Impatient Speedbird Pilot ?? British Airways 777-200 / Medevac Learjet 45 @ St. Kitts / Caribbean

- We have a interesting ATC dialogue here...there were parts of the transmission that kept cutting out i am really sorry about that !!!. Both BA and the Medevac learjet were about ready for departure....seems the Medevac had lots of mistakes on read back and it took a little longer than expected and the BA pilot got impatient @ 3:07
For any one wondering why the 777 rotated so quickly is because its doing a 10 to 15 minute flight to the nearby island of Antigua so the plane is light on fuel with about 100 plus passengers, the flights are shared with the island of Antigua where they take on more people and continue back to London Gatwick

As a controller, we would normally try to get the MedEvac out first. However, that clearance was taking so long that BAW could have been gone in the time it took to issue the clearance to the MedEvac. You get trapped into the idea that "this will only take a couple of seconds" and then when it doesn't go right, you don't adjust. Working RADAR, you have to adjust, since the aircraft are moving, but sitting on the ground, this isn't critical.
Lol that "big guy" actually rotated earlier then the "small one" !! o_O
notircm probably taking it easy on the patient for medical reasons.
I flew passenger in a 10-seater Learjet from Cairns, Australia to West Irian Jaya back in the day. Best plane ride I've ever had. The natives came to welcome us with spears and shields and singing! Need I say that it was AWESOME! I'm American and my dad was an Air Force pilot and he used to ride as a courier (not pilot) once in awhile so he could take our family of four to exotic places around the world. What a life and what a ride in the Learjet! I've been all over the world and never, ever get tired of flying. To this day I have jet fuel in my veins and the itch every time I see a jet to get up there into the wild blue yonder with them!
thanks for the information :) !!
If I was pissing away fuel listening to such a long read back with errors, I'd be getting on the radio too. Or, asking if I could taxie to the runway, while you two figure things out.
As a pilot I can tell you this is a non-issue. The Lear was told to wait a moment for it's clearance which is not uncommon (and the tower often takes a minute or two). The Lear is obligated to do the read back and they did not make a mistake and have to read it again which can sometimes happen.
The triple 777 was simply conveying to the tower they where ready to go and sometimes the tower will get the hint and let them go ahead. It is common for the tower to not want to reshuffle and so they leave things as they are.
Depending on the the heavy, they generally allocate 75-300gal for up to 15-20min taxi or holding. He was in no way concerned about fuel - it was just his way to convey he was ready to go.
Neither airplane was delayed in any way. Shoot, I have had to wait 10min as 6 or 7 other aircraft slowly go strolling by when I could have been expedited; this is completely normal, there is nothing here.
hmmmmm interesting !!!!
The 777 was CLEARLY ready to taxi, but had to wait, so how do you figure that they were not 'delayed in any way'?
The fooking Lear jet pilot didn't know what planet he was on let alone airport!
The heavy bird should have had priority according to fuel safety rules ffs!
That was impressive takeoff of the big guy .
thanks :) !!
The view and sound of the 777 takeoff is superb!!
:) !!!!!!!
Even if he got the call back wrong, probably still made sense to let him off first as the 777 wake would take longer to settle and that's inappropriate for a medevac. Good call by the tower.
I love how the B777 had a shorter take off role, than the Learjet. Talk about power 😅
Probably only two passengers on the 777. But the speedbird pilot was spot on about fuel burn. Their journey is based on fuel load per passenger and cargo. They have to maintain a safety calculation that doesn't allow for dickhead private pilots being fuckheads.
I can totally understand his frustration - given the amount of fuel those things burn just getting to the holding point!
The AIR is the fuel. AIR-PLANE. Flying over The PLANE.

ATC guy seems very laid back - am reminded of the time a Jamaican was asked if they had a local word for "procrastinate". The guy ponders for a few minutes then says "no, I don't believe we have any words which convey that degree of urgency".

Well, the speedbird had a point - while the Learjet was getting his clearance, the speedbird could have been off and away instead of burning fuel on the ground.
Who knows what was going on in the Medvac, maybe their patient was in middle of code It was a Medvac, learn to live with it, someday you may need on
"...while the Learjet was getting his clearance, the speedbird could have been off and away..."
...and creating severe wake turbulence for the Learjet.
There's a process.
@@thomasdalfonso9515 We know what was going on in the Medivac...we listened to the ATC communications! If the patient was coding, the Medivac flight would have been cancelled anyway and the patient taken back to the hospital.
That risk shouldn't be taken; medevac gets priority. If the 777 took off first, the learjet would have to wait another 2-5 minutes because of wake turbulence.

