18 men out of 270 men. That voyage was really a doomed one that somehow succeeded by skin of the remaining crews teeth. These risk takers and adventurers became history.
yes, Pigaffeta ( an Italian who took part in the travel )wrote down that those survivors had surpassed Jason and the Argonauts
magellan: has 60 men
lapu lapu: what thats it? *1,500 3,000 men show up*
Woulda been better if they left religious pandering out of it and left the natives alone..
Another 17 from the expedition would make it home through Portuguese captivity. 12 who were captured on Cape Verde and 5 survivors of the Trinidad.
Dan Carlin said the kind of person that would go on those voyages was someone who would play Russian Roulette for a big payout.
You should've mention that the Spanish captain Juan Sebastian Elcano was the real hero of the circumnavigation of the world, Magellan completed only half way around the globe because he was killed in the Philippines. Elcano took command of the only ship left "the Victoria" and returned to Spain with a small crew of sailors in 1522.
Don't forget, the narrator is from the Perfidious Albion.
@@bconni2 It was an Spanish Enterprize as well all Columbus Voyages. You are a liar. And Basque were part of Spain, not independent. Duhh !! Magellan was a liar. LIKE YOU ARE TOO.
"the real hero"? there would have been no expedition to begin with if it wasn't for Magellan as he was the visionary behind the entire venture. also, it was Magellan who crushed the mutiny off the coast of Argentina that would have ended the expedition. not saying it was easy for Elcano, but he mostly used existing Portuguese shipping lanes to get back to Europe were as Ferdinand led his men into uncharted waters never seen by Europeans at that time and named the Pacific ocean.. and don't forget, most of the nautical miles were sailed under Magellan's command. so you're gravely incorrect saying "Magellan completed only half way around the globe"
@@bconni2 Lots of lies from portugeese. Magellan never wanted to circumnavigate but to go to the malucas by going around the already discovered new world AND COME BACK THE SAME WAY TO AVOID PORTUGESE WARSHIPS in the Indian Ocean.
Spain going to the Indian Ocean could be a suicide mission and failure he declared.
He already knew there was an ocean on the other side of the new world as discovered 7 years before by the Spanish Explorer Vasco Nunez De Balboa when he crossed the Panama isthmo in 1512.
Portugese navy in Indian Ocean would capture him, trial him as a spy and traitor now sailing for spain, their rival.. AND HANG HIM. And steal the ships too.
IT WAS DELCANO WHO DECIDED not to go back the big pacific ocean way and take the risk of circumnavigating instead but he decided to navigate south of navigation routes of portugeese. It worked.
MAGELLAN WAS A LIAR AND A MURDERER OF GOOD CAPTAINS that demanded right navigation rules in Argentina. He lied again when he declared the 2 Spanish captains as mutiny. Big dam liiar then ordered the portugeese in his ships to attack and kill them. You were lied and fooled by the dirty portugeese..
@@bconni2 You are a liar. The way magellan wanted was to go back the same way. He lied of the size of the pacific ocean. He was 1,000% wrong. Im a pilot teacher. If Delcano didnt decide to circle the globe instead of going back to pacific ocean and then go south to the tip of long South America and then up north again, they could die doing that. SO MAGELLAN BS AND LIES were rejected by the Spanish and they completed it. Im a pilot teacher.
0:35 Magellan did NOT die in the Marianas islands (Guam, Tinian, Saipan etc.), he died in Cebu, in the Philippines.
16:20 Guam is in the Marianas islands and today they are still known as the Marianas. When they left Guam, they left the Marianas and headed to the Philippines - over 2,000 km from the Marianas.

Do you ever stop to think about the history that's lost? Imagine the historical knowledge that's been lost, omitted or undocumented not just in a regional or cultural context but in a human legacy aspect. Some things we will never know.
Shawnaldo75 agree and I believe that there were continents, lost civilizations according what l read there were kingdoms and no savage at contrary I saw a program in Puerto Rico that this man claimed that Atlantic the lost continent was located in today Atlantic Ocean. Also the ancients Greeks know about them and their gods name Zeus Jupiter Minerva and Athens the goddess of war were the names of the monarchs of Atlantic. India all the Americas from Alaska to Argentina were civilizations the Spaniards destroy so much history of ancient Mexico Azteca Maya’s who has acknowledged of astronomy’s and farms and use gold for ornaments the most that cause the conquest. The Spaniards were Catholics medieval and they think 🤔 that anything’s contrary to their faith was evil 👿. I do not try to blame the Catholic Church destroy everything all religions believe that others ideas contrary to their own were evil among them India Islam Judaism and other primitive faith including pagans.
I know everything. Im just not gonna tell you though. But if you buy my book for $49.99, you can have all the answers.
@@JudithSanchez-ht6jn lol pagans were not primitive faith.
Who make the firts cock joke?
Pigafetta was the one who records everything during the voyage. Every exploration had someone responsible in writing down everything. This was a very expensive exploration, it was expected for Spain to implement a recording system.
LapuLapu, while sitting meters away from the battle: "See that dude? Bring me his head."
Would have been helpful if there was a visual map that covers the progress of the story. Just saying, hard to visualize the name of places that Ive never seen or heard before lol

