A Truly excellent list, with _CIty of the Dead, Blood on Satan's Claw, The Wicker Man_ and _Apostle_ being among my favorites. Two movies that could have made the list (though they were set in more modern times) but still dealt with the Occult and Witchcraft with a touch of Folk influence were the British Horror classics _The Night of the Demon (1958)_ and _Burn Witch Burn (1962)._ Thanks again, enjoyed this very much.
Bless you for including and give a recommendation for Mandy - it was my best film of that year - I know so few people who have seen it and they bloody well should. A fantastic film - to look at and listen to as well. How I wish I had seen it on the big screen. The scene where Linus Roache and Andrea Risebrough's faces seen to meld together just blows my mind - and Cage is perfect in this. Love the King Crimson intro as well. Thanks
Excellent selection including some I havent seen. A bit left field because its a childrens tv series made in England in 1969 and transmitted as several episodes is the adaptation of Alan Garners "The Owl Service". It is too put it mildly an extraordinary early evening show made for kids and it has the most singular, dark and baffling atmosphere. It has the pacing flaws of period tv but it is unlike anything else and genuinely haunting. I see its on RUclips.
I meant to add that I hope The Witch is on the list and lo and behold - there it is. That freaked me out - truly scary and few movies really frighten me - this one did. The scene at the end where Black Phillip tells the girl to look at the book on the table and he walks past her - bloody hell. Another great British occult/horror that will fill you with dread is the brilliant Kill List - a movie you think is going one way but then doesn't - it's actually worse. The movie keeps you off balance as nothing feels right - and there's a reason for that, trust me.
Lordy, Kill List is fantastic!! I keep forcing it on my brother, because I know he'd Love it if he'd take the time to watch it. It's so eerie, and just... Upsetting!😦🖤
Really enjoyed your list. It had a lot of interesting titles, not just the 'usual suspects' of most folk horror lists. Regarding occult films, have you seen "A Dark Song"?
Thanks for watching! I have seen A Dark Song. I wanted to like it given my interests but it just didn't sit right with me. Maybe it's my interest in the occult (I don't really see it the way they present it in the film). Maybe I didn't like some of the acting. I'm not sure. It was shot well though.
I can't say enough about the detail orientation of eggers I've been a historical reeinactor for over 30 years now and his extreme of historic accuracy is amazing. this is how period films should be made. I have high hopes for nosferatu..now if he would make a movie about the druids..I'd b a kid in a candy store...
Amazing list--I vote the 'Wicker Man' No. One, myself. I saw it when it came out (yeah, I'm an old Baby Boomer)--and was quite horrified! LOL! (Scariest, tho, at the time was "Suspiria"!) Your channel is intelligent and extremely worth-watching. Thanks for your insight and thoughtfulness! I still love being scared to death--and now have a great list to look forward to!! Lynn in NYC
I appreciate that! I'm glad you're still finding ways to get scared. Suspiria is also one of my favorites. Might do a witch horror video at some point.
Yes, you're right. I've read the Golden Bough. Midsommar didn't fail in that department. I think it failed in execution and originality. Much of it came off as silly and not scary to me. I think the Wicker Man does it much better.
i love the wicker man 1973, midsommar was such a disappointment. it was like lets stick some sheds in a field and try and give it a wicker man vibe. a film has to have the suspension of disbelief. midsommar just didnt. the set looked like it had been knocked up in a couple of days.
Someone else mentioned Kill List. Yes, it could be on this. I think Mandy bridges several genres, but because of the cultist element I included it here. I do have a Top 10 Cosmic Horror Films video. Thanks for watching!

Nice folk horror list. There was a couple I haven’t seen so thanks. I also like these: Red State. Chis Cooper is awesome in it. Eye of the Devil. My favorite Sharon Tate movie. And Hereditary with Gabriel Burn. I found that movie semi unsettling.
Ok so I'm confused ..dealing with folk horror and u brought up psycho ??? Not a film I would consider a folk horror film ..u said precursor to the wickerman and psycho ??? Please explain.
When I mentioned Psycho I didn't mean precursor as folk horror. I meant more the unexpected plot twists that occur in both films, which are equally horrific and startling.
