Thanks much. That is a big help. I've got kinda the same problem. Fines are too fine, mediums are too fat. Nice to know that the 743 and 823 nibs are swappable.
I have a fine 823, and medium 742. Really wanted something in between, because the Pilot medium is much broader than a German fine, in my experience as well. So, I ordered the 743 in a medium fine, I was sent a pen, in a box labeled MF - but the pen in the box has an FA nib. So disappointed, I was so excited to get the medium fine. Now I have to send the FA back…or maybe not, because I kind of like it. By the way, Yoseka Stationary has the 743 with the entire range of nib sizes.
I can confirm this, I had bought a Pilot kushi in sterling silver in medium. Than the shock, the japanese medium was broader than a european medium. I asked Pilot to swap to an fine nib, had to wait several months and I had to pay 150 euros. 100euro for the f nib and 50 euros for the handling. Now Im satisfied. The same with a sailor pro gear in medium, now Im selling the sailor and bought a EF.
I'm happy you found a solution. Interestingly, I just purchased a Platinum Century 3776. After much research, I purchased one with a medium nib. I love it. The medium in the Century is very similar to the Pilot FM.
@@russellveldman6412 A Platinum Century 3776 is also on my list. Im only not sure if I should take a F or even e EF. I afraid that if I take a medium it could write broader and then I would need to sell it. If it turns out to be very thin I could let it grind to a monoline and the it would write a little broader and that could be fine or still to thin. In the end it is a numbers game, some folks get nice nibs from the beguinning and other people have only complains. I hope Im lucky ;-)
Thank you! I’ve been wondering about the FM nib. I have been wanting to get a Pilot 823 or a 743 for a long time but wasn’t sure about which nib! From my experience of trying out Pilot pens, is exactly what you mentioned about the fine and medium. Since the FM is not as common there are very few videos about it! So I’m glad I stumbled upon yours. It looks like I may be more happy with a FM nib.
Very interesting. I really like Pilot and Pelikan nibs. Since Pilot offers such a wide nib sizes and if, like me, haven't gone to a pen show where to try each one, is a guess! I'm grateful you do use your pens and it is not about marketing. Enjoy them, wish you could make videos same pens, different inks, different papers to really get to know them both. It surprises me the comparisons between different pens, with similar nib sizes and same ink. Thank you🎉
nice video Russel. This video has saved me s 240 dollar mistake. thank you sincerely. since you have tried the F, FM, and m,, I have a Q if you don't mind. In smoothness, how much the FM differ from the M ? is it a drastic difference? or as smooth as the M?
I find the FM to be very smooth. The M feels very wet on high quality paper. I could not tell any difference in smoothness between the two nibs. Both are wonderful.
