    ADDENDUM: I no longer recommend switching opponents by unlocking target, since in the newer versions of the game (1.9+) nearby enemies will initiate a tackle on you if you're not (at least soft) locked unto a target while moving. This is not a bad change per se, but it makes fighting multiple opponents even harder, and, one of the good things is, it prevents you from backpedaling away from enemies (before the change it was possible to unlock targets and backpedal away without the enemies being able to reach you with attacks). You will have to use the scroll function between enemies instead (unfortunately this gives you less freedom of movement though).

      Tackling is one of the biggest cancers in this game. They can tackle from ridiculous ranges and for some stupid reason it's not only a hit in the back, it makes you change direction.
      Which doesn't make any sense whatsoever.
      Great showcase, nice to see an update. I'm recommending this mod to everyone I know, because it is a game changer. Completely different experience.
      I'm doing all negative perks run, I've even disabled stamina visual effects (sadly you can't disable this ridiculous rumbling noise) and it's been a blast.

      Help!!!! I can't install this mod anymore???
      I did everything correctly i think, i extracted it in the "Mods" folder i created in the KCD file, but the game then launches without it.
      I tried do copy all the "zzz_Bettercombatetc" files in the "Data" file of KCD, but nothing.
      I tried to duplicate the files both in "Data" and in the "Mods" folder, but nothing, the game when i start a new game will just start without it!!!
      Thx man, anyone that can help me, i can't play the Vanilla game, too easy

    Extremely well made mod that prevents you from super cheesing the vanilla combat. Just finished my first hardcore play through with it and the runt fight was amazing due to the fact he had a helmet and him and I couldn’t just spam master strikes to win.

    I'm going to be honest, the description alone on the mod page made this seem extremely daunting compared to the base game. I'm glad you made this tutorial/showcase, as it does seem to offer a more balanced experienced. Hope I don't get my ass kicked too hard lol.

    Good changes overall HOWEVER I dont like how when fighting multiple oponents, enemies can just disengage from combat and run past you. If you lower your guard against an oponent who has you in his range, you'd get punished hard and yet those enemies can walk or run around you and even when you strike them, they rotate instantly, in vanilla even master blocking you.

      It's a bit problematic, yes, and it does make it frustrating to fight multiple opponents. The way I see it however, this is realistic. Firstly because it is extremely hard to fight 1 vs. 2 in a real swordfight, not to mention 1 vs. 3 or more. Secondly, if they outnumber you, you can only focus on one at a time, which means the other opponent will be able to run into another position.

      That they can punish you if you lower your guard is a new addition to the base game which I addressed in the addendum (pinned post).
      If you have any ideas how to make it feel better, I'm all ears.

      @@thunderkettle7829 Hijacking his comment, I wonder if there's a way to mod their odds of perfect blocking to be tied to whether they just took damage. In Ghost of Tsushima, the idea is while it's easy to perfect block an enemy's first attack, their subsequent ones are much harder - this rewards reading them well without giving you an easy escape plan if you fail.
      If we translate that here to the enemies of KCD, that would mean making them good at perfect blocking the initial attack but much worse at interrupting combos if you successfully start one. I think that will be much more fair and less frustrating than the current system (which all but removes combos as a viable part of the game.) It could also make feints actually useful (they didn't seem to work at all when I played an older version of this mod, not like they work in the base game either really.) Finally, it solves the base game's problem of allowing combos but not necessarily incentivizing them - this would encourage you to do everything you can to start a combo while rewarding you if you manage to do so.
      If this somehow just allows smashing their head again, maybe you could use some insights from the newer changes to master striking zones to make them more likely to guard from the same side you just hit. So combos will remain useful since you're changing angles after each hit but spamming at their head will just open you up to a masterstrike. Just some ideas as I'm not sure what it looks like behind the scenes.

    thank you for awesome mod! you made me to buy kcd on pc even i already had on ps4. btw when you outnumbered, horse mount combat is really good. it took some times to get used to it, but when you do you gonna see why cavalry is strong vs intantry

      Thank you! That's very nice, I hope you enjoy it on PC and with mods! Yeah, I know that you can use mounted combat, but to me it seems like some people use it to avoiding real combat because they didn't bother to learn and master it. That said, it's a play style some people like; but to me horseback combat seems a bit clunky and unfinished, so I generally don't do it. In reality the Cumans should be riding around shooting arrows at you, but I guess that wouldn't make for a very enjoyable experience at all...

      @@thunderkettle7829 The mod is good for 1v1s but thats not the problem. Fightinh multiple enemies is extremely hard and frustrating and sometimes, you are forced to fight on your own, so you need some kind of advantage

      @@sirwohrnenvonwernohn5209 With the recent changes to master strikes, you may want to try using that to your advantage: Stay defensive and wait for one of the enemies to attack into your zone for a master strike (and a follow up strike if possible).