The take off doesn’t do justice to just how fast a Lear Jet is!
The 777 actually took off faster than the learjet!
Best argument I've heard on ATC was between ATC Berlin & Lufthansa. The Lufthansa pilot kept speaking German over the comms & ATC told him numerous times "you are required to transmit all communications in English!" Finally the Lufthansa pilot gets really pissed & starts yelling at ATC in English "I am a German pilot, flying a German airline, at a German airport! Why must I be demeaned into speaking only English???". That's when a older raspy British voice from a British Airways plane waiting to depart came over the radio & said "because you lost the bloody war that's why old chap!". Absolutely hilarious & awesome! God I love the British!
I need to find that video
I found the story and supposidly a Pan am 727 heard a lufthansa 747 pilot go off for having to be told to speak english the German pilot was suspended 3 days
Magestic oh the arrogance 😂
So true -- good comeuppance from the Brit -- typical! (English has been the international language in aviation since the early 1950s!) Get used to it, Herr!

The last 30 seconds were the best part of this video.
Yeaa
Arrogant speedbird pilot gets the deserved treatment. A slap. The timing of the Medevac pilot was superb!
Also this video was edited a couple of times to make it shorter so the b777 could have been waiting a lot longer. I still feel that it's the ATC fault for not letting the 777 out whilst waiting for the route clearance on the medivac
alan jackson they carry two hours of extra fuel for emergencies. That's two hours at throttle up
@@psychomonkeyinc
Yah. But why use it if you don't have to?
True
So the Medevac can be delayed for 2-5 minutes for wake turbulence to clear after a heavy takes off for the Medevac to be able to go? Note the Lear's super long takeoff run - very smooth for the sake of the patient.
Pros do things a certain way for a reason.
Was worth the wait, beautiful and quick take off.
GE-90 !!!!!!!!!
Hes not impatient. Hes responsible for an airline operation. Time and fuel burn is an issue. I'm a pilot I know these things.
100%.

@superlogistics1 tw@t. Obviously you don't fly nob.
It really showed the power of these aircraft, well at least the big one.😎
Nothing impatient about the BA captains comment, He was stating a fact that the aircraft was burning a lot of fuel sitting on the ground whilst the medevac pilots were pissing about. BA were, and always are, totally professional.
THEY WEREN'T PISSING AROUND, THE CONTROLLER GOT THE MEDEVAC'S PLANE INFO WRONG AND THEY COULDN'T TAKE OF, YOU FUCKING IDIOT. AND THEY HAVE PRIORITY OVER OTHER FLIGHTS, ALSO THE BA PILOTS CAUGHT THE ERROR JUST AS THE MEDE PILOT DID. ATC SCREWED UP. SO YOU STFU DOLT.
@Stance Pilot - YOU didn't listen either.

How is that impatient, the pilot voiced a concern that he was burning fuel. That's a fact. There was urgency, but not impatience.
He not impatient just can't tolerate stupidity
777 goes first over Mr foreign businessman!
It was a Medevac plane you twat, means it is transporting a critically ill patient to a hospital.
Carping about fuel when on the actual ground? Always carry discretionary hydrocarbons inbound AND outbound this often challenging piece of geography. Fool.
I really hate armchair pilots like you Andrew. Concerned/Impatient... who cares. You get the idea don't you?!?!
I agree with the comments below. We English speaking people are lucky that English is the international language for ATC, Flight Crew and Aircraft Engineers. Flight Crew and ATC personnel not having a good standard or using English has cost lives in the past. In this case, it was the Medevac's crew who seemed to have difficulty with the language. Thankfully it resulted in a justifiable prompt from the BA crew and nothing more.
Medevac sounded pretty American to me....plus an average 777 burns lots more on just a busy airport waiting to take off say yeah he was being a dick.
@@MaartenOosterbaan He wasn't being a dick, he was being safe. Choose your airline wisely dipstick
awesome rotation of the 777, awesome video my friend :)

Airlines have a responsibility to use less fuel - not only to save money, but the Environment. ATC also has a responsibility to keep local pollution to a minimum. Had the 777 left first, the LJ45 would have had a wake turbulence 'wait'. Airline also have schedules to keep and delays can and do effect transit passengers at other airports.

