- This series of videos simulates what it is like to learn how to read. This is the seventh practice video lesson, after lesson 10. Watch the introduction video first to understand the purpose of these videos. Then, watch the rest in order.
The language used is English BUT the written language is a (very modified version) of Arabic script. So, if you know English, you will understand what is being said but, you will have to learn a new writing system.
Each video teaches a new sound-symbol correspondence (letter) through a key word which begins with that sound-symbol correspondence.
If you’re a teacher, this will help you understand your students’ experience and, therefore, equip you to be better able to support them. In addition, it models one way of building phonological awareness and teaching phonics.
If you’re learning how to read and write, it will give you valuable methods you can use to systematically improve your literacy skills.
You can see how important it is to be systematic, explicit, and cumulative in your teaching and learning. BUT these brief lessons aren’t sufficient - how do you feel? What do you still need in order to master this writing system and become a strong and confident reader and writer?
