    Everybody just carrying around their complete audio library doesn't know where they are going while on the go. I owned one of these, until it was stolen. I remember it fondly. The capacity was high enough to carry around more than you wanted to listen to in one day. It required some planning and time to change the library compared to nowadays, but it made you consider what you really wanted to hear.

    I've had my Sony NW-E405 for around 18 years now and it still works. In that time I've gone through around 6 pairs of earphones for it, but the last week or two I've had to buy a new Sony player as I just cant get the Sonic Stage software to work anymore on Windows 10, bought new computer a while back, its a damn shame, but not bad for the £90 I spent on it all them years ago, thanks for the upload my friend .

    I've got quite a few mp3 players but my favorite, and the one I still use daily is the Sandisk Zip Clip with Rockbox installed on it. It's incredibly tiny, sounds amazing, and has great battery life. Plus with Rockbox, it can do all kinds of extra stuff like play games, videos, etc. It can even play Doom. It cost about $30 new a couple of years ago, but unfortunately they stopped making it.

    • @KevinMuldoon
      @KevinMuldoon  7 лет назад +1

      +Keith Fulkerson The sandisk clip looks great. I like the idea of having a big clip to attach to my shorts.

      Kevin Muldoon Yeah, they sell new ones that are very similar, but I don't think Rockbox works on the newer versions. They're still highly rated and have great features, but Rockbox just took it to another level. Search Amazon for 'Sandisk Clip'.

    Indeed the best mp3 player for me as well! I got mine in 2006 and have stopped using it since 2008 because I had lost my charging cable. I just found out yesterday that the charging cable for the PS3 controller is compatible with my NW E407. It hasn’t been used for 13 years, I plugged in the cable and it showed the charging sign immediately. What can I say, 2.5 hours later it was fully charged and ready to go, all my music from back then still on it. :-) I found the full version of SonicStage on the web, downloaded it and it works just fine on Windows 10. Just needed to format (delete) all the music on the player (which wasn’t that much considering the time back then, haha.). Now I got some new stuff on it, so it really does work, couldn’t believe it myself.
    Cool video by the way. ;-)

    Omg I love Sony MP3 players of this vintage! I always wanted one cos of the portability and nice design but instead I went with a iPod for price/storage ratio.

    • @KevinMuldoon
      @KevinMuldoon  7 лет назад +4

      I never owned an iPod. I had one of the creative jukeboxes that came out long before the ipod. The last big MP3 player I bought was the Microsoft Zune, which I imported from the USA to New Zealand (where I was living at the time).
      I am still baffled about why the Zune is portrayed as being bad in TV shows etc. It was soooo much better than the iPod's available at the time. It had great battery life, a high resolution screen, higher audio bit rates etc. I later gave it to my brother. I'll ask him if he still has it as it would be great to do a video about it.
      You can still pick up these older Sony MP3 players on eBay fairly cheaply. Batteries are still widely available too if battery life is a problem.
      I initially used mine all the time, but later used it mainly for running etc. Despite it being fairly expensive at the time, I've definitely had my money's worth.

    • @evoGage
      @evoGage 7 лет назад +1

      Ah the Zune. I wanted one of those too as it were much better than the iPod. Back in the day I was really into audio players etc. Got quite a collection of Minidisc players/records until I moved onto iPod and then the whole smart phone killed it off.
      Obviously now with streaming much on the go. Its hard to go back to players like these now but I do get them out from time to time for nostalgia reason.

    • @KevinMuldoon
      @KevinMuldoon  7 лет назад +3

      +evoGage Ahh minidiscs were so awesome. I was still using my Sony minidisc in the early 2000s. It was quite a good one as it allowed you to record too.
      I agree with you on minidiscs. When I was looking for a solution to the software issue for this MP3 player, I noticed that a lot of people who were looking for suitable software were doing so for their minidisc players.
      I was always perplexed as to why it took so long for the minidisc to come out. Can you remember that don't advertisement where the music executive dropped the minidisc out the window and then it landed and it was all ok. That was played all the time, but it was many years later we actually saw them for sale. I'm not sure as to whether this was purposely done by the music industry as they thought sales were affected.
      But the minidisc coming out late meant that just when it was finding it's stride, MP3 players were coming out.

    • @evoGage
      @evoGage 7 лет назад +1

      I don't think it was that late. I remember recording music onto my Minidisc from Napster ('99?) through the soundcards analogue out. It was that or a cassette Walkman at that time
      I remember it was a good few years before we actually saw any MP3 players that are pocket-able! Them huge Creative Jukebox which you had were horrendous :D Obviously the downside is recording is done in real time and by the time NetMD came out, MP3 players were becoming a thing.

    • @KevinMuldoon
      @KevinMuldoon  7 лет назад +2

      +evoGage I looked into this further :)
      The advert I was talking about was this one ruclips.net/video/KDCwCtZPpUw/видео.html
      The band singing that song is the English band Reef (good band). On their Wikipedia page en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reef_(band) it says their naked song was recorded and used in the Sony advertisement in 1994. I assume the advert was played around that time.
      I don't think I actually got a minidisc player until the late 1990s or early 2000s.
      When I went travelling through Asia and Australia in 2003 I took my minidisc player with Mr with lots of discs. However, I bought the large 20GB creative dukebox when I was in Sydney. I didn't think it was that bad. The little switch dial thing was a bit annoying, but it worked well. It was amazing how many albums it could hold.
      Going back a little further, when I was doing my post graduate course in 2001 a guy in the course bought one of the first ever MP3 players. It was a tiny running MP3 player. It was only 32MB but he paid about £150 for it via eBay (apparently that was a good price at the time). I don't think he even had enough space to put one album on it.
      You are right about Napster. It took a while before it became mainstream and services like LimeWire became popular.
      It's kind of crazy how much we take things for granted now as we all have this functionality on our phones.

    i think the reason why this mp3 player was so great at the time was because it was directly competing with the ipod. unfortunately, the sony walkman sold probably 10 times worse than the ipod and so the budget for luxurious design was probably scrapped in favour of anything that was just "new design". the designs changed alot and i guess the main design team moved onto other products. Personally I'm fascinated with the way this thing feels in your hand

    • @KevinMuldoon
      @KevinMuldoon  6 лет назад +1

      I don't think this was a competitor for the iPod. iPods were dukeboxes. This was a portable MP3 player marketed as being great for the gym.
