I learned to knit when I was about five years old by watching a lady sitting facing me who was knitting. As a result, I could only knit jersey stitch because I knitted back and forth, never turning the work. When I was about 12yo, my mother asked me why I was knitting left-handed and I thought that was silly because you use both hands.... anyway, the result of knitting back and forth always in knit stitch - to the right and then to the left - is a jersey stitch that slightly zigzags. The knitted stitches are not completely straight up. I have never liked purling which my mother said I needed to do to make the end result straight, but now I knit and purl Norwegian style and love it. Thanks Arne and Carlos for your fun, entertaining and useful videos.
The Cast on as you say is wrong is how my mum taught me way back in the 50's and have cast on that way my entire life,(I'm 73). Use other way but fast is seeing the "nameless cast -on"!! Love the videos!
Oh, it's so nice to watch the snow fall behind you while learning this cast-on. I live in Westchester, NY, where we usually have heaps of snow. Last year and this year, so far, there isn't much. I enjoy a lovely snowy day, inside with a hot drink, a cozy blanket, and my knitting. Next time, please invite me over... lol!!!
I loved watching it snow outside your window as I watched it snow outside my window. Thank you for the new cast on. Looking forward to trying it. Please pet Freya for me
I’m so glad I watched this video! I’m a novice knitter and am just learning the long tail cast on. I thought I was doing it wrong because I’d let go of the tail to snug the stitch on my needle. It’s reassuring to see someone so skilled as Carlos doing the same thing! I’ve been practicing… my Mom used to say “Do it a thousand times and you’ll learn how”… and it’s getting easier to do it without letting go. Still… I’ve stopped feeling badly when I need to sort out my stitches or my tension. Thank you so much!
I have tried your cast on. 50 times. Haha. Still can’t get it. But on a positive note - there is nothing better than “SNOW AND CROCHET or KNIT” and I CAN SEE SNOW IN THE BACKGROUND AND THAT MAKES ME HAPPY 💗💗💗
My brain blew up. I have such trouble doing knit/perl for beginnings that I have given up doing that. I think this syndrome is called "old". Love you two!
Can you imagine trying to capture this complex sequence of movements in print? Thank goodness for RUclips, that's all I can say. 😁 I'm going to give this a try next time I need to cast on for ribbing! Thank you for the tutorial.
Thank you! I did it. 😊 Slowed the video down to half speed and recited “under, in, over, back out” and I got it! Many of the 2x2 cast-ons for ribbing are complicated and end up too tight. I’m glad to hear this one is looser!
🎉 Something new & a bit challenging! Thank you for slowing down Arne - your swiftness makes me envious. I will follow Carlos’ lead to “practice and I will get it.” Love the positivity! I now also want to play with the speed button to hear you as munchkins! 😂 ❤ You’re the best!
I have trouble with left and right generally, but I think knitting is helping with that. I still have to concentrate a lot but I'm getting better. I still get in a tizzy when I'm under stress but if I remember to slow down it gets better if I remember things from knitting . I think it helps me to visualise things if I have seen someone skilled ( like Arne ! ) demonstrate something. Thank you for slowing down. It really helps!
Watching Arne teach Carlos the new cast on remind me of the way I have to show people to cast on, I have to do it as I teach it! I’m not sure I got the purl way, I’ll have to practice that it looks fun!
Thanks for the new way to cast on! I’m going to give it a try! Looks like a good day for knitting there as we can watch the snow come down out your windows!❤
I leaned this as “casting on in pattern”. Recently I learned how to cast on German twisted in pattern. That one has a more pronounced braided edge but still shows the wavy character of the rib.
I have enjoyed this video. It was relaxing for me even though there was a lot going on. I wasn't concerned about learning the new longtail cast-on, so I didn't have to concentrate. I have been using the traditional longtail cast-on for so long that I have muscle memory for it now. I knew if I tried to learn Arne's new way for it that I might lose that memory (or get it out of its mind tray 🥴), so I just watched the knitting casually. But as always, so nice to spend this time with Arne and Carlos. 🤗 🤍 💟
Thank you! I don't love the regular cast on when knitting rib, but with this method (after some practice) I believe my ribs on socks will look much better!
