I graduate from California State University Chico with a degree in mechatronic engineering and have no regrets. My advice is if you're going to study mechatronic engineering is to take extra classes in either mechanical or electrical engineering so you can lean more towards one of the fields. I dove more into firmware development for microcontrollers and that skill alone has helped me get both of the jobs I've had.
That means if I have done a bachelor's degree mechanical then I should take extra electrical classes
How challenging is it to complete “electronic part” in the degree program?
Nice job! Really well presented, just recently learned about ABET accreditation in the US. Seems to me that there are a lot more accredited mechatronics programs in Canada.

I just got into the mechatronics engineering program at Waterloo in Canada. It’s CEAB credited which is the Canadian version of ABET do you think this is fine?
In the major universities in australia I believe it doesnt matter what branch of engineering you choose the base engineering degree is accedited

In the Kennesaw State Mechatronics engineering program, you'll learn C++ and python. Also, when you learn C++ you take the lecture side by side with students learning C# and Java, so there is good opportunity to self teach both of those as well.

@@JakeVoorhees so the man who kind of spearheaded the Mechatronics department at Kennsaw said this. "To me it was important that our program was ABET accredited; unaccredited programs already are fighting an up hill battle against accredited, and unfortunately Mechatronics is not a well known field yet. To try and get a job with a field that isn't well known, and with one that isn't accredited would be very difficult." Paraphrasing a bit.

So all those videos about mechatronics salary are wrong or deceiving. Because mechatronics is an associates degree, but does the salary come with a combination of degrees. Can someone explain this to me, please?

Just finished a 2 year certification program in Mechatronics. Loved the fabrication side of the program but did alot of PLC coding and found out I'm not a huge fan of it. What would be your recommendation?
YES!!!! This video is so much better. You got to the point faster, and best of all very little editing. A bit too much rambling on getting an ABET accredited degree, in my opinion. But these kinks will be worked out later. You hands are moving more, indicating more engagement while speaking, which I love. Good work.

I am a Mechatronics Engineer yet I am really into Computer Engineering, I did my research graduating thesis in Machine Learning using Python for example, I'm really hoping to get my masters in IT as well. I didn't really knew about the importance of ABET accreditation however I live in Honduras and we don't really have any accredited programs in here. Really interesting video, thanks.

Can you make a video on systems design engineering? It's intriguing to me because similarly to how in mathematics there's pure mathematics and applied mathematics, I think of systems design engineering as "pure engineering" in a way.

Industrial Engineering is a great field and it’s very different from most other engineering fields. Mechanical or electrical or civil engineering, and all the rest, will look at each individual part or component and optimize them one at a time in order to maximize the sum of the parts (or whatever the objective is, which may include reduce costs, reduce build-time, etc). Industrial engineering considered the entire system wide perspective, so it looks at the full top down umbrella view. Therefore, it considers more things like human factors, and the perspectives of people working a system (ex: manufacturing), along with other things that are not raw engineering elements. Due to this difference, there is less math. Another thing that I like about IE is that it is far more diverse, having 40% women vs the standard 13% across the board. I got graduated from mechanical department in 2021 and got an admit from suny buffalo for ms in robotics. It's core courses consists of machine learning, machine vision and etc. Do you think it's a good opportunity to pursue my masters in robotics from suny buffalo? Looking forward hearing from you
I think masters of robotics is fine, you just should do EE or CPE or ME for bachelors. And yes especially if they program focuses on machine learning, that is the #2 highest paying position for EEs today and MLE is the fastest growing job title in the world. I live in south Africa, and the one uni here has a mechatronics degree. I was shocked to see that the curriculum was literally 90% electrical and it had little notes of mechanical and software.
There was a non accredited program in the states I ran into where 90% of it was computer engineering (hardware) with very little mechanical.
Interesting that software is so omitted. I guess it’s mostly a circuits and device type program. What are you thinking about it? You going to do it? Cheers thanks !!

