- One of the Dukes favorite roles, Captain Nathan Brittles. My favorite of John Ford's Cavalry trilogy. Take my word for it, go look for She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, you won't regret it.

A terrific movie with John Wayne playing to perfection. What I really love about these John Ford movies in this case particularly the cavalry ones. Is the characterisation. Ben Johnson, Victor McLaglan, Pedro Arminderes and the rest. It just adds so much depth to the film and the characters are more real, faults, humour and all than anything youll see in a modern westerns, perhaps in any modern movie. The use of colours especially monument valley is breath taking.
You are absolutely right! Movies like this will never be made again. It was definitely the Golden Age of cinema.
He always found parts for his friends in his movies, so that they could work steadily. He always looked after his friends, namely the ones you mentioned above. "Quincanon" was hilarious and reflected the Irish sense of humor. They had no problem poking fun at themselves or playing to stereotypes. We could use some of that humor these days. Everybody is so damn sensitive and easily offended.
No Pedro in this one.
John Wayne was and will always be one of our greatest actors of all time he will be truly missed
This is, perhaps, the finest piece of acting John Wayne ever did. John Ford was a genius as he captured the spirit of the late XIX century perfectly. Men were strong, resilient and stoic because that was expected from them.
yes, this scene was exquisite.
Lest We Forget. These Old Film's we're the one's Our parents were raised on, by such Actor's as Gene Autrey, Hop A Long Cassidy, The Cisco Kid, and many Others only under different Title's or aka similar Name. My point is the Lesson's we're the thing Back in those bygone Day's. Thank You for Sharing these Great Memories. 👍🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏👍🤔🤔
14 year's since my dad past .thank you for the memories sir!❤
The passing of the torch.....as old as armies and as honoarable. That last salute says it all:
" I got this sir. You taught me well"
The "Duke" . . . an ICON. A true hero to Americans and our values.
Lord, I miss him.
a movie scene that brings tears to my eyes since i was a kid. good luck C-Troop !!!!
John Wayne and John Ford and Monument Valley, a golden combination.
We just visited this place on our road trip by accident and it said “John Wayne’s Cabin” and we walked in a and it had some information about She wore a yellow ribbon. Had to look it up on RUclips! Very cool!
I love this movie..always have and always will. All the actors are perfectly cast..plenty of action and wit. Never get fed up watching it. Even have the title tune in my music library along with Gary Owen. Great.
The Blu-ray transfer is even better. It looks gorgeous.
I got this on Blu-Ray for my dad on Father's Day this year. I'm giving him that and a homemade card with John Wayne.
That final salute still gets emotional for me every time I see it.😢
I'm not crying. I want to stand up and cheer!
I am amazed at the quality of the film and the color in our age of high definition.
Technicolor was an amazing bit of film technology.
Possibly one of the best movies ever made, certainly in my top 10.
My favorite movie. LONG LIVE THE DUKE.
The end of this passage is a part of genius… a representative emotion of the public showing this beautiful movie…
Hola amigos much love this
The Duke should have been nominated for an Oscar for this movie not "The Sands of Iwo Jima."
He did get one for True Grit, though.
Dammit. After spending years in Uncle Sam and signing Yellow Ribbon as a marching song and seeing this segment of the movie I have to shed a tear.. even still
*+coporal4*
That's okay, Dude! I'm always feeling the same while watching this movie . . .
LTC S.G. MC
Salute!🇺🇸
The song is *The Garyowen* , a Scottish Dance hall song.

After watching this scene a million times, I just realized that's a Medal of Honor he's wearing.
@@ISIO-George Wrong. It is the Medal of Honor. The GAR medal had a different topping. It had an eagle and cannons on top - this does not. This IS a Medal of Honor. Besides, the GAR medal would not have been worn by soldiers still on active duty. The MoH was the only medal the Army had at the time.
@@ISIO-George The ribbons are different, as well. The MoH has a box of blue with stars above the red and white stripes. The GAR has the flag shown as it is, with the blue box in correct relation to the stripes.
I grew up in the 2nd Cavalry as a young Trooper from Jan 1997 to March 2002
To me this is one of the greatest movies of all time.
