Couple ideas - attaching the portals to either side of a suspension glitch that flings it around everywhere - and making an AI that follows you and tries to catch you with a portal attached to it that may or may not send you to your death.
5:59 Multiplayer Monday idea! Each player builds a small castle and then you get a certain amount of time with one of those blocks with 2 portals on it and a hammer to destroy as much as you can. Last castle standing wins. Also, put the 2 portals on either side of a block on a bearing and spin it while pushing it into things, that might be interesting!
Or, instead of a hammer, a catapult that launches the block with the 2 portals on it. The guys have to build both the castle as well as the "ammo" and the catapult.
Think of portals as nothing other than a door from one point to another, if the door-well frame I suppose comes flying at you, while you're standing still, you come out of the other side not moving as well. However if you were to say, bust through the door/run through the frame, you'd go flying out the other side. Same applies to the portal that comes at you in this case
@@j.hawkins8779 But since you yourself are not carrying momentum, what reason within the laws of physics would you have to go flying out the other side with zero momentum going in? GladOS said it perfectly: "Speedy thing goes in. Speedy thing comes out."
@@DaysofKnight it would violate relativity: *there is no "absolute frame of reference".* you dont have momentum compared to what? the portal? the ground? an outside observer? please watch minute physics' video on this exact discussion.
@@j.hawkins8779 Compared to yourself, and the world. The portal has momentum, not you. I feel like you're being aggressive for no reason on this, and trying to push something?? The momentum you carry equals zero because you yourself are not moving relative to the ground. The portal moving doesn't impart momentum onto you. Again "Speedy thing goes in. Though a good channel, it's not something you should refer to, to prove a point, or to prove fact. Yes, many of his videos are accurate, those on portals are not. Since again, Portals are not real. To me, what makes more sense, is that you wouldn't be shot out of the end Portal, just because the beginning Portal has it's own momentum. You can kind of test this in real life, to a degree. Cut a hole in something flat, then shove that flat thing into a ball. Does the ball come flying out of the other side? No, it wouldn't, because the ball itself has no initial momentum to carry it through, flying out the other side. Portal momentum wouldn't impart velocity or momentum onto the thing passing through it. The object passing through it, needs its own momentum to fly out the other side. You can't get something from nothing, in this case. Because by our basic understanding of a Portal, all it does is move something from Point A to Point B. It doesn't take Object 1 and add something to that object between Point A and Point B. Make sense now?
@@DaysofKnight im not trying to be aggressive, nor do i have any agenda, im just trying to say that it wouldn't make sense in the real world. sure, portals may just be theoretical, but that doesn't mean they don't follow relativity. if the portal doesn't shoot out a static object, that means that that objects frame of reference is the "correct" one, and thus absolute, which we know for a fact physically can't exist. i get what you're saying, and it would make sense in a video game, im just saying it couldn't happen in real life (and, lets be honest here, this is a scrap mechanic video, scrap mechanic isn't exactly a game known for realistic physics).
I think that momentum is not connected to the speed of the portal, but rather the speed of the object passing threw it. This is because a portal that moves simply changes in distance from the other portal, and if the object isn't moving there will be no momentum to to transfer.
Scrapman, I’m sure you are aware, but just in case you aren’t, Teardown has a new expansion that, I’m sure I speak for a lot of your audience when I say, we’d love to see you play it.
Physicists on Earth: how the hell do we gather enough negative energy and antimatter to satisfy the energy requirements to sustain a portal. Scrapman: what are you talking about even? Just put it on a block... Put it on wheels and drive on them.
I think it would be like 2 cars driving at 60mph and hitting head on. They do not hit at 120mph of force but only at 60mph (thank you Mythbusters). So since you are not moving when the portal hits you, you have no momentum to transfer.
5:16 ScrapMan: **move the portal placed 90 degree to block and it makes a long hole exactly 1 block wide** Well, that was a surprising result Me: **looking at regular saw blade** I know how to upgrade you! **evil laungh** 12:06 you're wrong. the mod portal works exactly as it would work in reality. portal is not "this part of reality moving towards me", its a curved space, curved enough to connect 2 places, if it moves towards you, it means the place behind portal become closer to you. its like open door. lets say you stand in the room with some wall with the door in the middle, the wall moves with door on it, it can simply pass you and you still stand on the same spot, but you're now behind the wall. that's exactly how the portal would work in realy.
on a similar note, I think the portals on the ground don't work because the character hits the floor at the same time as entering the portal, they would probably conserve momentum if you didn't hit the ground before entering them. Probably because their collision is really flat and you hit the ground as you enter (or clip through the ground) which is shown in the top + bottom portal loop as the player enters the landing animation every time they loop through the portals. The bots also took damage when they went through the ground portals at high speeds, because they hit the ground at high speed and thus lost all their speed. i would put this in a regular comment, but youtube doesn't let me post comments for some reason.
That floor-eating car looks like it would be awesome for multiplayer spleef. Make the floor a couple layers deep so you can have fun getting stuck, but people can also cut out chunks and fall through. Or, just make it solid all the way down and play it as the last person able to move wins.
12:00 no the portal has a high velocity relative to you but you have a low velocity relative to it so all it’s like is if you were standing still and had a door thrown at you, the portal will retain momentum not the person
As a note, you wouldn't retain momentum if a portal ran through you. The portal is moving, you are not. It'd be more akin to a Doctor Strange portal where your environment changes around you (or disappears from around you in the case of getting dropped in the sky) but you wouldn't maintain any momentum, at least in a vacuum. Now here's the interesting question. If you place a portal on one gravitational body, and put its exit on another, they both are moving differently relative to each other. What would happen to the momentum you had when walking through? It'd be the coriolis effect, on steroids. Possibly.
In the real world, I believe most scientists would agree a theoretical portal/wormhole would "spit" you out with speed if one of the portals was pushed into you with speed. Because you moving quickly through a portal is just a different frame of reference of the portal moving quickly into you.
Guys, you don’t have to have discussions about relativity because scrap mechanic portals don’t preserve momentum reliably. That’s a video game thing, not a real-life science thing. You probably hit the surface the portal is attached to and then get teleported through, meaning you have no momentum since you hit the wall.