Hello thanks for your video. I come from Germany and we have around 135 different mechatronics courses (Bachelor and Master). Would you also recommend me to study electrical engineering or mechanical engineering or is it better in this case to study mechatronics (B.Eng) directly? Maybe I would like to work in the USA in the future (if possible), so I ask. I have also already completed vocational training in mechatronics and therefore have 5 years of practical work experience. Thanks :)

I want to be a mechatronics engineer and am still in high school, about 3 years left in my school life and ill become a university student, and i hope mechatronics becomes more accredited since i really want to major in it.
It likely will. Also 3 years is alot of time in todays world. Things change very fast. Either way, if you pick mechanical, electrical, or computer engineering you would still be fine.
Basically whichever engineering you choose just learn coding..!!

Mechanical Engineering vs Mechatronics Engineering is a good question. Mechanical Engineering is one of the big three, and honestly one of your core engineering options.

There are only three engineering fields that have over 300,000 engineers in the USA - mechanical / civil / electrical. In terms of choosing between those three. I If you like taking things apart and working with physical components like automobile engines or plane parts, even the thermal side of this, mechanical is for you. Programming is not a bad skillset in this, but it is avoidable, if you like. Aerospace engineering, biomedical engineering, manufacturing engineering, etc, can be done by first studying mechanical engineering.

Electrical is different and requires a little more challenging math because everything is theoretical. You cannot see electricity or magnetism, for example. Plus, you absolutely must be good at programming in order to be an electrical/electronics engineer. Electrical Engineers can work with power, telecommunications, signals and controls, electromagnetics and radiation, etc. Electronics is a major subset within Electrical and this deals with circuits, microelectronics, communication technology, signals, circuit design, automation and sensing, etc. This is the type of EE that can become a mechatronics engineer.
Computer engineers are basically EEs that work on the integration between electronics and the software controlling them.

Now, what is mechatronics engineering? This is actually the intersection between mechanical and electrical engineering with some computer engineering and computer science involved as well.

Mechatronics engineers mostly want to work within robotics - that is the direction of questions I receive the most.
Since there are not so many mechatronics degrees out there today, sometimes you have to manufacturing your own within your existing engineering major as a sort of “customize your own emphasis” type of degree. First, understand that mechatronics is basically a combination of Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering with some computer programming included (plenty of that in EE). Then, take tech elective courses and build relationships and do research in the direction of the other. I think EE has a stronger future than ME, so if you really like math and if you can program well, then EE is the way. Is Bachelor of Technology in Mechatronics in any major universities
TRONs is a good option in Canada, I think. TRONs is so very competitive program to get into, especially at the University of British Columbia and the University of Waterloo which are all good engineering schools. I knew that cause I'm a student at both uni :). We can learn how to code and design things at the same time. That is what I think about TRONs. Every engineering major has its own pros and cons. The important thing is that you love what you do!

Computer Science Engineering vs CS? That seems to be just what that school is offering in terms of a slightly more theoretical degree (CS) vs more applied to applications for integrating the CS into hardware and industry, so its probably pretty similar to Computer Engineering (CPE). And therefore, here is my view on this.

Now that you know more about computer engineering, you understand there are two main branches of CE - computer hardware engineering and computer software engineering. This response will focus on computer hardware engineering vs CS, as computer software engineering and CS are even closer and we're starting to split hairs.
Secondly, its important to understand that computer engineering is not its own branch of engineering. CE is a subset of electrical engineering. Electrical Engineers often times work as programmers and software engineers after university. So again, I am using this example to point out how closely aligned the career paths are.
The primary difference between the two is that computer scientists will exclusively work on the programming aspect of a problem or project. They will troubleshoot the programming, optimize, and truly be under the hood and behind the scenes regarding what the software intends to do.
Computer engineers on the other hand are also working with the programming, but focus on the integration between the physical components and the software.
Sometimes computer scientists find themselves in a software engineering role, which is a branch of CS. Software engineers design and create new software, whereas CS does not necessarily mean you will make new software. Computer engineers are the bridge between everything. Mechanical engineers design the physical components. Electrical engineers work with the power, communications, radios, and circuitry. Computer engineers handle the integration between any of these electronic parts and the code. And computer scientists work on the code only.