I love this movie and this scene always brings a tear to my eye, I was in the US Army for over 22 years as a Cavalry Scout beside my sons and grandson my time in the Cavalry are my greatest achievement.
such a great film cant beat the the classics, a tribute to john wayne what a brilliant actor in all his films, rooster cogburn, true grit, green berets, the longest day,i,ve seen em all :-)
The Duke *loved* doing Rooster Cogburn, because he didn't have worry about how he looked or lose wait or put his hairpiece on. He could just show up as he was. Despite criticism, he still stood toe to toe against Henry Fonda, and even acting against Katherine Hepburn, he clearly stood out as the star. Loved his last line "Come see a fat old man sometime".😂😂😂🥰🥰🥰
Watched this (again) on INSP this last weekend...what a great movie...
Ford and the screenwriters got this movie right. Brittles was a 'undistinguished' captain with 40 years service. Like most captains post Civil War he was frozen in grade due to the small size of the Army and the regimental system of promotion. There were many captains in the US Army who were forced to retire due to lack of promotion opportunities.
There was some untruth to it, actually. You are correct about the system in place at the time. But I would submit that an officer with the Medal of Honor would most likely not have been stuck at this rank. Somehow, someone would have seen to it that he got to at least Lieutenant Colonel.
2:01
Damn Horse!!
He ties him up and the horse immediately undoes it! 😂
no, he was just scratching his face.
The Duke as Capt. Nathan Brittles is one of my favorite roles. Grand acting. He was the image of the great American.
My favorite scene: You should be ashamed of yourselves, seven men ganging up on one.
There was only six ma'am!
That is one fine "trailer" for "She Wore A Yellow Ribbon". Very well done! Thank you for posting.
I just finished watching this film for the first time and Wayne's performance is a fine one. He's an under-rated actor, maybe because he made so many films and his roles largely merged into a kind of 'John Wayne' persona in the public mind.
Numinous20111 Absolutely underrated. You often hear how John Wayne's range was limited and that he acted as "John Wayne" in his movies. However, if you experience his characters in The Quiet Man, Rio Bravo, The Searchers, Red River, and Ford's Cavalry Trilogy, they're all quite different portrayals.
Read Lots
I think you can legitimately criticize his " range "... but acting as John Wayne was good enough for me. He's the standard of what it means to be a real man, as far as Im concerned.
This is good one. But o me his best performance was in Rio Grande.
@@jodeanesullens6588 Yes, I loved that one. So many layers, a family destroyed in war by a man doing his duty and a son who grew up and joined his regiment to get to know the man. Then Maureen O'Hara show s up and up and you just know what's going to happen.😂 Victor McLachlan and Ben Johnson were in that one, too, and I loved the Sons of the Pioneers singing.
@@readlots9983 Yellow Ribbon 🎗️ and Rio Grande *are* part of the Trilogy. The last was Fort Apache.
Great film and John Wayne has a Medal of Honor!
Membership ribbon of the Grand Army of the Republic.
@@mrMoose-un9pt Nope. It is a Medal of Honor. The GAR medal has a different topping on it. The GAR top is an eagle and cannons. This is the Medal of Honor. Besides, a soldier on active duty would not wear a GAR medal. The MoH was the only medal the Army had at the time.
EXCELLENT FILM/EXCELLENT ALL STAR CAST!!! THE BEST!!!
"The Duke" at it's best! I'm a paratrooper but i honour what the guys in the tanks (The Cavallry) does! Best wishes!
One of the best movies ever made always in my top 5 along with Kong 33, Dambusters, Star Wars and Black Rain.
O melhor ator de western que já existiu .
I am proud of John Wayne 🇺🇸
Yes, you are right Great John Wayne
happy birthday Duke
If you watch at the end of the clip as Harry Carey Jr rides off his wearing a hat. However, as he waves to Miss Dru, no hat....!
Duke's Best Movie.
Filmed at Monument Valley. The headquarters building is still at Guildings lodge. We stayed there with a magnificent view of the valley
One of my all time favorite movies. John Fords direction and outstanding photography gives this picture a really nice feel. "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon". This is a highly recommended "Must View" movie. Great performances in this movie from John Wayne, Ben Johnson (has the best lines in the movie) and Victor McLaglen. Look for Paul Fix as a bad guy (uncredited). Part of the Ford's cavalry trilogy. along with Fort Apache and Rio Grande.
Also Harry Carey, Jr and John Agar... (Jerry Pournelle's neighbor, if you're a science fiction fan...)
I love the line where John Wayne rubs his own face in his own failure in a moment most men have but few acknowledge... and then Miss Dandridge says, "...I'm not crying... I want to stand up and cheer". Best line of the movie.