    Does anyone know how to edit the perfect block/ masterstrike timings for this? They are way too tight. The changes on stance requirements are more than enough for me. I don't want to need spidy senses to ever be able to PB.

    I got this mod in one of its earlier stages, honestly didn't like it at the time. Nerfing master strike into the ground effectively removed it from the game - it may have been dominant before, but it didn't seem right to completely take away one of the player's tools. Combine that with the almost useless clinch and it got very tedious especially against opponents like the wayfaring knight.
    This version seems a lot better (I haven't played the game in like a year.) The changes to master strike actually seem pretty clever - rewarding consistency instead of making it a lottery pull. I still think you should continue fine tuning clinches though - I remember fighting against Straw and being unable to beat him in a clinch despite being very high leveled. It makes no sense that an unarmored peasant should be able to beat you there super consistently. It also felt that even mid level enemies rarely lost a clinch even with everything you had pumped to max.

      It seems very much optimized to make sure "everything" is a challenge - while maxed. I'm playing hardcore and took a trait to reduce strength for speech craft since in vanilla I find high strength can get a bit silly - but now I'm punished for that choice using this mod.
      Wish there was a way to move into the mirrored position as blocking, since the AI is changing positions really fast now (I guess to avoid MS?) - looks silly too, since changing positions would cost stamina IRL - here it doesn't so they waste so much energy without a consequence.

    1v1 are entertaining and fun
    But anything more and it gets frustrating and cancerous fast.I'm all for realism,but not at the expense of fun.

      Been playing with this mod for a while now. Couldn't play without it. It's really what the game needed. I strongly recommend it for anyone who likes a challenge.

    This mod looks good on paper but it made the combat impossible for me as a new player. Enemies perfect blocking 90% of my attacks regardless of me trying attacking from different sides and stuff (they also perfect block/dodge all of my ripostes after my perfect block lol). Don't even bother fighting multiple guys early on (say hello to unscalled enemy lvls in road ambushes given by this mod).

      I found myself pushed towards heavily investing in archery for a while since they can't block arrows well while using Mutt a lot early game to open enemies up to attack. The mod definitely still needs some tuning imo, but I do think some of its changes are a good starting point for removing cheese in the base game.

      Agreed. The mod is a great idea, but poorly executed imo. Peasants with no martial training whatsoever being able to perfect block etc makes no sense.

      The question is why would you recommend this for new player? Considering the changes on this mod, player would have to know the mechanics beforehand and adapt by to changes. A person who just starts playing this with a mod wouldn't have faintest clue for anything, lol.
      Also enemies do less perfect blocking the more damage they've endured, it's all about wearing them down to finish them off.

    Looks good. I now have to try it. Was looking for a "make it a little harder" mod for a while.
    I've played a few hours. I cannot get enough sleep! It always says "You've slept too long." Oh, well, maybe I'll just hang out at a 70% bed until I can get to 100% energy.
    I was surprised. I died on one hit when making the horse chase to Talmberg. So, the very next time I rode up the creek beds as much as possible, and then on the last leg, I went to the other side of the creek. He said, "Damn, this is the wrong way!" about 1 second before the cut scene where he gets to Talmberg.
    All in all, very interesting. I was able to get Bernard to teach me masterstrikes before I went to meet with Nightingale. The first fight were the Cumans where Capon was tied up. I got one masterstrike in and then I just had to basically wear him down. Never could get another. Still made it more interesting.

      I just went through the first tournament and killed Peter afterwards. That was a helluva tournament. I had no clue whether I was going to win or not. I use dodge more than others do.

    I still don't understand how to run master strike. I do the perfect block at the right time but he doesn't execute the master strike, which from what I understand is just pressing the defend button. I've tried attacking at the same time but it still doesn't work. I've tried holding the lock button but it doesn't work. I've watched the video a thousand times and I can't. Can someone help me please? It's disheartening.
    I already removed the mod and put it again to see if it was really active and it was.

    This is seems like a great mod. I'm going to start a playthrough (I played quite a bit already, but it started to feel easy) with this mod. KC:D is a great game and I love the realism it has, combat was already good but I'm sure with this it'll be even better.

    I find MSs particularly hard to time, i just can't get it right, it feels honestly more like luck to get it, any recommendations on how I could get better with it?
    Mind you, that I'm mirroring zones.
    Also Bernard doesn't seem to perform a MS when I'm actively trying to provocate it by attacking the mirrored zone🤔

    This is unbelievalble and amazing. I haven't played the game and this is actually scary on how fun it looks. I remember playing just some hours and at the fighting tutorial noticing it was a bit hard but I read in general since years the fighting wasn't cool.
    I read some messages here and also your 2 years ago "addendum"... I come from nexus where I found this video link to youtube...
    Is there a way to make the fighting so fluid and "intuitive" and be this good and I need the mod for that? Or I can still enjoy the vanilla? Or I better forget it?