Thoroughly enjoyed the video. One criticism though. After Magellan was killed it was Sebastian Elcano who led the Victoria home and completed the circumnavigation. Despite the loss of four ships the expedition was a commercial success and Elcano became famous in his time. I thought he would be worthy of mention even though this video is not about him.
I'm a Filipino and as a kid I never got the impression of Magellan's death being tragic. In our history books Lapu-Lapu is regarded as a hero maybe that's why. It's interesting to hear this battle from another side.
Thanks for the view we don't usually hear.
Well our history books are bias and one sided
he was a colonizer, and the worst kind at that. if it werent for his death spain wouldve exterminated the entirety of the natives in the philiphines like they did with the natives of south america. Lapu Lapu was a hero and one of the reasons why the pinoy language and culture are still practiced till today.
The Phillipines was Spanish colony. So it´s not true.
@@western1010 What is not true?
16:26 Since when was the Philippines referred to as the Marianas Islands? Doesn't that name refer to the archipelago Guam belongs in?
100% correct! (I've been to both places)
I live in the Philippines and Its probably a misunderstanding since when there's a bad Asian stereotype we call ourselves Pacific islanders and vice versa hahaha
@Jason Bouphasavanh the Philippines is the most western country in probably South-east Asia and East Asia too. Almost all people here understand and watch American movies... And in american movies the asian guy has small eyes which is not a common trait in Filipinos... American movies also differentiate the indian and middle Eastern guys so Filipinos might think that asians specifically refers to East Asians. (And we look more like mexicans and have mostly American first name and Spanish surnames)
@Jason Bouphasavanh I'm Filipino and I would describe myself as Malayan Descent. Asian term was already used to refer the people living in Central Asia. No need to include ourselves with the word since our physical features have a lot of difference.

I love how you present history! Great job, can't wait to binge your channel!
This channel gives me motivation to become someone notable to history, that Ill eventually have my life narrated by Simon
Same for me, although I'm not sure which fate I will have. A swimmer? A soldier? A film director? Life is full of choices.
Absolutely brilliant hosting and narration on a necessary subject. Subscribed!
Kind of obvious question but don't know the answer... when the explorers were in the open ocean why didn't they fish for food?
You have blown my mind.
Maybe forgot their fishing gear at home.
@Valerie Mc Phail Not sure if you're being serious or not so I'll throw you a like
Most fishing is near coasts.
When moving the fishing tackle will rise to the surface, you'd have to stop, drop weighted lines and start moving again, slowing the voyage I suppose, but there are flying fish, if you're lucky they'll jump into the boat. :-D
In Philippines, Lapu-Lapu regarded as the first ever hero, the first one to resist colonial rule and won. We named an island after him, have a 40 ft statue in his honor called "Sentinel of Freedom", even have a fish in his name lol. Would be fun to have a counter Biographic of Lapu-Lapu himself to see the two sides of history.
LapuLapu cannot be the first Philipines hero because the Filipinas were created by Spain who brought together all islands and named them after King Felipe the 2nd of Spain.
Also, there's no biography of LapuLapu. We know he existed thanks to Spanish accounts. His figure has been recently made up by US and China propaganda to end 300+ years of Spanish legacy.
And two contrasting viewpoints that doesn't rely on a black and white view on conflict
@@makot00 He was probably dead by then. Magellan arrived in 1521. Philippines fell under Spanish colony at 1565.
@@cuacomekikiwhat were they called before Spanish influence? Or were they just individual islands
@@struck.kobe1999 as far I am concerned, islands did not have a status of stablished branded lands; their form of government was not that sophisticated, as they were territories / tribes in a series of wars among them. I believe they didn't have maps either that stablished a formal border.