Also in this movie I fell in love with the Colonel's wife, played by Mildred Natwick. THAT is a proper woman. Never forgetting that she's a lady, but setting it aside when necessary to comfort a wounded trooper. Proudly making a _Confederate flag_ for a fallen comrade. And not competing with the men on being macho, but taking the responsibility to look after the children. A woman who loved and respected men for who we are.
@@Hiraghm Yes,! Was it Harry Carey or Ben Johnson who played Tyree and kept stealing horses to hide from the Law in ... Rio Grand ?
JOHN WAYNE HAD MORE NATURAL BORN TALENT IN ONE FINGER THAN ALL THE ACTORS AND ACTRESSES ALIVE TODAY!
In many of his movies John didn’t even have to act, he was just himself. This film is one of those movies. And it shows..
So true
Wayne looked good with facial hair. Gave him dignity. I don't know if this was intentional on the part of John Ford, but in this movie it's the first time that Brittles puts on glasses. Historically it seems to be a reference to George Washington's speech to his troops when they were about to stage a rebellion against the new country for lack of payment. At the end of the speech he read a letter from Congress and had to put on his reading glasses: “You will permit me to put on my spectacles, for I have not only grown gray but almost blind in the service of my country."
Should have won an Oscar for playing this part of a retiring Cavalry Officer. Captain Nathan Brittles. Part of John Fords Cavalry Trilogy. Rio Grande, Fort Apache, & this one She Wore a Yellow Ribbon. Another one which was not part of the Three was The Horse Soldiers Directed by John Ford to. Enjoy.
I would add: Rio Grande
The Duke! Made a great Calvary officer.
great film, great scene.
What a great movie
I just got Fort Apache...an instant favorite. Tryin to find "Yellow Ribbon" on blu-ray.
"Don't apologize its a sign of weakness"
Its funny that movies that the public like are the ones who never received an Oscar.
Wayne with gelasses!!!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
The mighty 2nd U.S. Cavalry.
I've begun introducing my wife to John Wayne's films. Most people think he did one film character, over and over and over. You know the line: "All he ever does is play John Wayne!" I've shown her "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" and "Angel and the Badman." Next up, "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon."
He's really at his best when the camera is in close, when you can see his face. You see what he's feeling or thinking. Well, that's acting, right?
His political beliefs get in the way of people watching what are genuinely great films with great performances. The thing is, I'm as liberal a Democrat as they come, but when we're talking about John Wayne, then we're not talking about Red State of Blue State - we're talking about America. Despite being a conservative and supporting Nixon in 1960, he had this to say about JFK winning: "I didn't vote for him but he's my president, and I hope he does a good job."
To me, that's patriotism in action. That's John Wayne.
Love your comment -- feel the same. I also like him because he made a point of employing people in his films who had difficulty getting acting work because of their age or some circumstance in their lives (like John Agar, who had difficulty getting work after his divorce from Shirley Temple).
Don't forget to show her "Red River." I think Nathan Brittles, though, may be my sentimental favorite. I remember how he would have to go "make his report" and go to his wife's grave and talk to her.
Mine, too. I’d expected Fort Apache to be better, since it was great, and had had Hank Fonda as co-star, but this is definitely better. Wayne just threw this picture across his broad shoulders, and carried it.
This was the clip @CBS News showed in its news segment on the death of Duke. It even got Roger Mudd a bit choked up.
+larry cox That scene chokes me up every time I see it. The other one that gets to me is where they are doing the burial service for "Trooper John Smith" who just happened to be a former Confederate Cavalry general. "A gallant Soldier and a Christian gentleman". Takes a few minutes for the screen to get unfuzzy.
I remember I was in New York, visiting my Grandma, when my brother came into the Living room and told me the news. He didn't do it in a nice way, same with when Elvis Presley died... Anyway, I was 17 at the time and I kind of went numb.😭😭 He'd always been my hero and I love to rewatch his movies today, even ones like Yellow Ribbon that I've seen a half dozen times.
yeah, lest we forget.
The best scene from the Duke's best movie.
"There's a ... sentiment on the back of it."
One of Wayne's finest roles....the retirement of Capt Brittles from his life in the Army.
They look so neat in a Place like that.
This film was released in 1949 and its quality is pristine the colors vivid and it has a plot and tells a story with narrative
Wtf happened to American movies? No woke political agendas no CGI explosions No gratuitous sex scenes, just quality storytelling from the great Ad.John Ford easily one of the greatest directors.
