You show discretion if it's something like jeans that affects nothing and when sitting is not even obvious (not like Magnus is wearing a ripped t-shirt). We're not talking about letting Magnus skip security checks, giving Magnus bonus time, etc. that affects other players. We're talking about stupid jeans that means nothing when you're seated and FIDE failed to use discretion and basically went all out on Magnus even after Magnus said he'd fix it tomorrow. They wanted it today and if not they would go all out for "jeans" against their reigning champ... Not just a fine, but basically banning a game over jeans for a game where players are seated... It's in fact the opposite of discretion. I'd even say FIDE wanted to give Magnus a "lesson" (and yet Hans conspiracy theorists think Magnus planned it).
Magnus is right, and Hikaru too - they think about the future. Fide thinks about to maintain their status. We are all fans of the beautiful game and everything evolves - time will tell and in the long run, the best idea wins.
Say what you will about Hikaru, but the dude has backbone. He’s probably Magnus’ number one rival but he constantly stands up for the guy because he knows Magnus has as much integrity as anyone that’s ever played the game and he’s the best player in the world. If the rest of the top players were more like Hikaru, professional chess would thrive.
I respect Hikaru so much for being one of the only top GM's I've heard to state so clearly how things fit together and what he means! That's what I really need others to dare to follow - regardless of which side they may be on.
I think the players should be given the freedom to dress how they choose. Dress codes have been around a long time and obviously the younger generation is more expressive and don't want to be put in a box.
Why not do like F1, where there's a drivers meeting to discuss the track specific rules and any issues Prior to the weekend starting? No union needed, just a big room for voices to be heard, and a uniform understanding of how rules will be interpreted in this specific tournament.
There was a technical meeting on December 21st. And the rules were explained there. Not sure if Magnus attended it, I don't understand why he would not make someone from his team attend that meeting.
Many years ago the blitz world championship was held in Israel. I went to watch it. I remember Grischuk (who won to become the world champion) waled in with torn jeans and a very old heavy metal shirt that literally had holes in it. Everyone thought it was great, that he's a bad a$$ and frankly no one even remotely cared that he's not wearing a suit. Everyone loved his style.
I think priority wise, best potential over the board vs outside the game. I get throwing a fit but pushing the best out over something speaks to the kind of world they're shaping for the future
Comeon on FIDE, you should allow them to wear fringed waistcoats, wide brimmed hats, thick leather belts, neckerchiefs, and cowboy boots too besides just blue jeans!
The only right answer here is solidarity! All remaining players in the tournament should come together and wear jeans to their next games. They can’t disqualify everyone!
Maybe if hikaru spent less time kneeling down and noshing off magnus for being a petulant child, he wouldn't have got absolutely brutalised by 2500 players.
The variation in volume is a bit distracting. Not a sound guy, but it seems the volume gets reduced a fraction of a second after someone starts speaking. Otherwise nice to see these interviews.
lots of haters saying events would still be sponsored even if magnus is not on it. yeah maybe once, but when it's not more profitable coz chess god is not playing then there will be no next time sponsorship. it's like watching a laker game in 2010 knowing kobe getting kicked out and no chance of coming back. you'll see lots of vacant sits 🤣🤣
They could have called a vote. The announcer gets on the PA and says, "All in favor of Mr Carlsen continuing, say Aye! --- All in favor of Mr Carlsen changing his pants, say Aye!"
FIDE is not at fault, they enforced their tournament rules after an appropriate warning, period. FIDE secured Google for the WCC without Carlsen, so sponsorship was no issue. Even when Kasparov broke away with the PCA he also had issues securing sponsors for the PCA WCC and the whole cycle revolved around Kasparovs ego, so naturally it became chaotic and eventually fell apart. Hikaru is again calling for the same thing with his "players union" and as he has no stake in classical chess anymore, he is free to fan this sort of discussion for his own benefit (again add ego) without any repercussions for himself.
@@Vivungisport FIDE interests?! It is a tournament rule, that is all. I have played in chess tournaments, if you do not follow the rules, you are forfeit, simple.
FIDE’s decision to not pair Magnus Carlsen over wearing jeans is absurd and feels targeted. This isn’t just about a dress code - it seems like FIDE is punishing Magnus for pushing new ideas like Freestyle Chess. The timing feels intentional. Top players need to come together to challenge FIDE’s outdated rules and approach. Without the best players, FIDE is nothing. Chess needs to evolve, and sticking to rigid, old-fashioned systems will only hold the game back. It’s time for players and fans to unite and demand a fairer, modernized chess world.