Great okay thanks for that suggestion. Here is my view at this time for you.
Assess your personality and skills. Do you see yourself leading or do you see yourself becoming a technical expert? Both are great and both are vital when you are a senior engineer. Some engineers take the management path where they are a team leader, eventually they can run a department, then maybe a region, and then maybe become a C-Suite (CTO, COO, CIO, CEO etc) executive. These people should do MBA. It's probably 5-10% of engineers who do this.
The rest or more of the stereotypical engineers where they will be a technical expert during their career. The MS will help them become even more of a masters, and it will give you an advantage later in your career when you are against another engineer for a technical role, or even in general in your work.

Hey I lived in Vancouver for 4 years so I know about SFU actually :) Yeah so here it says that the program is CEAB accredited so you can have access to the PEng, which is fine for Canada www.sfu.ca/students/calendar/2019/summer/faculties-research/faculty-applied-sciences/Accreditation.html eventually it will most likely gain ABET like other canadian engineering programs have within their civil, mechanical, electrical, etc programs. Yeah that’s about half of the industry. Thanks for the comment. There is still quite a bit of theoretical aspects within electronics. You have the programming which is all theory. You have the circuitry and the power. The signals and controls. The telecomm that could be involved. Magnets might be there. There’s still a lot of theoretical stuff even with the hands on side. Then you have EEs who will end up on the software engineering side and never touch an electronic by choice :)

Hey thanks for the comment and question. I get a lot of questions about robotics. It is probably the most requested niche topic within engineering right now.
Robotics is a subset of engineering that sits between mechanical and electrical engineering called, “Mechatronics Engineering”. It is exactly what it sounds like. Mechanics + Electronics. I have a video on this here, “What Do Mechatronics Engineers Do? ruclips.net/video/4YjLZcQRLds/видео.html
Right now as I type this in early 2021, there are only 28 programs for mechatronics engineering, vs 337 mechanical engineering programs and 315 electrical engineering programs. So it’s very common to advance towards mechatronics with a degree in either mechanical or electrical engineering.
It is possible with either approach, but I believe electrical engineering is a little better than mechanical engineering for the pursuit of this. If you lean towards ME, you should be more interested in the design of the parts and components within the robots.

I want to study Comp eng. I’m applying for a uni(Newcastle Uni) at the moment, and when looking at the offered programs. It seems that they only have what they call a “Electronics and computer engineering” and I’m not sure what that really is. Is it comp eng? A mix of electrical eng and computer eng? I’m not really sure. I looked at the module of classes and I’m a bit unfamiliar with some subjects.
May I ask you for advice as to wether to go ahead and apply for this program, or instead apply for the traditional electrical or mechanical engineering. As the the Uni also offer these programs.
Side note: I’m personally looking for a high paying degree, I really don’t care about the difficulty. As long as the job security is high and the pay is high I will be fine.

Hmm what a good question. I'll answer some of that now and probably make a video about it later.
Mechatronics is the intersection of mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering, along with computer science.
In terms of a computer science degree itself, it is highly possible to work in mechatronics for your career, but you will be destined to work exclusively on the code forever. You will not really be able to do tests or analysis of the machines, or anything like that. So you have to decide how much you really like programming vs how flexible you want to be.
You can see where this goes. If you have any uncertainty about programming, doing the more engineering route, the mechatronics route, is the way.
Even moreso, most mechatronics professionals get a degree in either ME/EE/CPE and if you are already considering Mechatronics vs CS, then you should probably do CPE.

About 80% of job opportunities go unadvertised. That’s right! So if you are simply applying to positions online, you are missing the lion’s share of jobs.