      The problem with vanilla is that regular attacks are wrong because good opponents just masterstrike you. So the correct way of playing become being passive and masterstriking yourself. This mod solves this problem. Now masterstriking takes skill and getting masterstriked is a mistake on your part.
      Also remember when fighting multiple opponents you can use mounted combat. You can practice hitting the trees to get the timing.
      Although the starter horse is not good for this he is a coward and throw you off. You want a horse with high courage!

      @@hosseinjavanmard4544 This stuff is aramaic.. it seems like a huge game filled with stuff to learn.. it will require quite some hours to understand.. at least some dedication and focus. I can't understand what you are talking about because it's stuff I never experienced... I understand as it is explained well but I don't know how to do this.. for me it's like never seen before stuff.
      I don't play 1 game forever, I wanna experience all the good games with the best quality experience possible, so I won't play the game more than once. I play quality 1 runs.Thanks for the suggestions will see what I can do... as I get into the game and develop my character I guess.

    What do you mean by "mirror zone?" Do you mean matching the zone the NPC is in? So if he's on the left (relative to the player) then you put yourself on the left too?

      Got confused as well, that's what it means, yes! If he attacks from his right zone (left from the players POV) you need to block during the backwards motion of the weapon in your left zone. Timing wise still quite difficult, which it should be I guess

      Weird. Did you keep the extracted files in their own subfolder in Mods? Either way you shouldn't be putting them in Data.
      Also, the mod doesn't change bootup or anything so just check on an existing Henry before you start a new one. It'll be obvious really fast if the changes worked the moment you start any fight.

    Downloaded the mod but I have a question when it comes to Perfect Blocks and then Ripostes, not the Masterstrike.
    There are times when an enemy will do like 4 hits on me, when Im sure I have the stamina to block more than 1 hit, but only allows me to block 1 hit, and then the rest of the 3 follow.
    DO i have to manually aim to block in their attack direction? Or is that just for Master Strikes? Because Im trying to find a way to block as many attacks in their combo as possible

    I'm in utter disbelief that this mod adds "You have to match your opponents attack zone" for master strikes because when I learned them from Bernard, his words implied that was the mechanic baseline. I absolutely HATE warhorse and their shit design philosophy with master strikes. They make it sound like "You have to attack and block at the same time" which makes fucking sense, but no, apparently, it's an automatic mechanic that is completely unrelated to the zone the attack is coming from. GOD FORBID the devs make it a skill-based system baseline, and GOD FORBID they make enemies reasonable about their own master-striking capabilities. Just stupid. Absolutely stupid. I personally don't think the mechanic SHOULD EVEN BE IN THE GAME. I think It should have been tied to PARRY (Perfect Block) BASED COMBOS. (2 hit.Parry taking place of the first hit in most 3 hit combos) Not just some magical mechanic everyone does because "DURR I HIT BLOCK AT RIGHT TIME LOL" What about that is "Masterful?" AT LEAST this mod makes it relevant to the enemies swing direction. Taking SOME SKILL from both the player and "The enemy" even if at the end of the day that's player based too, which is honestly, IMO just as good as a parry based combo.

      Yes, you're right. Bernard does actually say that, but it was never true for Vanilla. Nice for me that Bernard's on my team at least ;-)
      How are you finding the combat with BCAIC; does it satisfy your desire for a skill-based system?

      ​@@thunderkettle7829 Yes, it's been much more interesting, and even though it's a mod to enhance this one, the "No Slo Mo" thing is just way cooler and makes more sense, slo mo really made the flow of combat awkward. Let me tell you, I can no longer just run up on people spamming attacks in fistfights anymore. This is honestly a good thing. I was a brawling legend at lvl 1 before.
      The only issue I'm currently having is clinches, I was pretty bad at them to begin with (Because honestly, I think there isn't much of a time window to begin with, without the perk) it may just be a baseline game thing, but I started a new game, and I'm fighting the bandits outside of skalitz rn, and it's hard to initiate a clinch with them, I run up on them after they stagger block (Implying they're out of stam) and generally after I run up on them, they don't clinch, they smack me, then clinch me, and I lose every clinch with them, but that parts expected, especially after being low stam myself for getting hit in the first place, (EDIT: Just got it to work properly, I guess I was too far away to begin with and they were recovering from their stagger, being scared of the part I wrote about fist fight clinches)
      when I fought Kunesh, and the people outside the german's house, I noticed that in fist fights, we sometimes got into clinch after clinch even though we werent all that close, I won a few, they won more, I won the fight in the end, but it was definitely strange to be in such a grapple battle.
      I'm going to play around with it some more and see how the masterstrikes work.
      Also, Runt is in-fact, a horrible baby man who cannot fight with the masterstrike rework. It was hilarious smacking his invincible face in the scripted fight, just for him to one-tap me with a stab from his club

      Bernard keeps using polearm in basic training making overhead part of Perfect block impossible

      @@suspicioussalad5578 Yes, there is that side-effect of the master strike restriction to zones: The AI will be prompted to perform the MS even if they're in the wrong zone, and when that happens, they'll fail to block entirely - this is of course more prevalent the higher their level is compared to yours. It'll smoothen out pretty quickly though.
      Bernard using a polearm is, I believe, a bug from the Polearms Unleashed mod (which I do recommend). I think the creator said he fixed it in the most recent versions though.