Amen to that.
Brittles put on his glasses when he said Farewell to his troops. So did George Washington when he said farewell to his officers at Fraunces Tavern.
john effin wayne !!! the duke !
I love it!
The country reaps the benefit of strong. proud men and women. Now the weak and miserable try to tear it down.
John Wayne...a 44.calibre man!
Lest we forget.
Is that what it said, I thought it said unless we forget.
immense!!
Grande film, grande scena, grande attore.
Vi muitos filmes deste grande Actor, e todos foram bons Filmes. Este sabia onde se metia.
Let us not forget "Horse Soldiers"
Awesome!
"you've got breath like a hot mince pie, beat's me where you hide it"
John Wayne was one of the best film actors ever. The reason some try to discredit him is two fold. One, he came up in films the hard way. No acting school or anything. He learned the craft so well by hard work, doing odd jobs on set even while acting. Talking to and listening to and being brow beaten by directors. other actors and crew. He came up the hard way and became the most known and beloved film icon ever and I think most of even the film school graduate people respected him deeply, many stuffy upper crust mentality snobs in society did not because Wayne did not care about someone's level of birth in society and would happily hire the son of a farmer or factory worker over a stuffy snob type. Second, Wayne never yielded on his politics and stuck to his guns but was not mean to people about it, leaving leftists very little to do but whine and cry about him.I disagreed with him about Vietnam. But totally agreed with him in general about his love of America and the constitution. One thing is for sure. If he was alive today he would be standing shoulder to shoulder with real Americans against the new world order and all this police state crap our government is doing to patriots and Christians and constitutionalists today. I wish he and Heston and a bunch of those guys were still around. Obama would have been tossed in one of his own FEMA camps and told to keep the change.
Thank you for sharing your comment:) I'm only 20 years old, I was raised on John Wayne and Charlton Heston movies, and I couldn't agree with you more. We sorely need some of those classic Patriots. But their legacies will never die, they live on in us. Now it's our turn to save our country. God bless America!
Katrina N
Good to see some kids are still raised on the good stuff. 😊
daniel heartfire people also discredit him because he never actually served despite always playing a macho man on screen
John Wayne played John Wayne, very much like most film actors of that period who played themselves. John Wayne was fine in westerns or other action films., but as a serious actor.............
I loved watching JW in westerns, as a kid. John Ford and John Wayne were a golden combination.
Why does everything have to be political? (especially in the US).
My reply to that is America is full of men who never served
sí, sabría que hoy 20 de marzo de 2019 tenía que ver de nuevo esta escena
¿Cuantas veces he visto esta escena?. Y llegó un día que yo estaba igual.
Least we forget. No we will never forget those who have died in our path to freedom.
people always judge Duke by his politics which is a shame because he still is more popular than any Star today. You don't see Bogart, Gable, Or Grant marathons on TV. Duke? All the time!!
THESATURNSSC1
Because we've been infiltrated by communists.
The unit is a real unit. The 2d Cavalry is the longest serving active duty unit in the US Army, established in 1836.
Wonder how the 7th Cavalry felt about them playing their music? 😂😂😂🇺🇲🎗️
john wayne, john ford and monument valley
Ford made this film after Wayne appeared in "Red River". Ford said he "didn't know the SOB could act" until he saw Hawks' film.
*+richard hajeski*
Sure! In Ford's "Stagecoach" from 1939 Wayne did only become by chance the main character of that movie and not by skills . . . ;-)
IS THAT YOU JOHN WAYNE
The 2 songs the yellow ribbon one and the other is the girl i left behind me
Brittles: Lt. take two squads and defend this crossing.
Lt : Yes, sir! First squad second squad!
Brittles: Second squad has too many old married men.
Lt.: First squad Third squad.
Always liked those little touches Ford puts in.
john dates
My second fav movie of all time
Yes!!! I like.
GREAT
I been there!
What war was this based on, American indian war?
some dust got in my eye
Come on The Arsenal!
There will be a time we I will be First lieutenant...Yeah in ten or twelve years....Gotta like Harry Carey Jr.
What's with the second cadence?
Sí, creo que será la banda sonora apropiada para el día de mi despedida
Always wondered what would have happened if Johnson had not fell out at Ford. Because he was an actor of interest for Ford. So maybe he could have grown into a bigger actor when staying longer at the "Ford stable".
After that Ford chose not to use Johnson for is movies for quite a while.
WHAT DID SHE WEAR?