good catch and wow, that 777 can turn on a dime !
thanks...where are you from ?
I know, right? The 777 has great aerodynamics, especially considering the size of it.
Mohammad Raza the main triple gears also turn a bit to make a tighter turn on the 777 in case you guys don't now that
Mohammad Raza no. I believe he means that the wheels turn (as in left and right & not as in forward and backwards because of a motor attached to them. which would mean the plane wouldn't have to use the big engines under the wings to taxi). plus when turning a multi-engine plane, pilots use the exact fact that the engines are controlled separately and on opposite sides of the plane, so they power the right engine more then the left engine while turning left, and they power the left engine more then the right engine when they turn left.
hope that clears any confusion and I also hope that is correct (pretty sure it is!)
have a good day sir!
LOL the main gear is powered by those big spinny round things bolted under each wing
Can you imagine the rumpus that medevac would have caused at Heathrow?!!! It would not have been allowed. The BA crew were entitled to expect the same standard of professionalism at St Kitts as they get at home. Guzzling fuel going on.
I enjoy watching the big birds taking off.
thanks :) !!!
That wasn't impatience from Speedbird. That was a request for some expediency on all parties' parts. He could've been down the runway and into the air for how long that Medevac faffed about on that read back

What you goobers seem to miss is the Learjet crew's *understanding* of the clearance. Remember these guys are using headsets and talking on radios. You don't know what was heard through their equipment. They obviously were not hearing what was intended for some reason, and i don't believe it was stupidity or laziness. Add to that deciphering by ear the lovely accent of the Carribean controller. A translator for that controller's dialect would have been useful because I had difficulty understanding it as well, even without the static and noise from the radios, background, moaning passenger, headsets etc.
interesting observation :) !!!

Awsome time! Best vidio ever!!@
I was landing a little Cessna 172 at a major airport, and it took me at least 3 minutes to approach, and do my run out. All the big heavy birds were waiting to depart. They must have cursed me. Soon after that the airport imposed a $25 fee for any light private aircraft landing. A while later a light aircraft was defined as any private single engine aircraft weighing less than 5600 pounds.
Well done ba pilots. No room for error. They are seriouse and prof
3:07 no wonder that pilot is getting impatient

BA pilot bang on right. Get on with it guys. We haven't got all day!
the
Noted that the big one had a shorter take off than the learjet
What I - a complete amateur - found quite impressive was that the 777 used about half the length of the runway the Learjet used before rotation. But I was also very surprised to see how much runway and speed the Learjet needs before the pilot was able to take off. I was thinking several times "Why don't you rotate?" while watching it speeding down the runway.
Another thing that bothered me a little was that the Learjet pilot seemed extremely insecure. I would hate to experience that if I ever heard a pilot so insecure on a plane that was about to take off with me as a passenger. LOL
The pilot was not insecure at all - it's a remote airport with multiple and converging airways towards the USA, and a bit of accent causing the LearJet to take a bit longer to identify what the controller was referring to, especially as it's a tiny island with the pilot perhaps being there for the first time (as possibly evident by his turn at the end of the runway).
interesting observation
medevac....maybe taking a very cautious approach to take-off for the benefit of the patient...
People slagging off the BA crew, let's just run through this. The 777 may be idling, but even a pair of idling GEs that would be on that 777 would be burning a lot of fuel, he would have been given Engine start clearance by the tower, therefore, it's the tower's fault he's burning that fuel. Fuel Costs money, and not only that, given its the short hop to Antigua, he probably wouldn't have had that much on to begin with, therefore, would also be worried about how much fuel he'd actually have for the flying, and whether he'd have to top off his load again, which would mean more time on the ground, and a) ruin his schedule, and b) cost his company more money. The Medevac takes at least 3 minutes of this video to get his clearance correct, that's not good, so I believe the Speedbird crew have every right to interrupt. They're not impatient; they're simply doing the right thing, and at the end of the day, it's the tower's fault they've had to do that. Also, people commenting on the fast Rotation, of course it's gonna have a fast rotation, it's probably got about 50/60 people on board, maximum, and the fuel to get over to Antigua plus reserves, the TWR will be enormous thanks to those GEs!
Interesting observation....the scanner was chipping out at times so the wait was longer that what the video has shown....many people who don't know how BA flights are to the region would assume its direct with that faster rotation.....i have it in the description and people still ask about it lol