I’ve been practicing Norwegian pearl as my hands nowadays are not what they used to. It’s been almost a year now and By George, I think I’ve got it! It’s beautiful. I’m not in pain anymore. So glad I stumbled into your channel.❤ I’m not a to tight, to loose knitter and the Norwegian pearl didn’t change that, can you believe it! I gave this cast on a try and yes, it’s easy and very curvy 👍
Thank you! Loved this tutorial. I remember that I'd tried one where I had to move my finger up and down, but couldn't get it right. This method seems to me much more logical with the Norwegian purl. I will try it. 💗 You are amazing!!
This is a marvelous tutorial! Thank you so much! I’ve never entirely mastered Norwegian purling, but now I think I can easily learn both. It’s always a joy watching you two work together.
At first, it looked complicated but after a few replays, the penny dropped and I can see how useful it could be. 🤗I’m in the middle of knitting the woman's cardi from your Greatest Knits book so will have a go at the new cast on when that’s completed. I also loved the added bonus of seeing the snow gently falling outside your window! What a lovely place to live! ☃💖xx
It took a few tries and it was a slow start but I got it! I love learning new things. I also wanted to mention I love the cozy knitting corner and watching the snow. We have some falling here in Colorado too! Love to you both, Valerie
here I am - only 1:47 minutes into the lesson and already I have to stop for a good laugh! I watch with the subtitles below (cc) turned "ON" and sometimes the words shown there don't match what is actually spoken. Here is one of the funniest examples I have seen: When Carlos talks about his "mantra" the subtitles below show the phrase "mind tray". I realize I too, have a "mind tray" - though it is not my "mantra" - I will probably never think of the "mantra" again without getting a laugh. My "mind tray" is overflowing but I keep squeezing more in - and you guys sure do help with that! Love the channel, thank you so much! ----- P.S. "cc" translates the Arne and Carlos club to the "Arden College Club" - which I do find amusing but not as funny as The New Term: "mind tray". Well, I have finished watching this and I will be back with needles and yarn in hand to follow along and actually practice this lesson in knitting. Thanks, again.
I had to go back and forth several times, plus reduce the speed in the settings, but I got it. It is the purl stitch done the Norwegian way. I noticed I needed to add a step where I went under the yarn before pulling through, otherwise I made 2 stitches like a YO. That's a really great cast on for every time I do a rib stitch. Thanks for this tutorial!
I have never mastered long tail cast on or Norwegian knitting, so start at a disadvantage. I do A LOT OF "no sew" knitting of jerseys for all sizes starting at the neck and working down to the bottom - marvellous for yoke colour work. I am going slow-mo this video and use a mirror because on top of everything else I am left-handed. You have no idea what fun that is when following a multi-colour pattern!!!
This is so great and I will try it when casting on my next hat. I just finished making the Annemor hat pattern and it is amazing and I will be making one for my Mother in law as she loved it too. It took me a few tries but watching you do it at the end of the video was really helpful and I only had to go back a few times to finally get it but I will need to practice some more before getting faster at it. Thank you for this new cast on method to try.
Mind blown!!! 🤯 I just had to start a new hat with this cast on!! Loving it guys. You saved my knitting life with the Norwegian Purl. My hands are now pain free because of it. I can't thanks you enough for sharing your knowledge with us. Tears of gratitude!!
You guys! I came back to revisit your instructions after practicing for ages and… I think I’ve got it! YAY!!! Thanks so much for this and all your other videos. Love you guys!
Thanks guys! I have converted to doing most of my current projects in Norwegian knit and purl. I am getting better at it, as I find it a wonderful way to work without switching from front to back with the lead thread. I am actually left handed and knit right handed in throwing on right... Switching up to colourwork forced me to try knitting with the lead thread on the left, but I couldn't get comfortable with the. Continental /english combo. Norwegian style feels alot nicer, even if i still need to work on when to switch the colours on the left to switch thr floats at thr back. This is definitely one I will attempt on my next rib start. Thanks ❤️🧶
Very cool. Looking forward to learning this technique. Ps- recently met a woman whose grandparent or was great grandparents who previously lived in your home!!
