- Get your popcorn ready. Today we dial back the clock to explore the journey of the original Polaroid palette: black & white. Together with a noir film following the travails of an In An Instant host from the past, we explore the darling path of monochrome Polaroid history.
Nights of Monochrome stars Dorian O'Brien, written & directed by Ben Fraternale, with cinematography by Natt McFee, sound by Claire DiCiuccio, and production assistance from Lauren Brown.

I am a funeral director and often scan people's photos to make videos for the funeral. I see all kinds of of old Polaroid's, and I can relate to the quality and character of Polaroids through the years, and how they have held up,(or not), but many times they have held up better than "normal" photos. It was an amazing progression in just a couple of decades.
Truly incredible how well many have aged! It must be a fascinating experience combing over those old shots and seeing that progression. Thanks for stopping by Curt! 🖤🤍
Video production quality is AMAZING on this episode SHEEEEEESH
Thank you Ken we went extra hard on this one!!
I love Polaroid black and white, that stuff develops like it's Time Zero and 1985. The stuff you can do with it is super cool!
i can't comprehend how this channel doesn't have 100x number of subs. the content quality is insane and this video was just the cherry on top. congrats Ben keep it going buddy :)
Thank you for this encouragement Nicholas! I know growth takes time and I remain patient, all I can do is try my best out here and keep the love flowing!
give it time. Give it time. Once the mighty algorithm catches it, things will explode.
honestly I have the feeling that people who find this channel and stay for the content are on board on another level. we might be 8000 true fans as opposed to 100k casual viewer. and it's only going to grow with time!
@@differentlyabledmuslimjewi4475 I need that mighty algy to kick in stat! 😂
@@Fedbo That's true Fedi, I really appreciate how loyal the audience has been and the great friends I've made along the way. Everyone in here is super passionate and we all share this love for the art & medium!
This channel is criminally underrated
I can imagine a future with Ben directing and writing a feature length documentary of Polaroid or even other topics such as the first Nasa launch or the first man on the moon.
Ben you are an artist I cannot wait to see what is next and cherish what you create. I love in an instant😄
Dude you’re the best, I hope that comes eventually! “12 Angry Men” style film featuring Edwin Land pitted against the Kodak executives trying to steal his inventions simply must be in the cards some day. Maybe I’ll be the first man to shoot Polaroids in space, who knows!! At any rate, thanks again bud and have a phenomenal day!!
Damn, Ben! You rock! You ALL do! What a great project. The costumes! The props! The beautiful lighting & dramatic shadows! The writing and acting? (Well, okay, it was corny-good too!) It looks like everyone had a great time and we're lucky that you shared it with us. What a great way to show off your story-telling and historical writing/directing/shooting/editing/EVERYTHING talents! --- Wishing you continued success on this wonderful adventure you're on! 💖🍸👍
Allen, thank you beyond words! This was one of my favorite episodes to produce by far, and really hope to make more like it!
Love this level of production, WOW 👏
Very cool script also!
Thanks Jaime! Was extremely fun to fire something like this off, hopefully more like it coming in the future!
what the heck?! you went above and beyond with this, good sir. Kudos to a video well done. I loved the tempo, back tune right on the mark and mixing shots with drama, solid acting and you almost old timey news reporterly going over the history of polaroid black and white.
Big thanks K, it was a labor of love but so happy with how it came together and these positive reactions mean so much to me!
This is a very yummy episode, good job Ben
Scrom nom nom, a delicious video treat 🤤
Brilliant video, colourful dialogue. It covers the whole spectrum of its subject with a rainbow of emotions and feelings. Dazzling production values. Can't wait for the colorized version!
Haha in 2070 they’ll colorize this for sure!! 😂 thank you so much Richard!
FP-3000b will always hold a special place in my heart
ok with this one I definately can say tha in an instant is the best channel on the whole of youtube. This is witty, artsy, nerdy, autoreferential and beautifully written and even more breautifuly shot. I'm in awe!
It's an honor to hear something like that, we can only do our best out here on this crowded site! Thank you so much Fedi!!
Loved the mini movie and b/w Polaroid coverage
Thank you!!
Same 👍
A classic episode I liked the skit and it was clever to film the video in black and white
Markimus I love that, we were trying to cork out a classic with this one and I'm so glad you appreciated it as such. Thank you!
