Both the Clinch EP and the Chase Tone Secret Pre are excellent-own both. The Clinch is both brighter and darker on it’s versions of the preamp than the Chase Tone-which has a 3rd preamp position. Both have excellent construction and road worthy. Clinch does offer some nice models with other features in addition to just the Preamps.
I have a Chase Tone Secret Preamp which does a similar thing and adds a touch of colour to my sound. I'm actually running it within my effects loop and I love it!
I thought it sounded great, and hard to beat the simplicity of it. Rick and Tele sounded really good to me, and your playing overall sounded really good. Cool, interesting chord progressions too!
The Effect that It had on the SG was incredible. Of all the EP3 preamp emulation i've Heard, this one Is the sweetest. The real question Is: where do i put an EP3 preamp pedal? I think my answer would be at the end of the chain to sweet things up. Before a delay to "give an ep3 character to any delay pedal" Is a nonsense to me.
Joe - quick question: what do you recommend as an always-on tone enhancer? An EP3 style like this or the ChaseTone, or a tube boost like the Effectrode Fire Bottle or Kingsley Page? If it helps I like rougher, gnarlier single coil sounds with a good amount of ring. Not interested in "smooth"! Thanks for everything as ever!
Great stuff, easy to hear why the circuit is a classic, and I didn't know there are two versions, nice. I have an "Ask Perky" question, if I may: Have you ever looked into bucket brigade reverb as a second alternative to the spring reverb? I just learned about the DOD FX45 and love the sound (but not the price they're going for). Thanks, Joe!:)
Thanks Kira :-) I haven't, but I _think_ Jim Hagerman is/has been working on one with the PT2399 chip in it, which (he says) is a "90% analog" component...so that might be worth looking at if you're interested in the DOD!
Fellow lefty! Loved that eg with the SG and JTM. Ooozed "rock"! Oh, please help me with my question in your video about pots. I'm having a devil of a time with these horrible pots that act like on/off switches lol! Cheers and subscribed!
Wonderful pedal, tone and playing Joe. Unsurprisingly, you seem to get a tremendous variety of tones out of your colossal collection of guitar memorabilia and oddities, but surely, it can’t all be about valves, capacitors and strings? Some still say that tone comes from the fingers, but what picks do you use these days? I’d be interested to hear what brand, shape, thickness, material etc etc? Also your thoughts on how differences in picks affects the tone? Maybe if the answer is too long-winded, you might consider a pick shoot out at some point? Cheers dude!
A huge amount of tone is in the fingers for sure - though I still maintain that my gear is far better than I am! :P I use standard Dunlop 0.73mm Tortex picks (the yellow ones) I've experimented with others but always come back to them - different picks do sound different, but not _massively_ so. A different pickup would make a _lot_ more difference, for example!
@@banditsharp Aha - I tried some of those Casein 'Fake Tortoiseshell" things and snapped about 4 of them on the first strum! Mine have gotta be flexible :P
I see you still have the Micro coils in the Tele. They sound great, and so do mine. At first I was impressed with the neck pickup, but now I think I need to take it down to 250K (currently it's at 500K), which is where I have the bridge pickup. I was less impressed with the bridge pickup initially, but lately I'm really loving it. It has such a beautiful presence. I would normally want a bit more midrange, but that bright edge is just so nice, I don't miss the mids.
I am planning on trying some 'traditional' Tele pickups in there soon (I've been on a _long_ waiting list!) but if I don't prefer them, the Micro Coils are going straight back in :-)
@@JoePerkinsMusic Yeah, I've been waiting for your new ones too. I'll be reassessing myself soon. I just got a new Tele and I'll put some traditional pickups in it for comparison's sake. I gotta say though, my Strat's not feeling terribly secure about keeping its pickups. It just sounds so dull next the Micro Coil Tele. (even with the treble boosted)
The switch on the top toggles between the V1 (earlier) and V2 (later) versions of the EP-3 preamp circuit - V1 is brighter, V2 is darker, so it is a _little bit_ like a bright switch. I had an Xotic a few years ago and didn't like it - it felt too dark and too compressed, even in the brighter mode. This one (to me) is a much more enjoyable playing experience, and I much prefer how it sounds - very dynamic and punchy. But from memory, the Xotic had quite a bit more extra level over the standard EP-3 circuit. 👍
Alternatively, Clinch makes a version that has a clean boost built in, so you can get the same effect as the Xotic if you need both the tone and the boost.
@@JoePerkinsMusic Hi, the Clinch website doesn't work. I wrote them on IG but I didn't receive any answer. Do you know how can I get in touch with them? Thanks and keep on working! I really enjoy your videos!
I love using this pedal as a Master Volume after all of my drive pedals. Definitely worth having.
Nice!!
Happy new Year 2024 Joe ! Your SG in the JTM with the EP-Pre sounds very nice !
Nice sounding pedal!
I could hear some Focus like tones at the 10th minute :) Great pedal and great playing!

This pedal is awesome. The PicoPre by Clinchfx is cool too. Well...they are the same pedal.

Personally, I run it pre-overdrives to boost into them for some extra fatness - but end of the board would work too! :-)

I talk a bit about this in the Q&A video coming at midnight :-) But I'd say the Page is probably exactly what you need!
Spaceman Atlas III is my recommendation. This can't hurt either.
What a beauty!!!
Time to check the bank balance again.
Mine hasn't forgiven me for Christmas yet....!!

How does it compare to the Crazy Tube Circuits Super Conductor version of the EP circuit?
Not sure, haven't put them side by side yet!
Joe, do you think the EP3 circuit works better with Marshall amps or it doesn't really matter?
Sounds great into everything, in my experience!
It is interesting. I would like to ask how much is it different from the Xotic Ep. Is the switch on the top a bright switch? Thanks!

I thought that would sound a lot better than it does, I think the best position that pedal has is when it’s turned off. That’s just my honest opinion.
Hey Joe 👋
Hey mate! ✌️
They should release a bass effects pedal called "the bottom" - clinch fx the bottom.
Hah! :P
You can’t even buy it lol
that has to be the ugliest pedals ever designed lol....sounds good though