There was an old horror movie from the 70's or maybe earlier, i remember since i was a kid that had one scene that stuck in my head and I cannot find out the movie. There was a scene with a woman, maybe a witch, she had a white face, hair and a gown or dress, something...it was a night scene with fog and i think a forest too and for some reason that one scene stuck with me to this day and I could never find out what movie that was...maybe it was something real... IDK
'Layer of the White Worm' is definitely not about Vampirism, but about the antagonist, Lady Sylvia, who is an immortal priestess to the ancient snake god, Dionin. Her teeth that are seen are her snake fangs, and she emits venom, even spits venom, like Cobras and other deadly snakes. Once bitten, the victims become snake-like, and have fangs and poison as well. Even the giant snake appears in the end to indirectly save the day! Oh, and it has a few actors that went on to great careers, like Hugh Grant, and one of the most recent actors to play Dr. Who! Great review video, btw! 🐺
Yes, you are correct about White Worm. I use the term "vampirism" loosely because I wasn't sure how to explain the film succinctly without giving too much away. She also leans into "siren" territory as well. Thanks for watching!
I agree, Lucifer Rising, and it's companion film Invocation of my Demon Brother, by Kenneth Anger, is more of an art film than a horror film (there is no dialougue, only music, so it's almost a silent film as well.) Besides Jimmy Page and Marianne Faithfull, it starred Bill Wyman of the Rolling Stones as well. The Devils is also amazing, and Vanessa Redgrave is incredible in it. The best film about cults is Ticket To Heaven, which you did not mention. It starred Nick Mancuso as the cult victim and R.H. Thomson as his brainwash deprogrammer, and it was released in 1981. It was terrifying. Undoubtedly, the best film about cults. Rosemary's Baby is a nearly perfect film. The Wicker Man, from 1973 with Christopher Lee, is my favorite too. It would be my #1 film as well. My favorite edit is the longest edit which begins with Sgt. Howie seeing the graffitti "Jesus saves" and then getting the letter in the police station. My least favorite edit is the one that cuts the Gently Johnny scene and song out which, to me, is an absolutely necessary scene. I do not think people should watch the Nicholas Cage remake. Only watch the original. I have not seen the others on this list.
I will take a look at Ticket to Heaven. I agree that Anger's films can be seen as art films, but if one knows the symbols/meanings behind the images (Thelema, etc), I'd say they're more occult than anything I have on this list. In hindsight, I probably should have made two lists: occult and folk horror separate. Anyway, thanks for the watch!
Disagree with Midsommar being a silly film, but agree with a lot of his picks. Have a look at a kids program from the mid 80's, called "The Magic Box". I watched for the first time in almost four decades, and shocked at the folkloric, occult and pagan references in it. Even has "Hern the Hunter" in it. This was out around Christmas time, 1987ish
Tremendous list. I just discovered your channel a few minutes ago. I am a huge folk horror fan and have seen all of these as well as the documentary. I agree with all that you have said. I agree with you about Missionary although that is a minority opinion. Well done video.
Just discovered your channel, and two minutes into this video, I subscribed. Excellent taste, and excellent work, I’m looking forward to watching all of your other videos. Your inclusion of Kenneth Anger’s “Lucifer Rising”, and you properly pronouncing Crowley goes a long way in my estimation of you! You seem to be pretty well-versed in your knowledge of these subjects, and your tastes seem very in line with my own. Thank you for this excellent video, and great selection of movies. I wish you tons of success with your channel!
I don't do horror movies anymore because studying the occult is much crazier, but I believe it is important to understand who these people are and their beliefs as they have made it a world wide religion nobody knows they are a part of like the burning man, they didn't even rebrand it and people still don't get it. Great picks, some I have never heard of, thanks for the leads.
I've heard that. I didn't really care for Witchfinder that much, although I adore Vincent Price. I did see it years ago so maybe I should give it a second chance.
I have always loved horror. I started reading and watching it from a very young age. More recently I’ve been leaning into folk horror a lot.The Apostle was a big surprise. I did not expect that to be as great as it is. I have to watch Mandy again. The first time through it there were just some scenes that were too slow. I like a slow burn if it has a good payoff, which Mandy does but there were a lot of scenes with people walking or driving down that road that just went on too long for me but that could have just been a mood I was in or something. Will surely give it another watch. Rosemary’s Baby just never hit with me. I saw it the first time when I was around 12 and it just didn’t scare me at all. It all seemed really telegraphed even then
nice video🙂I recommend in fabric (2018), martyrs, noroi the curse, the black door (2006), wishmaster, werewolf tv series (1987), perdurabo (short film, 2003), the conspiracy (2013), etc. if I remember more i'll write them, i saw almost all every movie in the video but when i watched Mandy i felt that i already saw it, look like others like house of 1000 corpses and the same sub-genre of films like funny games from Haneke, movies like you're next, or the invitation... one of my favorites is the ninht gate 🙂i lost its 1st dvd version from artisan, i buyied in year 2000 at best buy 🥺
Actually I have Eyes of Fire on my "Top 10 Underappreciated Horror Films for Halloween" video. It is certainly an underrated indie folk horror film, and quite interesting too.