A monochromatic masterpiece!
This production quality of video is too good! I'm deceased!
Crispy!!! I am RIP in peace!!!
What a great episode! That ambience of the unforgettable noir film genre was so lovely, definitely this is my favourite episode👏👏👏
So awesome to hear this was your fav!! Thanks always Estrella!!
This was your best episode yet! What an amazing way to showcase the camera, the photos and the story behind it all.
Bravo good sir, Bravo!
Cody my man thank you! I really appreciate that dude
blown away by how you kept that 50s way of speaking throughout the video
Haha once I clicked into it I was fully time traveling 😂
Wow, this episode was amazing and sooo professional. A piece of art in black and white. I liked it so much how you played with the light-effects in the scenes with Dorian. Many thanks and my compliments. Bravo! Greetings from Zurich, Switzerland
Thank you Andreas! It was so awesome to get the crew together and do something special like this, which I'd absolutely love to keep doing in the future. Cheers!!
The greatest twist on an episode!!! 🖤
Oscar worthy. Thanks for this good shit Fraternale. I'm a black and white baby at heart.
Hot doubly damn that was good! Very well done and paced out perfectly! Never knew instax monochrome was simulated, always knew something was up with the tinted look and not black and white.
Yeah Instax mono is a little trick of its own! But still quite nice regardless. Thanks for the kind words Andrew!!
Bro, you are amazing man. Thank you for giving me something else to look forward to.
Michael I really appreciate the love dude, means a lot to hear that.
There's normal RUclips videos, and then there's videos like this which just blow everything else out of the water. Love it
Blowing things out of water has been a dream since childhood. Thank you Josh!!
How has only 10,000 people seen this this is a masterpiece
I didn't think the production quality could get higher, and it did
The goal is to always elevate, thank you mate
🖤🤍
This was too good! Ben you fantastic genius!
Alan my guy!!! Much love!
Favorite film to shoot! just really makes every shot seem so much more dramatic! Keep up the work!
Oh man, I love this creative flair and storytelling! Spot on with the Noir vibe. When I got my impulse the first film I purchased was black and white 600. Probably because of my love of working with monochrome film and only slightly because the color 600 was out of stock XD
Haha regardless with that color out of stock I definitely encourage folks to play around more with the black and white emulsions. Such a treat that we still have those! Thank you Ghost!
The production value and story are through the roof in this episode 🙌 Great job! 👍
Thank you so much Sandro!!
Dude! You outdid yourself with an amazing episode! The level of production quality was superb and this channel seriously deserves more subs. Keep it up man!
Thank you Peter, and major shoutout to the team of Dorian, Natt, Claire, and Lauren who came in on this one to help, hope we can keep growing the channel!
You are so great! Well directed and very well narrated. Not to mention absolutely perfect pics (as always)! Keep up the fantastic content!
Koopa! My favorite sandwich (hold the Big Cheese). Thanks bud!!
Well done always Ben!! Really loving this concept
Thanks Bobby!!
Even more wonderful than usual. I don’t know how you do it, but your videos are one of the joys in a life made limited by COVID-19.
Now if I can just figure out why I have this urge to rewatch Night of the Hunter (or if that should be listed as a side effect warning).
Thank you Joan, that means so so much to hear!!
Amazing!!! You just keep surpassing yourself!!! I loved Type 55 and 665 P/N film!!! I was also excited when B&W 600 came out!!! I feel that the current Polaroid B&W is better than their color stuff ... use more of it than the color!!!
Brian my man, appreciate this! I totally love the current B&W stuff too, totally different kind of atmosphere and texture to it. And love when that grain shines through too!
You Sir, are an gift on this platform and for all polaroidheads around the globe! Such a great production value! So inspiring!
I love this community and appreciate their support, and yours!!
Mate, this was a visual treat of epic proportions!
Your own presenting style like a 40s newsboy. The script had me chucking away like an idiot. Fortunately Ali is now used to this!
I love polaroid bw, some of my favourite shots are sx-70 bw and I'm really looking forward to receiving the 3 shots of one instant bw when they come too. I'm thinking 3 big shot portraits.
If this can be a Fraternale films crossover, not really sure as its all you, I'm in the realms of inception here... then this is it!
Beautifully acted by your main star. Perfect cinematography. Complete package. Loved it.
