    My Golden Retriever helps rescue Scout, a completely traumatized rescue puppy. We have no idea how to even begin building his confidence, he's one of the most scared dogs we have ever rescued.

    I worked with traumatized kids. Kids who had been trafficked as toddlers. One of my students, 6 years old, was new and wouldn’t speak in the classroom but would growl if we got too close. He sat under his desk on the floor. I put tape down on the floor around his desk and told him I would not enter his safe area so he did not need to growl. I told him I know you don’t trust people but I will not ever touch your body, watch me and you will see I will not touch anyone’s body, you are safe here. I would sit on the floor outside the taped area and would read books to him, talk to him. It took 3 days for him to talk to me and two more weeks before he came out from under his desk. In a school year he learned to read and write and laugh and play. When he moved out of my classroom into a regular classroom he drew me a picture of us holding hands and smiling. It’s my favorite piece of art. This dog reminds me of that boy.

    • @unavailableusername9694
      @unavailableusername9694 Month ago +28

      It could just be that he has had very little human contact, or he has been alone. It's not always abuse, though unfortunately that is a possibility.

      A lot of the dogs they rescue are from North Macedonia and because they mention he's never been in a home before he was probably a street dog or born into a shelter where there simply wasn't enough money food or love for this dog. And it's pretty common for people to abuse street dogs so that's probably what happened sadly. Thank God he made it to a place that he's going to be loved.❤

      Yeah honestly not sure, when Happy Shelter picked him up off the street he was already like this. He really flinches any time you go near him, dogs have a fear period when they’re younger and if something frightens them, they can be terrified for years. Poor thing we’ve never seen a dog so scared, a lot of patience is needed with him 🤞

    I transported a dog that was traumatized like this from Oklahoma to CO a few years ago. My pet sitter fostered her and it was super super difficult because she was so terrified. The first week she had her I went for a walk with them, and she got out of her harness and ran under a parked car. I had to drag her out..... it was heartbreaking, but the good news is that today she is a completely different dog. She is super happy and carefree!!! She just needed love, care and time.....

    3 years ago I adopted a traumatized puppy. I remember she was so scared. She tried to hide under the car and when we got home she would hide in corners and avoid us. The vet told us she was likely abused severely.
    I sat in the middle of the room with a thing of treats. Everytime the puppy came to me, she got a treat. Before long she was sitting beside me.
    3 years later, Willow is a happy and very affectionate dog. She loves to snuggle and play. She can still be very anxious about certain things (she has to see a professional to get her nails trimmed). I'll always remember the first time she played with a toy and I could see the joy in her. She's my best friend these days.

      People are concerned about dogs being so scared for being treated bad, while eating other animals that were even badly traumatised and then Murdered! Why this selective sympathy? We humans are equally bad to all animals, but you notice it only when it's about animals you care for!💯

Now with this said…how about you not fucking assume you know shit about what strangers on the Internet eat or pretend to know what we fucking care about! Dumb Ass! What you can safely assume is I DGAF about your opinion! Now have a seat 🖕 and watch your mouth!

      Unfortunately it's not so rare. I worked in an animal shelter. It's unbelievable how some human beings treat their reliable friends - dogs, cats, even rabbits. I didn't count how many hours I spent sitting in a kennel, just being there, silent or talking, offering treats.
      And when they learned to trust again, they are so thankful and loyal towards their new family / owner.

    • @aker1973

      I adopted a dog that had been abused by her owner. He abandoned her at the pound when he got tired of beating her. I always suspected something was up. He took me to the emergency room because she bit me on the wrist with her canine tooth. For the first 15 days, she was literally going crazy because I couldn't get her to bite me. She liked being petted, but she always expected to get hit. It was a tough time. She wouldn't let me leave the house, putting her paws on my feet, just in case I didn't come back. She died nine years ago, her last year in palliative care, in an orthopedic bed, with the bathroom at home. She had dysplasia in her front legs. I bathed her myself. She ate powdered kibble because of dental problems, meat and fish broth, vegetables, and stew-half a liter of it. I had everything sorted out, all I needed was a phone call. When I discovered a pressure ulcer, that was it. The vet couldn't believe it; it was hard for her because she didn't want to go under any circumstances. She couldn't leave me alone. They were 16 wonderful years. She lived as she deserved. She is at home, along with her partner and 3 cats.