I don't understand why they have to dress so professionally to play a board game, we're not in the early 1900's, Chess is not just for the ultra sophisticated anymore.
He was warned multiple times before having action taken against him, so in that sense he was trying to provoke something himself... Blame rests with both Magnus and FIDE
At least Hikaru is making sense. :) Business Casual in 2024 is not the same as Business Casual in 1970... There's 0 reason for chess to stay a stuckup sport when it could be so magnificent.
Rules need a purpose. Rules arent meant to sacrifice the quality of life but defend it. . Magnus was defending champion and being removed for a technicality like jeans that dont inhibit the performance or concentration of other players? Brings into question the quality of fide in general.
As Hikaru says and Hans put it so eloquently , the jeans were just a pretext for Magnus , Hikaru and co to launch an all-out war against FIDE . This is more about the problems with freestyle chess .
while fide definitely needs some work and they definitely need to step up their game, this is obviously just a try from magnus and friends so that they can take over the "ownership" of the game. Which basically means that chesscom, magnus, saudi investors would own the game. Which is definitely not the answer for fide's incompetency.
The spirit of the game, conflict, naturally spills off and beyond the board. It's not about rules but about character, the dynamics inherent in the play of the game and in the lives of the players. And just as the game has players with different degrees of power, the ability to make different moves and take different positions, the same dynamic is manifested off the board. The players are not equal in strength or value within the chess community. You are not hearing interviews of the lesser valued players. They're not given a voice because they only perform a supporting role. We are seeing a tactical, strategic, and timely move for control by the powerful players (pieces) in the game. Why now? With greater amounts of money at stake, more than ever before in the history of chess, there will be increased conflict, greater risk taken, and greater losses suffered. No surprises here.
How boring is the current state of chess that the drama involves dress codes. If it wasn't for these online influencers, chess would be dying a quiet death.
Hikaru is wrong: NBA players do follow a dress code, they wear the team basket attire, they are not allowed to play in jeans or flip-flops. The NBA public does not have a dress code, as Hikaru says, and the public in this event didn't have any. Many professionals have a dress code, I do not see flight hostesses going to work in jeans and sweat pants. It is not a matter of modernity. It is to know what clothes are made for, and it is not for fashion. Magnus was wearing chinos some days ago in Singapore... this is not a problem about jeans.
The problem with FIDE is they clearly OVERREACTED and trying to prove a point, aside from wanting to impose the rules. They could've just increased the fine if Magnus wouldn't change before the next round, NOT threaten that he won't be paired. It doesn't even matter if Magnus was doing great or not, you can't just threaten a player to have to forfeit a point based on wearing jeans, it's not like he was disrespecting the event... It's jeans ffs and his outfit as a whole was more than respectul. And then they're like we're not DQ you from the tournament, just forfeiting a point on your behalf.. Really? And you expect me to continue playing? Dress code should not have anything to do with points players work for ON THE BOARD. Fine him? Sure. But chess is played on the board, not with your outfit.
didn't overreact at all, they simply enforced their rule. Magnus overreacted trying to make a big deal over a simple and easy rule that he agreed to prior to the event.
@@Vivungisport it's in the ruleset, simple. Notice how every other player managed to follow the rules. Magnus tried to make a big deal out of it because he was playing like shit and wanted a way out just like Sinquefield cup
It's crazy to imagine how threat you are if you do not play in world championship event. Magnus is that relevant in the scene and it shows how big his impact to FIDE if FIDE didnt do anything about it to convince magnus to play. No more sponsorship lol and world championship is meaningless
I don't care what they are wearing, I'm busy trying to understand the best players in the world and what they are doing in the moment. Let them wear jeans or a sweatshirt, I wanna watch the chess speak for itself!
About sponsors and audience I think we want really good chess and personalities. The players can preferably be odd, strange or whatever, just not boring dolls.
Yes but you see, fide has been doing absolutely nothing for chess in 50 years, all they do is take money from sponsors and put it in their pocket. They do not have a single penny to create any tournament. All the tournament they organize are sponsored and sponsors are there because of magnus. They are useless
@@golendorfjules1838point taken about fide, but not having been involved in the discussions, yet knowing how corporate advertising works vis a vis sponsorship, I’m skeptical of claims that arrangements were dependent on the presence of a single individual. The goals of partnerships are complicated and can be completely unaligned with public expectations.