@@balagadagesports8758 Stfu
@Hellenistic Helmet Hmm that isn't really evidence that suggests the Mactan natives were cannibals. Just because a group did one thing, doesn't automatically mean that another did the same thing (just because the Spaniards fed their sick with the dead doesn't mean that Lapu Lapu's tribe, which by the way doesn't seem to haveany relation to the situation at all, did the same thing. Although there are some tribes in the Philippines that do practice cannibalism, I have never heard of claims that suggest the Cebaunos parcticed it too.

Great video man! I was wondering if you could do a video on Woodie Guthrie sometime? He seemed like a pretty cool guy.

One plus one, Magellan.
Whacked by natives led by chieftain Lapu-lapu in the island of Mactan in Cebu,Philippines.
So if you're too successful as a pirate, you're upgraded to 'explorer', just like if you're too successful as a thief you're upgraded to banker, or of you're too successful as a gambler, youre upgraded to stockbroker?
This would be an amazing mini series
You do a fantastic job telling the stories! I read the book about 10 years ago and I recall a couple of interesting points. One, several of the officers were saved from scurvy due to the fact that they were eating a jar of quince jelly with some of their meals. It had just enough vitamin C to protect them. Another thing I remember was that The sailors were accustomed to fighting in armor, and this didn’t do too well in some of the battles in the surf as it weighed them down considerably. Again, great job.
Some other explorers you should perhaps considering covering on Biographics: Vasco Da Gama, Georg Wilhelm Steller, Vitus Jonassen Bering and Alexander von Humboldt.
I’m sure the crew members who made it back home had some great stories to tell. That was quite a voyage/adventure.
Malacca is not an island city. It is located at the Malay Peninsula
I love your vids. There are many that include ships exploring around history. It always makes me wonder, who other than governments, could own or build a ship in these times and the class systems of the societies who owned these boats during these times
When will you an biography on a dutch person? Would love to see that!! Love your vids! Keep this going 😀👌
Hans Lippershey would be great
If his name is Ferdinand Magellan you are called Simao Assobiador
Hahhahahaahah boa :D
His name was Fernando Magallanes, he changed his name and renounced to Portuguese citizenship and became Spanish after Portuguese kings insulted him, and he came to Spain. This is well documented. So the oficial name is Fernando Magallanes, and he was officially Spanish.
@@Yosoyosoy -- He was Spanish by choice. Same as Columbus and Amerigo Vespucci. All those famous men were born outside Spain, BUT THEY PREFERRED TO BE FROM SPAIN. Italy Genoa and Portugal were rejected by them. They were Spanish by choice.. they said.
@@feetgoaroundfullflapsC Your nationality does not depend on where you're born at.
@@Yosoyosoy Wrong. His name was FERNANDO MAGALHÃES, and then he renounced his Portuguese citizenship, and then he became Fernando Magallanes, but actually you are all wrong: as the name of Christopher Columbus demonstrates (Cristóvão Colombo, in my native Portuguese; Cristóforo Colombo in Italian; Cristóbal Colón in Spanish, and so it goes), in the day of Sail the translation of proper names was considered, you know, proper, much the same as today it most definitely isn't. Also, have you tried to get an anglophone to say "Magalhães"? Jesus: don't.
And we treat Lapu-Lapu as a hero as if he had a great achievement, this is quite the new perspective. Seems more believable and legit to what they teach at school.
Yes
I've noticed an error in what you said about Megellan. He didn't die in the Mariana Islands, he died in the Philippines.
Correct if I am wrong Philippines still part of Mariana Island. If the author did not mention the specific location but I think he knows it.
Nice documentary dude, listen u should really make a documentary about the loaisa expedition (it is really interesting).
Another great video!! Can you do something about Robert McNamara? His participation in WWII and Vietnam is worth talking about.
Watch The Fog of War, an Errol Morris documentary on McNamara that included Robert Strange McNamara's participation reflecting on his life. I've found it free on RUclips in the past.
Great video Simon, a few errors however, some mentioned by others , one I saw being at 15:08 it wasn't 1529 it was 1520.
Juan Sebastián de Elcano was the Spanish explorer and navigator whose expedition completed the first circumnavigation of the globe
You never said what happened to the slave, Enrique. I guess I have to do some research now.
The ultimate fate of Enrique is unknown. Magellan had asked for Enrique to be freed upon his death. After Magellan died on Cebu on 27 April 1521, Enrique is said to have left the island on May 1st, probably with the intention to return to his home island Malacca, 4,000 km west of Cebu. It is not known whether he made it. If he succeeded, Enrique would have been the very first person to completely circumnavigate the Earth and return to his starting point.
@@renerpho Thanx 👍
U must know his original name panglima awang ... After u do some research pls come here with conclusion
Because one of the theory is being that Enrique back to malacca converted back to muslim and which means he is the first man to sail all around the world .. and there's a reason why Ferdinand keep Awang(Enrique) and sell all of the malays slave in GOA but not Awang.. it is because they used him as guidance to sail he is master of reading the star ...and some people say because of Awang Ferdinand decided to sail the world .. and like we all knew the original plan is not to sail around the world
Portugal is a male not a female in their Romance language. All other Western European countries are females except for Wales. Wales is a male too!