It's snowing! Wish we'd get that in TN. The cast on looks complicated to start, but I already know Norwegian Purl, so it would just take some practice. Love the look of the cast on! Thanks for sharing!
Long tail Cast on causes one of the strands to unwind but if it is done as Carlos does it the yarn does not untwist. I always do a knitted cast on rather than fuss with long tail.

Thanks. I've seen similar on other channels and figured it was a bot.
Thanks for warning me! I got this mail and I did not answer.😘
Thanks for the warning. I just deleted one of those fake posts. earlier today. It is such a mean thing to do to people
Thanks so much for all that you do to keep this a fun and enjoyable channel! ❤️
How do I contact RUclips to report these things?

Thank you a million times for showing us really slow at the end of this video. Hallelujah!!
I loved watching it snow outside your window as I watched it snow outside my window. Thank you for the new cast on. Looking forward to trying it. Please pet Freya for me
What a good idea. No more tight cast on edge
I’m so glad I watched this video! I’m a novice knitter and am just learning the long tail cast on. I thought I was doing it wrong because I’d let go of the tail to snug the stitch on my needle. Love watching you two..As an English style knitter of over 50yrs I want to try to knit Norwegian style from you two as well as Arné's rib casting on.
Thank you for watching, and have fun trying the Norwegian style of knitting.
Love seeing the snow falling out the window!
I like the end result. I was taught long tail cast on entirely different. I guess whatever works. Good job showing the new technique
❤ the sweater Carlos is wearing!
I could hug you both! This will work perfectly with my favourite thick sock pattern!
Under in over and out Norwegian cast-on! Love it
Once I’m brave enough, I WILL try this! Thanks for keeping me learning new things.
Thank you! I did it. 😊 Slowed the video down to half speed and recited “under, in, over, back out” and I got it! Many of the 2x2 cast-ons for ribbing are complicated and end up too tight. I’m glad to hear this one is looser!
Wow, a challenge but good to try a new cast on. You are both so good to watch, and Arne you dont realise how good your English is 🙂
🎉 Something new & a bit challenging! Thank you for slowing down Arne - your swiftness makes me envious. I will follow Carlos’ lead to “practice and I will get it.” Love the positivity! I now also want to play with the speed button to hear you as munchkins! 😂
❤ You’re the best!
Brilliant! It should be called Arne's Longtail Rib Cast On 💜 Thank you
Always learn something new from you guys at my old age. I got this , not so hard. Save your video as my memory is getting old like me.❤😊
So beautiful with the snow falling behind you 🤗
Thank you for sharing! I enjoy learning new techniques. ❤️
Soothing scenery out your window ❤
This was new for me, and now I have learned two different cast on this month. I will never be to old to learn new tecnics.
I have trouble with left and right generally, but I think knitting is helping with that. I still have to concentrate a lot but I'm getting better. I still get in a tizzy when I'm under stress but if I remember to slow down it gets better if I remember things from knitting . So glad that you showed the effect of the new cast on. Also, I love seeing the snow falling in the background.
Interesting alternative! Thank you for showing it to us!
Thanks for showing the ‘Norwegian rib cast on’ it makes so much more sense . I definitely will use it in my next project
I usually use the German twisted cast on but I'll definitely be giving this a try. Thank you both for showing us this cast on
Thank you for this! The result looks great. It's good to have more options for cast on.
Yet another arrow for our quiver! Thank you!
Wonderful tutorial! Can’t wait to try this. Thank you. ❤🧶
Watching Arne teach Carlos the new cast on remind me of the way I have to show people to cast on, I have to do it as I teach it! I’m not sure I got the purl way, I’ll have to practice that it looks fun!
Oh my gosh this is amazing. I got it! I'm casting on a hat right now so I can implant this technique. Thank you so much!