Mock! Glad my 40s newsboy style came through 😂😂 - that was almost spur of the moment. I did one take normally and then thought "heck it, I'm just gonna go for it" haha. This would certainly be something of a Fraternale Films crossover since we had our little crew together for this one! Can't wait to see your Big Shot portraits on the Supersense B&W! Thanks again mate ❤️❤️❤️
I shot some noir style self portraits a couple months ago - inspired by T Hopper's video on the topic, great photos man!
I like the Polaroid Black and white SX-70 film, it's been a great way to get into black and white photography for me
Smashed the like button for the noir algorithm! Loved the history lesson and the minimovie.
black border black and white is classy a f.
Thank you bruv!! We gotta get that Algy on our side!
As always insane production value!
Omgggggg…You continue to outdo yourself, Ben! 👏👏👏👏
Yameen my guy! Filmhowyabnw crossover alert
Hahahaha this is soooo good Ben! Well written and great acting! I laughed the whole way through! In an instant has honestly become one of my top 3 on RUclips! Keep up the stellar work my guy! 👏🏾👍🏾🙌🏾
I love your channel so much!! Both informative and entertaining. Thanks for doing what you do!
Emelyne you’re the best, thank you!!
Crikey, this is awesome Benny - film photog RUclips level uppp
That was great! Hope we'll see more of this kind of content in the future :D
Brilliant Video ! Bravo !!
I like this just as a little movie, let alone the educational elements being fascinating. I love the parts where it cuts to a Polaroid picture of a shot. It punctuates the story beats well. It reminds me of _La Jetée_ a little bit, but in a more fun, playful way.
That’s so great, I really do hope to do more of this. I’ve only done this in bits and pieces but I certainly enjoyed putting together a longer story with Polaroids as a through-line. More to come I’m sure. Thank you
Sick episode. The ones with the sketch stuff is some of the best episodes in my opinion.
Gabby thank you! They're definitely the episodes I take a lot of pride in. More time consuming and expensive to produce but always worth it.
Just tremendous
What insane production values are these!? Amazing!
~Bigchees
BigCheese33 has spoken!! Thank you!
Informational and FUN as always.

Big thanks Yvonne!!
A very captivating review

Your videos are MASTERPIECES!!! 😄👏👏👏👏👏👏
EPIC. LOVE THIS
Absolutely brilliant!!! I think...... Your Biggest Cheese yet!! :-)
Thankfully no Big Cheeses in these comments 😂😂 thanks mate!!
A little masterpiece!
Another home run!
Much appreciated Oscar!!
I’m obsessed 😍
What an AWESOME episode it was! :o
😍😍😍
This was well made actually funny and smart and deserves huge likes 👍
Thank you DC!!!
Oh, thanks a lot for this beautiful content.
Thanks for this beautiful comment!!
I just found your channel a few days ago (just picked up an Impluse AF from Retrospect too) and have been binging all the videos, and this film noir pastiche is by far one of my favorites! How about a "Nights of Monochrome" sequel?
Excellent 👌🏻I’ve been loading up on monochrome instax to start a new project.
And good day to you sir!
And to you Francisco!
As us old school cats say, in the vernacular of course, that was an awesome fucking video !!! I am the 57stratmann, AKA I am the Dutchman on Instagram. FarOut my friend, you’ve out down yourself....
THE STRATMANN! Big love, very much appreciated!!
The day I buy my first pack of black and white film for my polaroid now, this drops.
Coincidence? I THINK NOT.
Amazing video, Thank you so much.
Thank YOU!
This video deserves an Oscar. Or...no...it deserves a Golden Lion from Venice or a Golden Palm from Cannes!
I can’t argue!! 😂 thank you so so much man ❤️
"hes a frenchman" lol
This video was so lit!!! ❤️❤️❤️
FUEGOOOOOOO thank you!!
Hey Ben, I love your channel! I wonder if you can make a video about how to take good instant pictures (in general)? I'm a beginner with instant film, and I'd love some tips on how to get the best out of the pictures I shoot. Again, great work!
I will def work on something like that! Thanks Barbara!!
Great video! Thanks.
Thanks Tim!
I love it
The whole video was a gem, very well done sir....but was that guy wearing pants ???....I'm definitely going to order that new mini 40 and some B&W film....and a trenchcoat...🤭
Love shooting in black and white on my SX-70 Sonar. Wondering now if we’ll see it on the GO aka Baby Doinker.