Examples of who to reach out to in order to do this properly are as follows. Maybe a professor in that niche that you have had in the past, or a leader or officer of an engineering club/society/organization in the field you are focusing on, or someone that your family knows or a family friend, or someone you met at a job fair or conference or event in that niche, etc. Join Engineers Without Borders to get experience and meet more people - there are local professional chapters you can join even if you are out of school. Go to hackathons and industry events to meet people and build more relationships and connections.

Anyone that you know - ask them for introductions to engineers or for informational interview opportunities if they are in the engineering realm you are trying to head now (“Informational Interview Tips“ ruclips.net/video/nxUtpzPHKjc/видео.html). After that, keep in touch, and then ask about opportunities. Even volunteer roles nowadays can be a good path to paid internships. But full time graduates will not be as interested in this.

They thanks for the comment. I think the first thing to consider for a mechatronics bachelors degree is can you find an in state or local accredited program for your country. Because if you cannot, I suggest doing EE or ME or CPE for bachelors. I would not worry about making choices for your masters before you are nearly done bachelors. Any engineering degree can get you into any engineering masters. But making the right decision can only be done if you have all the knowledge and experiences you will have after or nearly after university. Does that make sense?

When I was picking a major I wanted to pursue I decided to go with Computer Engineering because I love to do coding and I love to build things like circuit boards, computers, etc. But after watching this video I realized this was what I always wanted to do. Hey thanks for the follow up. The way to know between the two is do you like programming / coding and do you want a future with it being involved with your career? Structural engineering has nearly zero coding while Electrical can have a lot. In order to be a successful EE, you must be a good programmer.

It really depends on you, the accreditation, and so much more. If you are not super passionate about it, I would recommend one of the bigger engineering types and just focus on the robotics side of things.

According to Wikipedia, ABET mostly accredits programs for the United States, however, they also accredit programs internationally. If you're planning on being an engineer in Australia, I would find out what the ABET equivalent of Australia is and see if your program of study is accredited by them.

Hey Jake! I’m really struggling in choosing between EE and Mechatronics for Bachelor, in one moment I’m certain about EE but then think again if I wouldn’t be better on mechatronics. The problem is the EE major at my university has only two specialisations, Automation is the first one and Power Engineering the second one. The thing I’m worrying about is when I chose EE than I would totally miss the Mechanical part, CAD design and so on. And I couldn’t really do the masters in mechatronics if I chose EE and on the opposite I couldn’t really do masters in EE if I chose mechatronics... But I’ve never done it before, it seems exciting but I can’t know it right now if I would fall in love in mechanics.. I’ve always loved the robots, drones, electronics, 3D printing, these Arduino kits with sensors.. the programming is also not that bad but I think I like the design part a bit more. I’m doing Computer Engineering right now but all of this CPUs architecture and Networking isn’t for me, therefore I’m thinking of a change. I had basic Electrical engineering course in the last semester and really enjoyed it.
I fear I will end up as a power engineer or PLC programmer if I choose EE which has nothing to do really with electronics or robots. Could you maybe give me some kind of advice? Hey Jan thanks so much for this nice comment. I think the way to become the most successful type of mechatronics engineer is through EE right now. Do automation. You will always have an opportunity to go from EE into ME type of roles or graduate school. How is your programming skill / interest? That is how you really know. If you are okay at programming, it would be a waste to do ME rather than EE. And this is normal that you cannot purely do mechatronics. That's what I was saying in this video. MTREs is mostly a path not a degree.
Do not go power. That is an entirely different track vs mechatronics in general. Does all this help and make sense? I love Germany, i was in Berlin and Frankfurt and Munich and loved them in 2018. @@JakeVoorhees thanks for answer. So the problem ist there isn’t any single ME elective in the EE course at the university I’m looking at. It’s all about power and energy engineering and automation. That’s what Is worrying me, if I chose EE. On the other hand the Mechatronics course at the university is a bit mechanical heavy with ME subjects at about 50%, EE subjects at around 30% and programming subjects at around 20%... so you really think choosing EE would be better for me and I wouldn’t be happy with Mechatronics Engineering?
Hmm interesting, yeah I understand this is a tough situation. Does the school have computer engineering? Maybe that would have some hardware options as CPE is just a subset of EE anyways.
What you should check is that if the school's mechatronics program is accredited by the German authority on this - the ENAEE. If so, the mechatronics program will be fine. Most engineering is design engineering in some way, so it's actually baked into almost every role. When you get into software and chemistry and things that are nearly 100% theory, it changes. But if there is any physical element at all, there is design.