As always..fun watching you do creative things. Arne certainly can knit fast!
What a great strategy. I like how it looks. Will try it right now! Thanks for teaching this. 😊
I really like this cast on! It makes a lovely edge for ribbing. This is going to take some practice for sure!! 😃👍🏻🧶
I found the demonstration very clear. I need to practice to be able to do it without thinking too much, but I like the method very well. Thank you!
Makes a lot of sense. I will give this a try in the future. Thanks, A and C!
❤ watching you guys teach each other

Thanks for sharing your skills Arne. It looks a bit tricky but I’ll practice, just like Carlos, and get the hang of it. Love you both too 😊xxx
Amazing! It works for both 2x2 and 1x1 ribbing. Yes,
Arne and Carlos long tail cast on. I did it right now.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Thank you! I don't love the regular cast on when knitting rib, but with this method (after some practice) I believe my ribs on socks will look much better!

Like fun to learn. Always thankful when you share these new tips and tricks.
Wow! I cast on much simpler with one needle and finger with long piece yarn! Then second needle start one plan and one pearl! Thank you as always! Xx
This is awesome! Thanks guys for another great tip!!
Wonderful way to cast on for ribbing. It’s better than the normal long tail cast on. I can see the difference.
Thank you very much!
Love watching and learning from you both!! It's the A+C Cast On!!
Interesting . Thanks for doing this slow I'll be practicing this tonight . Thank you both .
I just noticed how hard it's snowing outside your window! 🦘🦘🦘🦘🦘
Wow, does this cast-on look cool! I’m adding this to my knitting goals for 2023, along with learning the Norwegian purl, and entrelac! ❤
This is a marvelous tutorial! Thank you so much! I’ve never entirely mastered Norwegian purling, but now I think I can easily learn both. It’s always a joy watching you two work together.

What a fun cast on! Thanks for sharing!
Hmm, I'm still in the "waltz" stage of knitting, but will give it a go ! 😊 Thanks for some good techniques. Always something to learn.
Just rewatching to get the knit&purl cast on. I forgot it, thanks for reminding me.
Awesome option. thank you!and thanks for the last repeat at the end. Think I got it.
I was so excited to see that you guys posted a new video.. Love from Missouri USA 🇺🇸
I was planning to start a new sweater today anyway, going to try this.
You guys! I came back to revisit your instructions after practicing for ages and… I think I’ve got it! YAY!!! Thanks so much for this and all your other videos. Love you guys!

Love you two, enjoy your day
Great job, looks like a great cast-on. Will be trying it on my next project.
It was under and over my knitting ability but still a very enjoyable technique to watch. :)
Thank you ! I’m going to try the Norwegian cast on .😊
Very cool. Looking forward to learning this technique. Ps- recently met a woman whose grandparent or was great grandparents who previously lived in your home!!
Still learning how to knit and crochet.. love your show
Thank you!
It's snowing! Wish we'd get that in TN. The cast on looks complicated to start, but I already know Norwegian Purl, so it would just take some practice. Love the look of the cast on! Thanks for sharing!
I usually do the German twisted cast on which is similar so looking forward to trying that one
Just perfect for the mittens I'm starting today! Thank you and Happy New Year!
GOT IT! Its actually easier if you do it fast..thanks again!🥰,Sharon.
Long tail
Cast on causes one of the strands to unwind but if it is done as Carlos does it the yarn does not untwist. I always do a knitted cast on rather than fuss with long tail.
I like it! It will definitely come in handy.
Love this, it’s like reverse order German cast on. Gotta try it!
Oh you guys are geniuses complete geniuses you are. Thank you so much. Love you both.
You are welcome! We are glad you liked it.
Oh! Call it the Norwegian Ribbed Cast On. Love it!
Thanks for an interesting cast on. Am sure I’m going to have to practice whole watching until I get it!
Great video, I will be trying this today
I got it! And it's beautiful, it works great. Thank you for helping me learn a new skill! I will definitely be using this one.
i love the cast on ,i will try it ,thanks for it