There are no plans currently for B&W Go film but we shall see!!
Classic
Genius
So good.
But I want to see the brownish black and white print you mentioned in color.
Haha a definite limit of black and white filmmaking! 😂
another brilliant video.

Big Cheese has finally turned a corner and come thru with the positivity and I’m actually weeping
I can vaguely remember my father moonlighting at a local United Drug store in the late '50s. One day he borrowed a new camera they had started to carry, to use for the day in order to better explain it to prospective customers. It was a Polaroid roll film camera (from what I've read, probably a Model 95). What a mess as I remember (I was must have been around eight, give or take a year.Threading in the films, taking the picture, pulling on a little white tag sticking out of the camera to bring out the picture, tearing it off the roll so as to leave the little white tab for the next picture. Waiting the required time, peeling the layers apart. Immediately swapping the film with a little pink sponge that smelled terrible and came in a little glass tube with a plastic stopper. Trying to do all this in the warm Arizona sun was quite a juggling act. Streaks in the picture where the 'fixer' from the sponge overlapped or faded areas where you didn't realize it didn't cover evenly. My father wondered why anyone would spend this type of money and go thought the hassle just to have a photo a minute after you took it (Kind of funny, because later when the folding SX-70 came out he purchased one). We've come a long way, and yet many things are still the same. (P.S. Couldn't find a period typewriter on short notice and what's with a push button tone phone with * and # symbols in 1957? otherwise things looked spot-on. Nice little video.)
Hi Terry, love your story about you and your dad working with roll film back in the day. They’ve certainly come a long way since, but RIP to the formats who have dropped on the journey! As for the typewriter and phone, keep in mind this is a RUclips video. As detail-oriented as I am, we simply don’t have the budget of a traditional film and often have to use what is on hand. The phone/typewriter had to do as-is, but don’t think for one second I didn’t know someone was going to comment that 😂 - the details are always in mind. Also...all the modern cars in the last shot haha
@@InAnInstant Only reason I noticed the typewriter was the closeup with the little 'rabbit ears' that hold up the paper. I wrote my papers on one like it in college back in the dark ages. Also I didn't notice the phone until I was doing a second watch and noticed it didn't have any finger holes. Had to go full screen (laptop) to see the indentations on the white buttons. Used to dream about doing short films back in the day of Bolex-16MM cameras. Making the video must have been loads of fun. Carry on and have fun.
Thanks Terry!! It was truly spectacular being able to make this for the channel
I don't think Bob was pressing hard enough on the smith corona but other than that good production quality!
Haha trust me there was A LOT of typewriter discussion, not something we filmed lightly 😂
Freakin' awesome :D #orderingsomebwpacks....
Just watched Jeff Smudde shoot BW sx70 before this!
I never knew that Polaroid really never made b&w integral film minus a few dying years with 600
Are these polaroid pics posted somewhere? They're great!!!
Thanks so much Kiko! I’m slowly rolling them out on my Instagram! instagram.com/the.instantgram
@@InAnInstant Ok. Thanksss
Could you elaborate on what you were mentioning about b&w instax film? In which way it is not a "true" black and white?
Do you think you’ll ever do videos on rare film packs? I’ve used the Fragment Design 600 film pack and enjoy the label on the Polaroid’s themselves. I want to buy the YSL pack but I can’t get any more info on what the actual film looks and if it has any labeling on the polaroids.
Hi Juan! In terms of film frames, I don’t think that would be something I dedicate a full video on since there isn’t much to say about them. But otherwise, yes I have done videos on limited edition films like duochrome, round frame, plus extinct films like Spectra, packfilm, etc.
@@InAnInstant sorry I meant to write “rare fashion film packs”, as well as cameras. I think there could definitely be a video about Polaroid and it’s appreciation in the fashion world by brands like Fragment Design, Bape, and Yves Saint Laurent, and probably a few more that I can’t name. Hope you rethink it and explore that Haute Couture side of Polaroid!
@@TheAwesomejuan I have some potential plans for a brand-crossover kind of video (something casual), I'd def be mentioning those in it!
Even I fear BigCheese33...
I quiver at night, afraid his words can bite under the bright moon.
