Eventually she gets her mind back, but realizes the only way to stop the bad guys from taking control of her again is to kill herself. So Spider-Man has no choice but to let it happen. It's a genuinely sad scene in context.

Would've been more believable and impactful if he would've tried to save her with his string but not make it on time, or try to jump/run towards her, anything but standing still really.