With the history of this conflict going all the way back to Bobby Fischer over freestyle chess/fischer random - I think it's pretty clear who is at fault here. Magnus did what he had to do. FIDE is trying to monopolize chess and prevent positive change that would improve the players' pay and the popularity of the game. Bravo Hikaru for being real. Thank you Levy for not being a shill for FIDE.

This was a confrontation that was bound to happen since Magnus wants to start his own empire. He doesnt want to put in the hard work anymore. Doubt that India, China, Russia will go with him.
They are underestimating Indias manifold interest in the game especially after Gukesh win. The next decade is bright for FIDE. Fischy Random is great for playerd but it will struggle to get viewers since it is even more harder to understand for audience.
They only thing that made sense from what he said is the idea of top players forming an unofficial union to discuss these aspects a priori with FIDE and the athletes commission. Everything else is just Magnus is perfect, FIDE is evil nonsense
Specifying how people should appear is tricky. Sikhs may insist on wearing their turban. Muslim women may only wear a chador. Men may wish to identify as women and dress accordingly. How would FIDE deal with Magnus were he to arrive at a board as a woman in a chador claiming that "she" was now dressed as her religion dictated?
Let the officials of FIDE have fun with themselves (according to their regulations) and head towards a new chess organization which is more rooted in today's reality

FIDE basically forced Magnus to quit.
Anyway, Magnus clearly said he was already at the last straw with FIDE's previous attempted threats, and this was the final trigger.
Ye this is what nerds fight over
Well said by Hikaru. Hope this becomes the dividing point in time where chess players can show up looking however they want.

I agree 💯👌 Fide needs Magnus for sponsors. Because Magnus are a larger brand than Fide

I respect Hikaru so much for being one of the only top GM's I've heard to state so clearly how things fit together and what he means! That's what I really need others to dare to follow - regardless of which side they may be on.
Salem Saleh wears the traditional dress for men in UAE “Kandoora”, and he wears it in FIDE events too.. their reasoning for the Jeans is ridiculous!
Crazy... I'm glad Magnus is keeping his ground ...we fans dont care what chess players are wearing. We respect them for their ability to play chess
Flip flops and a Speedo
I think the players should be given the freedom to dress how they choose. Dress codes have been around a long time and obviously the younger generation is more expressive and don't want to be put in a box.
Why not do like F1, where there's a drivers meeting to discuss the track specific rules and any issues Prior to the weekend starting? No union needed, just a big room for voices to be heard, and a uniform understanding of how rules will be interpreted in this specific tournament.
I was literally about to say that
There was a technical meeting on December 21st.
5:07 i dunno i feel like id watch more chess if magnus wore a speedo
Thanks Hikaru. Chess players CAN speak fluently (more than 1 sentence per minute). Carlsen‘s interview was longer, but much less content.
Comeon on FIDE, you should allow them to wear fringed waistcoats, wide brimmed hats, thick leather belts, neckerchiefs, and cowboy boots too besides just blue jeans!
Roundtable idea is really great Levy.. please try to make that happen ❤
The only right answer here is solidarity! All remaining players in the tournament should come together and wear jeans to their next games. They can’t disqualify everyone!
Someone's eating the best meal of their life while watching this interview live. 😂
Magnus is the Mike Tyson of chess 😂
No, he's the Muhamad Ali of Chess.
I agree with Hikaru completely.
1/3 the views of the hans interview that came after. things u love to see

The variation in volume is a bit distracting. Not a sound guy, but it seems the volume gets reduced a fraction of a second after someone starts speaking. Otherwise nice to see these interviews.
I hope Magnus and Hikaru will show up in jeans and pineapple shirt.
lots of haters saying events would still be sponsored even if magnus is not on it. yeah maybe once, but when it's not more profitable coz chess god is not playing then there will be no next time sponsorship. it's like watching a laker game in 2010 knowing kobe getting kicked out and no chance of coming back. you'll see lots of vacant sits 🤣🤣
They could have called a vote. The announcer gets on the PA and says, "All in favor of Mr Carlsen continuing, say Aye! --- All in favor of Mr Carlsen changing his pants, say Aye!"
The over-looked fact was that it wasn't about the jeans... it's because he wasn't wearing underwear...FREE WILLY!
