- How To Be A Stage Magician (Moving From Close Up To Stage Magic) - Magic Stuff - Craig Petty
There are thousands of close up magicians throughout the world. But there are massively less stage magicians. This is a real shame. There are many advantages to being a stage magician. You can make more money, there are more opportunities to perform at a higher level, it opens but so many doors.
However despite all this most magicians that perform professionally or semi professionally will permanently stay a close up magician.
In this video Craig Petty talks about how to transition from close up magic to a stage show. He talks about why you should put a stage act together and the advantages of doing so. Then he talks about the things you need to consider when putting a stage act together. It is actually a lot easier than you would think.
You then get to watch a video of Craig performing on stage. He showcases his cards across routine which he used to win the semi finals of Britain Does Variety. After this Craig breaks down the performance and discuses what we can learn from it.
The bottom line is if you want to be a stage magician then this is a video that you really want to watch.

This is the most under talked topic in magic. Thanks for doing this video. My favorite video so far 👍👍👍
Any books/resources/videos you can recommend for this topic? Thanks !
Yes ! Although I still want to crack closeup I still want to learn about stage for the future
You really should. Performing on stage is awesome.
On the cards across, You asked "what can we take from this" ?
That your a great performer!!!
YES
Hello Craig thanks for another great upload. This is great advice. Yes please if you could explore this in further uploads that would be outstanding. Specifically taking more close-up routines, material and transferring it to a stage setting.
This is the best video of this type I have ever seen
I learned a lot 💯 from you and this is my first time listening to you.
I would like you to give me tips and how I can get better at my magic show...I'm a magician from Jamaica 🇯🇲
THIS is GREAT! keep doing this series..love to see your close up stuff that can play on stage as well
Would love to see more stage magic video's Craig, both advice and performance. Found this really useful as I'm a close-up magician trying to put together a stage show. Many thanks :)
This is gold !
Yes please do more of this.
The how and why is very interesting.
I come from a theater background , am doing close up but the stage still appeals to me.
Am trying to upsell/transition to a stage show ; seeing a pro on stage who breaks it down afterwards is a lot of help.
Thanks so much. Your advice is very helpful. I love when you do videos like these 👍. I must say that your cards across routine is awesome.
Quick question for virtual shows should l get the pro or poker version of Clued Up by Jamie Daws?
Great insights!
Amazing video.
This can help magicians like me to make the magic bigger and better!
Please go on with these kind of videos how to get the magic up on stage.
Thank you for this specific video! I'm going to try some open mics around town. May I copy your routine and adjust it a bit for me?
I never know if it's ok to do that...
Just got Morgan and west thought of card accross just practicing that
It’s a great trick.
excellent
Another great vid! Love the content! Maybe another idea for a magic review is He’s Not Here by Jamie Daws! It’s another Alakazam trick so Ryland would love it and I would love to see what you guys think!
Hey Craig, recently become a big fan of the channel, I love magic and one of my favourite things to do is watch videos of my favourite performers over and over, however, as you probably know yourself if you watch a trick enough times eventually you can probably figure out how it's done, this is how I have learned a lot of the tricks I do as for the longest time I didn't have the money to buy books and downloads. My question therefore is, is it morally right to perform another magicians trick if you have figured it out on your own without going through that magician to learn it? Would you consider it intellectual theft or just harmless?
I'm sorry but I couldn't bare how you credited Scott Alexander for adding the envelopes. Scott's routine is heavily copied from Zen's Envelopes created by Michael Zen in the 1920s. He was the genius!
The money shot is including a live performance.
Wow, excellent routine but you appear really nervous as you are speaking at 1000 words a minute, You can still get all the laughs and all the business by not having a running commentary through the whole routine as a thought, you ask the audience to count with you but you then start shouting the count yourself and drown them out..not necessary. Plays well with the volunteers actually counting the 7 and 13 cards..just a thought, Excellent routine based on Bills routine , less is more sometimes with words and volume.. but still very enjoyable, thanks