I should have stated this more often in the “Mechanical Engineering Job Tier List” video. For example, mechatronics engineers will be working on some new design, or modifying some existing design of a mechatronic system. Power engineers will be designing a power station or system. Instrumentation engineers, designing parts to the instrumentation sector. Automotive engineers will design engine parts, etc.
Engineers are mostly designing, or testing a design, or analyzing those tests, optimizing a design, observing the design in the field, writing a document or report about the design, presenting the finding on the design, etc. Everything is design, generally.

Applied Math Major here, trying to switch into engineering. Are there other possible paths to work as a mechanical engineer if someone has a b.s. in math or a physical science?
Hey thanks for another good comment. It's so hard to get a career going with a math or physical science or physics or biology or chemistry degree no matter what. Sure people do it. They just are not as employable vs engineering. It is very common for math majors to go to grad school in engineering, usually something like electrical engineering actually.
Your ticket into whatever you want is probably date science. You can end up there without a MS but a lot of people do end up going into data science via an MS and then they go into machine learning after that. I think thats your ticket. How does that sound to you? Thanks!
I would suggest an M.S. in information systems, engineering technology, or computer science.

@@JakeVoorhees Yes, I have a B.S. in math and computer science. I later earned an MBA, and an EdS in industrial education with about 24 graduate hours in Engineering Technology. I am currently completing an EdD and I want to work on an MS in manufacturing engineering technology after that. You might mention engineering technology on one of your videos, I like engineering technology because the work is more application and less theory. I have watched several of your videos and you are doing a great service. Thanks a lot for helping the engineering profession.

Hey thanks for the comment. It depends on if the program is accredited in your country or not. The USA uses the ABET accreditation system and there are just 3 ABET accredited mechatronics programs in the country :)

Mechatronics engineering is the future. I think it’s a great choice. Thanks for the comment. I think if you can, lean as much as possible into the computer science side of things during your computer engineering journey k? Especially machine learning. It’s the absolute best career path for EE and CPE majors.

I am currently a junior student majoring in Electrical engineering at western Michigan university. What courses or programs are there to step up my chances to becoming a mechatronics engineer/ ml engineer
Take as much ML type programming courses as you can. Robotics and computer vision and anything that is related to self driving cars, so I know that is a big industry in Michigan. Try to get internships in ML or companies that higher MLEs, build relationships with professors who have connections to the industry, do research in that realm, or teach classes related to it. Seriously, build relationships with those professors. My traffic engineering related professors changed my life with their connections. Does that make sense? You probably get ask this a lot but do you think computer science or electrical engineering is a better degree for learning programming. Both of the programs at my school are ABET accredited and I’m more interested in the software than the hardware side. I’ve been watching your videos and have been really enjoying them.

Is ACQUIN accreditation not as good as ABET?

In order to be a smartphone engineer, you must have solid knowledge of circuits, microelectronics, communications technology, telecommunications, optical sensors, touch screen technology, circuit board design, facial detection, and more. This is why they have such a high salary of $215,000 median after benefits and bonuses. This number often reflects an advanced degree and a lot of experience, but that is the reported median among smartphone engineers for their 2019 report. This means some engineers are making into the $300,000 range most likely.

Am i the only one confused why mechatronics engineer isn't that popular isn't it a mix of one of the biggest kind of engineering shouldn't it be one of the best kind and not something being barely looked at as engineering

But so the biggest problem with mechatronics is the education system is behind with it. What if you take university abroad that is caught on with mechatronics would it then be a good idea or is mechatronics in general just a little ahead of it’s time.