Just me I guess folk horror is based even losely on real religions ..witchcraft..Satanism, druidry .. ect . I don't mean to start a war here but .. hp Lovecraft fictional EVERYTHING is not that ...a cult of worshipers based on nothing in history I'm aware of ...giant octopus ppl is not something I remember ever hearing about. A fictional cult paying homage to gods that only exsist in the wrighters mind ...is not folklore that's fantasy... for me the elements of realism behind folk Horry makes it scary ...one could argue that the deities in other belief systems were made up as well , but I'm not debating their exsistance or not ..ppl believed they were .. Noone ever thought Lovecrafts characters did ..all horror movies on some level are based in folklore but not all are considered ( folk horror ) vampires and werewolves are based in folk lore yet lack other elements that define this gener. The undead in any form is based on folk lore to know one would call the walking dead a folk horror series .. if u have unknown or at least unconfirmed creatures this to me is more syfy fantasy..
I didn't like the Witch so much. I thought the design was fantastic and the acting as well but I just felt like the writing really missed something. And that scene with the lady in the forest was a bit over the top.
Totally in the minority with you. Loved Wicker Man, really loved the Apostle and felt it was pretty amazing and quite underrated, and felt Midsommer was frustrating and a bit corny and just underwhelming, especially if we compare it to the other two. I even watched it three times to give it more than one chance due to all the hype to see if I was missing something, but nope
Wicker man is fantastic. I also liked the remake with Cage even though most people hated it. And Midsommar except for a good lead actress was really just a shell of a movie, with a totally innecessary backstory with those dead parents and the weak portrayal of a boyfriend (as if boys are really that oppressive and united in each others relationships - just way too fictional). I thought it was very weak. Looked much too good for what it was, especially since the beginning of the movie was so startling and nothing really set out from that.
With the parents dying it was supposed to be like the cosmos setting a diabolical chain of events into motion. That was the point. The whole thing had an implicit supernatural drive.
Good list. Deserved omission and criticism of Midsomer which is a lazy derivative modern example of plagarism and nothing else against a backdrop of masterpieces across all ages.
I seriously disliked the VVitch because it was so unbelievable. It centers on a family of settlers who are exiled from their own community of very religious exiles, presumably due to some degree of perceived heresy. Despite this exile, there is no way that the settlers would not have given them aid when they began to experience problems - historical inaccuracy number one. Also, even if the community *was* hard hearted enough to deny the adults aid, the children were innocent. It is therefore very unlikely that a Christian community would not take the children in, and they would probably not have exiled them with their parents in the first place - historical inaccuracy number two. It also includes an actual coven of Satanic witches living in the forest, when there is no record or even mythology about this in 1600s America - historical inaccuracy number 3. However, what really pisses me off is that it panders to the C17th witch craze narrative that caused hundreds of thousands of deaths by torture, which I find horrible. It's the equivalent of making a horror film with Jews as the folk monsters, based on the entire antisemitic mythology of the last 2,000 years. I can't see why people don't see this. Ther's been a massive revival of the Satanic witch trope in the horror genre and it's utterly sickening. People died due to this crap, and they still die because of it in some parts of the world. Let's not applaud its revival.

Panos casmotos. Is. My hero
He is awesome.
I'm with you: Midsomar was a snore fest. Badly written. Wicker Man is unsurpassed.
For sure.
the L is silent!
Great video, thanks! It's reassuring to know I'm not the only one who thought Midsommar was silly and annoying.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I agree concerning Midsommer. It was very underwhelming.
Mandy is a stupid movie
I respectfully disagree.
Lucifer Rising is supposedly a spell and is probably the most occult thing ive seen on film.
On film.
For sure...
You bring up some good points.
