    I bought 2 of these.
    1 to track a car and the other for a trailer.
    The GPS tracking is quite acurate and the movement alerts are good.
    However if you plan to use these on the 3 AAA lithium batteries you will be dissapointed.
    Some of the write ups say you will get up to 18 months from the AAA batteries i personally have not even had either of the units go a week without displaying the low battery alert then shutting down.
    I have been using the Energizer ultimate Lithium batteries at a cost of near $25 AU for 4.
    As I said the Tracking is good but the let down is battery life.
    I will be hard wiring both of my units.

    I am on planning on installing these on two ultralight aircrafts. My question is: Do you have to physically press the button to turn it on every time you want it to monitor? Or if you have the power cable connected to it, once you turn the ignition on, will it power the unit on automatically? I would like to have an automatic set-up to always turn on or stay on. (The units will be hidden under the composite shell)

    • @JohnKJohnson
      @JohnKJohnson 4 года назад

      Apparently not, which makes two major drawbacks with this device: 1) cannot recharge the batteries via the USB cord (e.g., for vehicles that are intermittently used, using a switched vehicle power source), and 2) will not start automatically upon receiving USB power (therefore unsuitable for long-term hidden placement without a permanent power supply, and ensuring it is switched "on"- duh.) I just purchased the device, a year service plan, and two USB cables so this a $200 lesson for me. In specific response to your question, 1) I set up my spot Trace a couple of days ago and it works fine ON THE BATTERIES (4 AAA). Pursuant to your question I just went out to my vehicle and tested--with the Trace device in both the initial "off" state, and with batteries "in" and "out" to see if it gave me any indications of initiating while being plugged it into the vehicle power via the extra cost cable. Unfortunately, none of the lights illuminated, indicating that it needed the button to start it. I may hardwire it directly to the vehicle battery to overcome these limitations. Disappointed in the product. Would not buy again.

    • @AndreSilva-fp9bs
      @AndreSilva-fp9bs 4 года назад

      @@JohnKJohnson Hi John. Thank you for your reply. It helped a lot! As soon as I started reading your reply to where there is no auto-on at power via USB Cable, I immediately then thought about altering the electronic board to "hot wire" the device directly..
      but then keep in mind that the button usually cannot be constantly remained "pressed"(physically or electronically) in this case, I suggest a timer-controlled relay for "X' amount of seconds after power is sent to the USB Cable.... (usually a small "NO - Normally Open" relay connected wired to the button contacts be activated through the timer, once power triggers the relay to "close" the contact, the "ON-OFF button contacts" will remain activated for "3-5" seconds, the depress ) - this way it would not be "hot-wired" constantly.... In this case, don't forget the warranty will certainly be voided... but depending on the value of the asset.. it is definitely worth the risk!!

      @@JohnKJohnson Also, can you inform me if the device will work no NO BATTERIES but connected through the USB PORT?

    • @JohnKJohnson
      @JohnKJohnson 4 года назад

      @@AndreSilva-fp9bs Well, I cannot really tell because it turns out that I discovered that my USB connection has no power--Oops, I will have to fix that. Need a week more to fool around with this (got some other things more important to do immediately.)
      Right now the device is on a switched circuit, but I think I will move it to an always "on" circuit, install some of their recommended batteries in it and live with it that way (right now I have rechargeable batteries, which may be less-energy dense) just carry extra batteries with me as the recommended batteries are not commonly available. I also turned down the reporting period to 30 minutes in an effort to conserve battery life.
      No doubt there were engineering constraints to get the device this small, but it seems bizarre that they didn't incorporate the functionality that you and I seek, namely 1) charging rechargeable batteries while on USB power, and 2) initiating the GPS automatically after power has been cut and then restored. The Trace is a relatively old product; perhaps there will be a newer version coming that will have more functionality.
      I was previously was using an Inreach device for tracking, with a monthly subscription price of around $35. It worked fine for tracking, and was a full-meal-deal satellite communicator, besides. There is a new "Inreach Mini" that is about twice the size of the Trace, but that I think would fit in my covert installation. And it DOES recharge the rechargeable battery when connected to USB. But, I paid in advance for a year's subscription on the Trace so I will stick with it for the next year. I downgraded my Inreach service to an "Emergency" plan which is around $13/month, so together these two subscriptions cost less than the Inreach service alone. However, there were a lot of comments that the Trace people have a nasty practice of bumping their yearly subscription fee 50% after the first year.
      There are, of course, a multitude of clever trackers that rely on cellular service but I wanted something that worked when cell towers were not available. But, perhaps I should rethink that.

    • @JohnKJohnson
      @JohnKJohnson 4 года назад

      @@AndreSilva-fp9bs Yes, it is powered (from being turned "off") by either batteries or USB. However, it does not "start" without pushing it's button. For this reason I have wired directly to a battery source and just left it "on" 24/7.
      I cannot discern much utility from having a USB power source, but it is still new; I might still learn learn something.
      One problem that I had was that the USB power source has impossibly light and fragile wires that difficult to strip and splice. One might look around for a power source with more durable wires.

    I use TAG anti theft .. $400 but its a one time payment..for life. No subscription required. Works in both canada and us.. $200 is way too much... drop that to $40/year and ill think about it.

    I hate they charge too much for basically what sits around most of the time. if it was like $5 a month, then they'd have my ear. But thats me.

    You have to have a clear view of the sky.....which means it needs to be out in the open.....which means the thief will see it, remove it, and then toss it in a garbage can. Which makes it pretty much useless. Unless I'm missing something here.

      That's literally less then a 40 hour week at 7.25 an hour including income tax. If you can buy a 4 wheeler, camper, trailer, ect $200 a year is cheap insurance compared to buying a new one.

      Compared to potentially losing a $50,000+ piece of equipment that is capable of making $200 an hour, it’d be well worth it. People who steal that kind of equipment are either extremely dumb or smart enough to disconnect the battery once loaded basically leaving you with a short timeframe between the time it’s stolen and their first stop to search for tracking devices. Guess you’re lucky enough not to have worked enough to own anything of similar value.