Can you cover Vasco Da Gama some time?
I read a book stating that in 1511, Magellan was lost and arrived to a far-flung island(maybe an island in Visayas or mainland Luzon), there he met Enrique and brought him to the Spice Islands where Portuguese ships were docked.
3:04 Never expected my hometown to be the site of a world famous battle! :D

It was weird to see Portugal adressed as a "she" though, I thing every latin language considers it male.
@@rubensousa9216 I actually have seen it referred too as both 'he' and 'she', i guess with that name its easy to adress it in both ways
King Manuei I was not King John II's brother. They were actually first cousins and brothers in law.
Brother to queen Leonor, 2nd wife of king João II. Becoming king because all the other heirs were either death, priests or women. What a Venturoso.
Sir Francis Drake, Vasco da Gama, Hernando Cortez, Montezuma, and Francisco Coronado.
Can you do a couple of videos on cinema pioneers ? Like Max linder, Fatty arbuckle, Douglas Fairbanks ... etc
I'll add Fritz Lang, Charles Chaplin, the Lumiere brothers.
In the video, there was a point where it says 1529 - but I think it should be 1520 since they arrived in the PH in 1521.
I think you should also get other sources for this. This one seems...dated(?) compared to your other vids with much nuance. The last part in the PH seems a bit one-sided. PH history books tell a different picture. It seems that Magellan didn't understand the power dynamics of the islands (which is not surprising). Humabon is called "Rajah" while Lapu-Lapu is often considered as a "Datu" - which makes Lapu-Lapu a local leader rebelling against the rajah's hegemony of power in the area - at least with his particular policy of accepting the foreign invaders. There's also not much evidence that Humabon was the one who gave "intel" that they were fighting few natives. Instead, Magellan is portrayed as (too) confident that he didn't even call upon Humabon's help in subduing Lapu-Lapu. It is highly possible that he just didn't know the number of Lapu-Lapu's men.
Humabon's (poisoned) feast for the survivors is interesting. One could say that he suddenly had no "use" for his foreign allies after they were defeated by his rival Lapu-Lapu. Humabon could've viewed the invaders as mere tools or friends only when useful. Enrique (Magellan's slave) is also suspected as a traitor by one of the survivors of the poisoning - as Enrique quickly seemed to be on the side of the natives and unharmed.
How come there was no reply from BioGraphics about the mistake on the date? The Philippines is never part of the Marianas Island or ever called the Marianas Island.
an interesting bio about a great man.
Idk about the great man part but definitely interesting
I’m still amazed they found Guam.

STRIKE ONE: the credibility of this channel has taken a huge hit when it said that Magellan was hacked to death by natives of the MARIANAS Islands... hey, do your research please; he died on the shores of Mactan Island in the Philippines.
STRIKE TWO: the Italians did not shut out the Portuguese in trade and commerce with Asia; Venice and Genoa were way ahead in the game and controlled the European end of that trade and commerce. the Portuguese were the ones who shut out the Venetians by precisely finding a sea route around the southern tip of Africa to Goa and, at come point, Malacca... you got your chronology wrong.
STRIKE THREE: Magellan bought Enrique as a slave in Malacca (not really an island but a trading port); he brought back Enrique to Portugal with him on his return, and then took him on his westerly course under the Spanish flag to search for the Spice Islands from that end, not to act as an interpreter "in his return to the Indian Ocean"!!!
STRIKE FOUR: the Philippines was NEVER part of the Marianas Islands!!!
So you mentioned his slave Enrique but you don't mention that he actually survived the entire voyage and was one of the 18 survivors ?.............
Can you make a video about Miguel Lopez de Legazpi?
Did you actually do your research???Magellan was killed in the Island of Mactan (part of the Philippine Archipelago) by Datu Lapulapu a minor king. The Marianas is the group of composed of Guam, Tinian, Rota and Saipan. Magellan landed there but he wasn't killed there!!!! He in fact named it Ladrones Islands or Islands of thieves.
