I’ve just got my starter plot today! So glad I found your channel ‘cause I need to learn a lot fast😊 Up to now I have only been a home gardener growing flowers and shrubs. Now I’m eager to grown my own vegis.
Watched 10 minutes: There is so much more to life and gardening than thinking worrying and discussing what other people think of you and your allotment.
Just got a 200ft x 30ft plot, already rotavated, started on the hedges and weeds, spending the weekend clearing up, edging and strimming. Weed fabric ordered, pollytunnel second hand bought, water butts bought....tools cleaned up and ready to go....
I got my first allotment today! I was one of the lucky ones. It has beds, shed and compost bins. It just needs weeding and it’s ready! Thanks for your honesty in this video mate. Brilliant advice for newbies!
Excellent time of year to get an allotment, couple hours a week and you'll be half way there by spring. 👍 One of the best things is you'll probably get the site to your self as many people leave their plots over winter but it's such a good time to get stuff done.
@@GrowYourOwnLife It's a lovely little plot. Already has pathways, raised beds and a shed, and it has a mains water source directly outside the plot. Been lucky I think. Quite weedy but nothing a day or 2 of elbow grease shouldn't fix. Can't wait to get the keys now!
I have just rented an allotment of a farm who rents out on their farm. This is the first video I have ever watched on allotments. I am so naive on what I am doing but will take help from this video and have subscribed to this channel. The plot is being marked out tomorrow 28th Dec 21. Really looking forward to my new hobby. Thank you for the video.
I think it is true to say “you get out of an allotment what you put in”! The benefits are so varied; exercise, wholesome fruits and veggies, social interaction and a sense of community. I have a plot next to me that has been neglected for three years and it’s infuriating! All the best, Martin.
Very good straight advice. you learn as you go along and get good advice from other allotment holders. i have seen them coming in to our site they tell you what it will look like in a month time .they try to hard and burn them selves out , never to return, do a bit at a time slow and often. and it will get there. just enjoy what you are doing. i have had varius plot for over 40 year now and still enjoy it
Thanks for all advice and explainging how people can see new allotment owner.I just got mine yesterday and I went there and done so much work.It will take me some time but I'll get it ready
Totally agree with what you've said.we have a lot of people on our allotment that just don't put any effort in .don't take one on if you only go once a month or less.loads of people use them as dumping grounds.sad.it took me a year of hard graft just to clear mine.but I love it.
Ross, Great video. The content is so true. Next to my old plot I had neighbours that were hardly on the plot. And yes all the weeds came over to my plot. Now that I have a second plot and I know what to do. Bit by bit and lay down tarp. That is more motivating, because I don’t see the weeds. Have a great weekend Joyce
I've just got my allotment today. It's a half size I think, but it's enough for me to be happy with. I'm starting with a 'measure up' then I'll decide how I want to arrange my beds including raised beds. I shall be down there tomorrow and the idea of at least 10 hours per week will do me in these winter months; it will give me time to plan and construct my plot the best way I can handle it and be able to sort what I feel I need to grow for myself and my family. I don't intend to spend a fortune on it and I shall get what I need when I have saved for it. It will be wonderful to meet and chat to other allotment holders.
Great video. You couldn't have been more inclusive of all types of plot holders and described every situation. All I would add is if you don't have running water. A water source is your first port of call.
Superb advice. Thanks for switching me on to the idea that Ive just signed up to be part of a "community". Whether I get on with them or not, I have responsibilities to the people around me. I never thought about that aspect really. I send the forms back tomorrow and most likely will be on the allotment next week. Im very glad I work from home and the allotment is only 20minutes walk away. Good luck to you
I already have an allotment and I really enjoyed watching your video. It's so true everything you've said. Great video, a really good explanation of what to expect. Take care Becky

Newbie here, great video putting it the idea of a plot plain and simple you reap what you sow. I will be taking care of my own and I look forward to more videos.
Please don’t assume the council will get you a skip or help you to clear rubbish because many do not. I had a tonne of scrap metal including a bed heads, coat stand and scaffolding rods. Tables & chairs, cushions, even clothing the previous plot holder left behind. It took me 2 months of going to the allotment every day (at least 10 trips to the top) to clear it. I was even expected to cut down a tree and dispose of that myself. It was worth it though - my plot is now tidy and covered.. ready for planting in the spring.
That's a very good point. 👍 In an odd way, I quite like doing that side of allotmenting. Taking an old shed to the recycling centre is kinda therapeutic 😆
Great video, that’s just what it’s like,we have a full plot and have had for many years, yes you must put the work in,yes it can be hard work, but very rewarding, meeting other plot holders and swapping ideas, and not forgetting plenty of fresh fruit and veg,we have the same ideas as you,beg or borrow to get started ,re cycle as much as you can,we have 3 greenhouses and all for free, just dismantle them and assemble on our plot.waiting now for the weather to warm up we take our time as we try to plant out without the risk of frost, after all most plants catch up eventually, one last thing,MUCK OR COMPOST the more the better, happy allotmenteering.
Thanks for commenting, so much can be recycled I struggle to buy anything new as it seems wasteful. I want a good few weeks of dry weather to get a few jobs done. Seems like it's, been a long autumn.
I was thinking of asking a couple of friends if they’d be interested in having an allotment together to share the workload and the produce. I am concerned of us committing then not being able to follow through though. I’ve got more thinking to do!