      @@thunderkettle7829 Yes it is, also, thank you, I got it worked out, and I've performed MS on the Fainthearted Knight properly. Very very fun game now! The ONLY thing I wish for now is a Dodge overhaul, like letting me hold an attack, dodge, and utilize the held attack during the enemy backswing.
      Since dodging is just so much riskier compared to blocking, and has no offensive mechanic attached to it, I feel like it would be a much more realistic and fun risk-reward mechanic. I don't really understand why Warhorse made dodge so dang weak compared to the overloaded block mechanic of the base game.

      To be fair... they kind of already do that in the base game. Especially if you get unlucky and ganked by the stupid scythe peasants (seriously Warhorse, polearms are strong but should they really twoshot a super armored player?)

      @@perrytran9504 irl its actually pretty accurate as well, because while ur protected, its still 5 men vs just 1, so they could just pin you to the ground and beat you up.

      ​@@Otgel a fully armorer person against 5 peasant, assuming their combat abilities and gear is crap, will actually NOT have an issue dealing with them -> the armor is suppose to give you enough protection for you to -start- taking them out 1 by1 in that chaos of a fight..
      so assuming they keep bashing your armor and they dont have good protection and cant really block well (just look at what henry did with his father after they made the sword - he couldnt even cut a piece of wood properly - and thats after some training), you would stab one and just make them bleed and they would run.
      at the end, this is a game, making "low" level bandits act like low level bandits would be less fun IMO .. i cant wait what they will decide to go with on KCD2..

      @@adamlevi87 the plate armor does not cover 100% of the body. Have loads of gaps where its only chain that can be pierced easily. It is only slashing damage that it protects against. Also have blunt force, an axe or sword hit in the head would still make stars over your head. Also vs multiple people you can easily be tripped. Armor does not make you invincible.

      I understand what you are saying but this is still something i disliked.. moving between targets and 3 super weak peasants kicking your ass is insane.
      again, I cannot wait to see how KDC2 will address this.

    Mod is fun for duels but terrible to fight multiple opponents. Enemies perform to many perfect blocks(and therefore interupt 99% of combos) and there is no time to mirror stance to perform master strikes. Good for archers though...

      Realism. Have to use stealth/poisons/bow. There are no forced encounters 1 vs multiple enemies.

    The tackle mechanic always annoyed me in this game, specifically what happens at the 9:00 mark. NPC's tackling you when you're facing them shouldn't be a thing.

      It seems to've become a bit more frequent in recent versions of the game, but I can't be sure. It's probably pretty hardcoded into the AI behaviour.
      It tends to only happen when you're outnumbered though, and I think it kind of makes sense there, as a way for the AI to try to outflank you.

      I usually try to instantly stab at the guy doing it. That way you can stop him, and sometimes get a free hit in.

      I guess it's also a way to deter backpedaling, as it's usually triggered when the enemy is out of combat reach. (Though beckpedaling is a must sometimes, when you try to keep them all in front of you). Personally I don't mind it that much, since it just makes fighting multiple opponents even more dangerous.

      @@thunderkettle7829 I do like the idea behind the mechanic, I just wish it was implemented better. Like you said it makes fighting multiple people harder, but at the same time if you're playing a light armour dodge build for Henry and the ai decides to tackle you, that's a pretty decent chunk of health you've lost, mostly through no fault of your own. Like you I noticed that if you're outnumbered and you unlock your target the ai usually initiates a tackle even if you're still facing them.

    Too bad that the combat is flawed to begin with .. no matter what you do you end up walking backward for miles every fight because their is no 360 combat or even any proper way to control space in 1v+ combat. The lock on system is bad , i don't know, but game like for honnor, while focused on 1v1 combat , is still enjoyable on 1v+ scenario. It is interesting and addictive , but flawed

    Can you please actually explain something are you so you say block at this certain time but that's b******* it's not doing anything maybe it's because it's two years old maybe they changed how it works but the opponents are doing all sorts of crazy s*** that I can't do am I supposed to do the fighting tutorial before the tournament or something cuz there's a lot of stuff I'm blocking when you said the block and it just ain't working
