. And it's infuriating! Also, I easily flame up when anyone reaches out or tries to check up. Sigh. I'd try to slump out of it. Great to see you back bigger and better.

The time and struggle you go through helped to pave a less bumpy and more streamlined and helpful road for those who’d like to get to the same destination you wanted to go to. Even this perfectionist mindset and perceived time wasted is just more lessons for us to learn for ourselves, and therefore is still useful and helpful. Clear goal, roadmap that leads to the goal, and daily schedule (key) to follow the roadmap to achieve that goal. And bitesized goals that lead to bigger goals. Understand that perfectionism is unachievable, but greatness is, and all it takes is practice. Not being good. Just good deliberate practice. Nice stuff mate.

Yet my favorite art styles, are the ones that are so free and full of artifacts and stray lines that when looked at as a whole, is just a beautiful pieces. Maybe its my soul calling out for freedom. also, my therapist once said, " If you can't finish it on time because of perfectionism you will get 0, and believe me 5 is better than 0."
dang tysm angel... ive been following ur journey for a long ass time, and ive grown personally, too, a lot. 2 yrs ago, i was a depressed teen about to graduate high school and not knowing wtf i wanted to do in life. entering university really helped and even got me back into my hobbies like drawing again. i was able to defeat my perfectionistic mindset in my art and fell in love with it all over again.
but... i also learned like once an artist, always an artist. i grew up drawing, literally pencil at hand when i came out of the womb. yes there were some months or even years that passed where i didn't draw, but i was always an artist at heart. even if now im not professionally going into art, i realized i have a perfectionistic mindset on everything i do and have since i was a kid. I realized it was not only my art never good enough, but also my entire existence. "what will people say?" hit me like a bag of bricks. in the end of the day, i dont give a shit about what specific ppl think of me, but i care cuz it's feedback, it's a reflection of who i am, it's a reflection on whether im a failure or not, so i'm afraid of what people think of me.
now i'm a young adult. i have a full-time job. my perfectionistic mindset carried over into my day to day at work. if i made the smallest mistake, i would hate myself, shame myself, call myself names, say that i hate myself, when deep down, i dont and havent believed those things for a long time. im in a good and productive mental state to realize omfg my old habits of perfectionism affects me in everything even if i learned how to deal with it when it comes to my art.
perfectionism can be great to get results and get better, but like you said sometimes it can beat you up. this video really resonated with me because perfectionism can be a shit show for your art but also your idea of self-worth, social life, and so much more. thank you, angel, and glad to see that you finally got to grow hair!

Ah man, we missed you. Perfectionism is one hell of a drug, i've experienced the same exact things multiple times, and it's such a shitty mindset to be in, it consumes you to the core. I'm still learning to not let perfectionism get the best of me, but iit has gotten so much better nonetheless. Either way, i'm SO happy that you're in a better place now, and i can't wait to see the next video. (Also remember to not beat yourself up for it, we're all humans, even grandaddy sometimes misses a few steps and that's okay 👾). We love you Angel, welcome back, wish you a wonderful day ❤

This is so relatable. Our passions can have difficult or even painful eras, but there’s always something deeper happening meant to push us to evolve in some way. This makes me happy. Angel was a huge influence for me and when he went quiet, I felt like I was on my own. Like, I lost a mentor in some way. I still did art nonetheless but seeing Angel again is just refreshing.
Although this experience was so hard and you’re now kicking yourself for it, it’s an amazing example of how mistakes, however big, help you learn and improve. Also by taking full responsibility and sharing you’re story with all your followers you may be preventing many others to not make the same mistake you did and that’s very honorable. I’m the youngest sibling so I’ve been able to watch my brother’s lives and I’ve made better decisions based off their mistakes and this kind of feels like the same sort of situation for you and your audience. So thank you so much for being so honest and becoming an even better teacher in the process!

Something I learn recently was to let yourself make ugly art/drawings. I'm never satisfied with my drawings but everyone assures me its good although I don't like it. But I did it, I let myself make something ugly and just the fact that I did it was good enough, even if it's ugly find out WHAT is "ugly" about it AFTER you make it. You can do it. :)

I can relate so much, these past 2 years have shown me that how you perceive what you're working on, will reflect on the outcome itself.
It's ok not to be perfect, but internalizing the concept is very hard when you have high standards and always seem to be failing at meeting them.
In my opinion, there can be mistakes in life, but every experience is important for our development; what actually counts is how we manage to solve our problems and learn to cope with our inherent imperfection

I'm sorry to hear you experienced this shitty block. You didn't fail anyone- the people who are meant to stay, follow and support you, they will, it's a learning process as shitty as it was look how much you have learnt from it and appreciate it all (as you do by the sounds of it). Thank you for sharing this so honestly. This really helps, even though I'm not an artist (yet hopefully) this can be applied to any area of life. So relatable. This captures the weird reason I stopped posting my art and painting in general. I always felt and still feel my paintings aren't there yet - whatever that means. I keep waiting on that moment they will be "perfect" enough and I can't help but rate them per my own damn metric. And it's infuriating! Also, I easily flame up when anyone reaches out or tries to check up. Sigh. I'd try to slump out of it. Great to see you back bigger and better.

Edit: naw mate this isn’t a depressing video, its inspiring. The time and struggle you go through helped to pave a less bumpy and more streamlined and helpful road for those who’d like to get to the same destination you wanted to go to. Even this perfectionist mindset and perceived time wasted is just more lessons for us to learn for ourselves, and therefore is still useful and helpful.
Clear goal, roadmap that leads to the goal, and daily schedule (key) to follow the roadmap to achieve that goal. And bitesized goals that lead to bigger goals. Understand that perfectionism is unachievable, but greatness is, and all it takes is practice. Not being good. Just good deliberate practice. Nice stuff mate.

The ability to let go is a big lesson I learned being an artist. Nothing I've made is perfect and i have a ton to learn, but never letting go would keep me from improving in the first place.