Hi, can you elaborate on when you said 10:51 “that’s not what allotments are about” on making it look like the cottage aesthetic. I wanna know what people think about that more
Everyone can do what they like on an allotment but for me, they are for growing food, experimenting with techniques and supporting biodiversity with flowers and habit etc. Personally. I don't think people should spend ££££ on allotments, the fun should be in the making do, upcycling & mending
Thanks for this useful advice. At the moment I garden in my small backyard. Can I ask whether its possible to just rent a half plot during the summer only?, as I have raynauds (loss of blood circulation in my hands and feet when it's cold) and so I cannot be outside in winter.
It depends massively. Supply and demand. Public v private. Council allotments outside London with no water may be £30 a year. A private allotments in London with water maybe £500 a year.
My son wanted an allotment and we've just got a plot ...we've cleared like big dead old plants but the soil has glass and other bits of concrete mixed into it do I have to get rid of that and just turn the soil ....I really don't know where to start
I think with allotments you have tk understand that although the plot is yours it's still a shared space. (For many) so unless your plot is enclosed with a 6ft fence. Your actions have direct consequences for others. So others will communicate with you be that positive or sadly negative 😕 Most allotments aren't "private" spaces.
It sounds like this is more about trying to impress your neighbours than anything else. I get you need to be conscientious but you should be doing it for your self not anyone else.
I think you've missed the point. You can do what you like but if you allow weeds to grow you cause problems for other people. An allotment is a community one person not cutting down weeds can lead to thousands of weeds for everyone else.
You know most people click because of the thumbnail it would be kind if uou could at least put one moinute concerning the thumbnail to gove it authenticity.
No offence but this video is very off-putting to me as an almost first-time allotment renter. It portrays existing allotment renters as gossips who spend a lot of time worrying about what the new person is or is not doing. Very odd.
If that's what you take from it, that's down to you. You have to remember an allotment is a shared space. It's a community. When you get groups of people together they all have opinions. This is human nature. Allotments aren't for everyone.
Really useful, some great ideas for newbies! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you. 👍

I'm not getting an allotment to please the neighbours... if they're bothered about the dandelions in mine they've got to chill
😂
I have trouble understanding... What is there to do there in december and january?
Everything. Repairing stuff, putting down manure, mulching, pruning, general maintenance & planning.
I was really excited about getting an allotment untill I saw this.... 😂
Why? What's up?
Thanks for this useful advice. At the moment I garden in my small backyard.
Can I ask whether its possible to just rent a half plot during the summer only?, as I have raynauds (loss of blood circulation in my hands and feet when it's cold) and so I cannot be outside in winter.
Hiya, good to hear your gardening when you can. I know lots of people who only garden May to September and there's nothing wrong with that. 👍
@@GrowYourOwnLife Thank you. I'm going to see if I can put my name down for an allotment.
Good advice it takes commitment not images.
Thank you. 8 years in and I'm not finished. Is a garden ever finished?
I have an allotment but I’m not great at it ...
You dont need to be great, you just need to enjoy it. 👍
So you can have a bbq on a uk allotment?!
Depends on site spercifc rules
On average, how much does an allotment cost?
It depends massively. Supply and demand. Public v private. Council allotments outside London with no water may be £30 a year. A private allotments in London with water maybe £500 a year.
@@GrowYourOwnLife thanks. How big are they typically? I’m in the U.S. I don’t think we have any.
@@joeyslaughter5791 try this, I made it a year or so ago. ruclips.net/video/zdOp7FVOIqQ/видео.html
My son wanted an allotment and we've just got a plot ...we've cleared like big dead old plants but the soil has glass and other bits of concrete mixed into it do I have to get rid of that and just turn the soil ....I really don't know where to start
Are there people who do polyculture or mini food forests?
Sorry dont quite understand the question.
This might be a really dumb question do people steal chickens from an allotment?
People will steal anything from anywhere.
My name is Kenny from northern Kentucky look up the history of biochar for gardening tell everybody you know pass it on
Is it just me or are most of these tips about the other allotmenteers' opinions?
Is an allotment garden suitable for someone with social anxiety?
I think with allotments you have tk understand that although the plot is yours it's still a shared space. (For many) so unless your plot is enclosed with a 6ft fence. Your actions have direct consequences for others. So others will communicate with you be that positive or sadly negative 😕
Most allotments aren't "private" spaces.
The thumbnail is my allotment. I'm talking about my allotment.
My channel is 70% about my allotment. What else do you want?
"What other people think of me is none of my business"
No offence but this video is very off-putting to me as an almost first-time allotment renter. It portrays existing allotment renters as gossips who spend a lot of time worrying about what the new person is or is not doing. Very odd.
If that's what you take from it, that's down to you. You have to remember an allotment is a shared space. It's a community. When you get groups of people together they all have opinions. This is human nature. Allotments aren't for everyone.
@@GrowYourOwnLife Allotments are for anyone who wants one, you mean petty people aren't for everyone.