    If you have room in the garden setup a shad there. So new arrivals can decompress without being forced into the house. Many rescues havent been in a house. Its another stress factor. Also they are right next to the gras. Which makes it a lot easier to go for a wee and po.

    The thought of whatever had to happen to this poor dog in Macedonia to make him this terrified is infuriating to me. On a positive note, I read about a teenager in North Macedonia that started a shelter on his own to give some relief to the dire stray population there. It's slightly comforting to know that someone in Macedonia is attempting to make change.

      I don't know whether he is or not, but if Scout is from the same part of Macedonia that one or more of the other dogs (I want to say Luna was one of them, but I can't remember for sure; Louie and Joky might have been as well) were from, then (for who knows what reason) the people in that particular region/town beat the street dogs. It's super sad.

      Not really. Animals brutally kill each other all the time. Wolves have been documented torturing and killing prey just for fun, not even eating it after it’s dead. Humans are the only species that actually try to help other animal species.

    I totally appreciate your kindness and patience and understand there are practical issues. Can I suggest using a harness rather than dragging him on a collar or slip lead? That could have been painful and possibly more frightening. Allowing Scout to adjust step by step, looking away, and all the other things you do for your rescues warms my heart, thank you

    We had a dog like this, totally shut down and checked out. Her personality coming out was the best thing and she was the goofiest dog we ever had. She would run sideways and sleep on her back with her legs straight up! Having another dog to be her buddy was more than half the work done, but she would react badly to men and people wearing things on their heads, so we think a man wearing hats would hurt her as she was also scared of some objects.

      Yes, our rescued dog was very wary of all men for months. It was a big relief when he one day moved closer to let our neighbour pet him. He had to take time to figure out that some men are nice friendly people who get along with people and dogs.

    Das ist einfach nur grausam 😭 das zerreißt mich.Bin selbst im Tierschutz und muss euch sagen,ich finde diese Vorgehensweise nicht ganz so gut.Das ist ein absolut traumatisierter Hund,dem man einfach seine Zeit geben muss.Für mich war da viel zu viel Interaktion mit dem verängstigten Tier direkt zu Anfang.Ich liebe eure Arbeit und alles,was ihr tut 🙏 aber hier hätte ich anders gehandelt.Ich hoffe,seine Seele kann heilen 🙏❤️🥺🍀

    I was a little confused that she said treats are not the answer when the dog was in the freeze state. In Rockys videos it worked a lot of times. It helped better the more treat motivated the dogs were. Especially because the smell could help to break the state and associate the leash with something positive. He also just applied gentle pressure and did small steps. I hope it worked out better the rest of the video. (I paused at 03:17)

      Sometimes when things are too much for a dog they won't receive treats, they're too shut down and scared. Until they've decompressed and gotten over the initial fear they won't take them. Even my golden retriever won't take treats off vets because she gets too scared. And that's a goldie. They live for food 😂 he's way too shit down to receive anything right now, training and treats won't work when they're over their threshold.

    • @Screechie78
      @Screechie78 14 days ago

      When dogs are frozen like this they won't take treats. It takes time and patience, and not a silly RUclipsr who's like "o m g I'm so scared right now". Rocky Kanaka knows how to be patient.

    • @WhoSaysPianoCantRock
      @WhoSaysPianoCantRock 14 days ago

      @Screechie78
      You also watch Rocky, right? So you probabbly will know some of his patterns, one of it is always trying to offer a treat, mostly after he sit down with the back turn to them, talking to the camera for a bit. He also tried the "pacman" a few times with dogs that were more or equally frozen. They mostly start to relax once they are not the center of the attention. But it usually take some time.
      It's also not about if they take the treat right away or not. He uses it as sensory input to see if it manages to break the frozen state.
      And the approach to just drag the dog outside and then back in. Was not really helping the process.
      I guess the way should have been blocked before the dog came in, so they can lead them to the designated place where they can decompress after the exhausting journey. Maybe the next time.
      I guess they were equally stressed from the travel as the dog. They learn along the way and helped more dogs than the most of us provably did. But I agree, it takes much more patience in cases like this.

      My dog was frozen for 2 weeks. I would just hug her for few hours and let sit for 2 weeks. She's very happy now.