The fact that you can say with certainty that he was wearing underwear probably did it.
hikaru when will you win a tournament for a change
he's too busy glazing magnus defending his pathetic behaviour, so he finished 45th
I want to see Magnus make his own league and then the Dress code is jeans.😂
We don't care if old Fide are right or wrong. U!! care bout Fide's interests,, not us.
@@Vivungisport FIDE interests?! It is a tournament rule, that is all. I have played in chess tournaments, if you do not follow the rules, you are forfeit, simple.
Team Hikaru - Magnus!
Levy’s eyes turned into dollar signs when Hikaru brought up Magnus showing up in a speedo. 5:00
I you called chess a sport, you can't imagine wearing jeans to football matches 😂😂😂.
Levy asking each interviewee about their pants😂😂😂
At least Hikaru is making sense. :)
Business Casual in 2024 is not the same as Business Casual in 1970...
Saudi Arabia is ready to invest in a new freestyle chess league with Esports style production
Bro causally touched Hikaru
As Hikaru says and Hans put it so eloquently , the jeans were just a pretext for Magnus , Hikaru and co to launch an all-out war against FIDE . This is more about the problems with freestyle chess .
Magnus threw a bone, and FIDO played fetch.
Hikaru is incredibly smart… in another life he could be a really successful diplomat or even lawyer
What's up with Hikaru's solo camera? It seems super fuzzy compared to the other cams.
while fide definitely needs some work and they definitely need to step up their game, this is obviously just a try from magnus and friends so that they can take over the "ownership" of the game. Which basically means that chesscom, magnus, saudi investors would own the game. Which is definitely not the answer for fide's incompetency.
Interesting point
GM Hikaru has something called "the spine", which allows him to stand upright.
Pity many other GMs can only crawl on the floor.

За что штрафовать??? Опомнитесь, чиновьё шахматное!
didn't overreact at all, they simply enforced their rule. Magnus overreacted trying to make a big deal over a simple and easy rule that he agreed to prior to the event.
THIS🫒👌💯
@gredax Taking a point off for wearing a fabric that the whole world using today...THAT'S NOT CHESS,,, WILD!!
@@Vivungisport it's in the ruleset, simple. Notice how every other player managed to follow the rules. Magnus tried to make a big deal out of it because he was playing like shit and wanted a way out just like Sinquefield cup
The arbiters jokingly wanted Magnus to change his genes so that the rest of the field has a chance at being just as gigachad but they miscommunicated.
Now for news from other players, let's talk with Hikaru.
Hikaru, what do you think of Magnus?
It's crazy to imagine how threat you are if you do not play in world championship event. Magnus is that relevant in the scene and it shows how big his impact to FIDE if FIDE didnt do anything about it to convince magnus to play. No more sponsorship lol and world championship is meaningless
Nakamura compared with basketball but in basket ball when they are playing they have to follow dress code 🤷♂️
I don't care what they are wearing, I'm busy trying to understand the best players in the world and what they are doing in the moment. Let them wear jeans or a sweatshirt, I wanna watch the chess speak for itself!
The brotherhood of the traveling pants👖
About sponsors and audience I think we want really good chess and personalities. The players can preferably be odd, strange or whatever, just not boring dolls.
FIDE should incorporate their own Fischer random and have open tournaments. Seems like that could smother the "freestyle" money making enterprise
For us mortal chess is hard but fun because you need brain to play, and when Magnus the best who love the game put his heart out then you need make sure your body can handle it.. No jeans can protect you either
and so SPEED-O chess was created
This was a confrontation that was bound to happen since Magnus wants to start his own empire. He doesnt want to put in the hard work anymore. Doubt that India, China, Russia will go with him.
Who cares bout what India China Russia wants? Its not like Chess player are forced to play for fide 😂
is it possible to form a new federation?
I sincerly hope so, Fide feels like a stiff bureaucracy org .
100 K congo @Take Take Take
They are underestimating Indias manifold interest in the game especially after Gukesh win. The next decade is bright for FIDE. Fischy Random is great for playerd but it will struggle to get viewers since it is even more harder to understand for audience.
Indias interest? Are India gonna sponsor Fide in the future...well? if you think its worth it.
Proves me right... there's essentially nothing deep about chess
Let the officials of FIDE have fun with themselves (according to their regulations) and head towards a new chess organization which is more rooted in today's reality
Rule is a Rule. GOAT or CHICKEN does not matter. But why the Stupid Jeans rule in the first place?
Does Jeans distract the play of the Opponent or give self an advantage?
