  • Seventh video initiating novice or home machinists to jig and fixture design. Jigs and fixtures are simple and effective tools that can increase productivity in the home shop when identical multiple parts must be produced. More specifically, this video looks at machining a plate jig using a shaper, a drill press and a round column mill. Increase part accuracy and increase the rate of production while using existing tools, why not!!! As for all THATLAZYMACHINIST videos, this video is produced for novice , garage or beginner machinists. You can find all my videos as well as project drawings and course notes on my website THATLAZYMACHINIST.COM

Thanks for understanding that I am a professional toolmaker and teacher but I am not a professional video producer (and it shows). I produce these videos for fun as a little retirement project that lets me give back a little of what was passed on to me by so many amazing trades people most of whom, sadly, are no longer with us. This is the best machinists channel on RUclips. There are many good channels that show you what to do but this is the only channel I've come across that combines the procedure with the fundamentals to the degree you do. Your students are fortunate and I count myself among them.

Thanks again for the great video. As a "senior" I have learned a lot from your videos. Machining is a new trade for me and even though I will never work in the field (I'm retired) I find the knowledge from you to be so valuable. Keep up these great videos please.

Marc I love the commentary while you are working on the machines. You likely do not realize how much information you pass on in your videos. I always learn something new (and usually it is unexpected) from your lessens. You have years of work experience that you take for granted, but thankfully you share the tips developed over your career while you are demonstrating the current project. Thank you!

Good bit of training here Marc, I can't remember how many re-does I have made before I understand the benefit of the jig. Well done, bon sante!

I have a special request if I may, wondering if you might be able to do a quick video on techniques for accurately positioning a hole on a milling machine Locating and positioning challenge, I'm looking to make some jigs and fixtures. I cant find very many good videos on this subject or on best practices and would love to know your thoughts on best practices and techniques and your thoughts on expectations of different techniques regarding best practices and techniques. I'm thinking things like using a spotting drill, vs center drill vs, maybe boring vs who knows starting with an endmill. Got to be a best practice out there shoot for tightest tolerances that can be made say for .75 inches center to center(emphasis on Accurate locating position of holes). best technique wins kinda thing. or comparison to see what is the best practice or how to get the tightest tolerances. ;) appreciate your videos and experiences.

If you were going to have to use the 4 jaw chuck anyway, why start with 3 jaw and then go to 4 jaw instead of doing the whole job in the 4 jaw. Thanks for the learning.

Hmmm, I have accurate 0.500" & 0.250" pins as well as the same sizes of reamers plus special quenching oil, but I don't have a parting tool.

Hi Robert, I just felt like showing an alternative method. It was a good opportunity to explain the importance of maintaining good reference surfaces. Thanks for watching and for taking the time to write. P.S. I get the second degree humor, it's not what you you ay but how you say (or write) it that counts. You made me chuckle, thanks.