Fantastic Video, Loved the Medevac Pilot's "sorry about that Big Guy"😂
Glad you enjoyed it
See in Britain we would consider what the speedbird pilot said to be 'geeing along'. It's not impolite. It's a way of indirectly emphasising that we don't have all day here, and that if everyone could expeditiously address the matter at hand, that would be just lovely.
The rest of the world gets butt hurt and offended. Toughen up, sugar puffs.
Also, in the world I fly in, medevac flights have unconditional priority over pretty much everything, including speedbird's fuel consumption.
The medevac didn't seem to be in much of a rush.
Matthew lawrence Maybe not, but when I was doing my training I was told (in no uncertain terms after I inadvertently held up an air ambulance from takeoff) that you give way to any aircraft using Medevac in their callsign. My CFI specifically said "unconditional priority".

thanks where are you from ?
Very rare in my opinion to hear a speedbird pilot become a bit upset by taxiway or runway operations. I think they are usually assertive but polite. It seems that this crew was probably a continuing crew to Gatwick which will mean a very long trek for them.
Oh no there are a few vids of speedbird captains with their heads up their arses. One good one is landing in Toronto I think, they were given instrucrions to exit the runway after landing. When they exited they came on the micand abused the controller telling him next time wait until they are finished their landing roll to give them instructions!!! How bloody rude!!!
Although the brit pilots may have overreacted, the protocol for ATC is that you don't give instructions or disturb pilots while on a landing or takeoff roll, unless of course danger is imminent.
I flew this route 3 years ago and the crew changed in Antigua on the way to St Kitts, so I think you might be right about them having a long trek back to London ahead of them.
@@mizzyroro Probably so, but then again, controllers are abstained from giving instructions to pilots when they are either on a t/o roll or landing. They are too busy, during those moments. Toronto should have waited until landing was completed and then give instructions if necessary. Usually the pilot will inform the ATC of runway vacating taxi way unless there are some issues that ATC needs then to take specific exit points or continue to the end of the runway.
@@rhythmace1the crew's rotation is LGW-ANU then the next day ANU-SKU-ANU then the next day ANU-LGW. The crew that you see get on at Antigua will end up back in Antigua for another night after the shuttle.

priority, if and when both planes are ready to go. the lear clearly wasn't...
ONLY, IF it was a Necessity to be elsewhere.
I worked in the medical field for over 30 years, deaths occur because of arrogance every day in medical transport of any modality.
Fair enough, but a big plane isn't going 50 mile's..passenger's and baggage and fuel are accounted for.is a lear jet faster than an ambulance?
Great video of both takeoffs!!
That, was NOT interesting. It was VERY basic, and you are completely wrong. The BA pilot was simply pointing out that he was burning fuel and was being delayed for a readback that should, realistically, have lost the aircraft that slot (it did not have clearance "waiting for a call from SanJuan"). At any other main airport the tiny jet would have been told to taxi to hold and the 777 would have been released while San Juan rang back. Very strange.
This channel is like my Morning tea! Can't start my day without it.
lol ha ha nice to know
Wow! The 777 rotated earlier than the Learjet!
I'm gonna add a speculation I don't see elsewhere.... This flight has multiple legs, I think the description said one more small airport stop and then one of the London airports.
Not hearing any other traffic or seeing other activity and observing the airport size and adding that the aircraft is already extremely light, I am speculating that there is either no fuel available for him there or extremely preferable due to cost and time inefficiency not to fuel there.
I don't think one reminder that the delay is getting expensive and has the potential to turn into well over a hundred thousand dollars very quickly if things don't get moving soon is being impatient.
I think the difference in cost is fairly negligible in the great scheme of things - I suspect this is more about having reduced fuel for the arrival / ability to hold and increasing the risk of a diversion. But cost of course comes into it at the organisational level.
you are so right with this comment, it does have to do with the reduce fuel for the short leg, they do not refuel in St. Kitts ...they do that in Antigua which is just 15 minutes away flying time and the shortest 777 flight i think BA has on its network.
Damn that was a fast takeoff from BA.

@@skbenergy I love watching this video.
Flight plan for the Medevac should have been filed and provided prior to them getting in the plane. They need that for the fuel required vs weight. They were already fuelled. The Speedbird had a flight plan already filed, had the fuel they needed for the hop to AGU, and were pushed back. At that point, given the Medevac wasn’t even ready to go, Speedbird had the priority to depart and it wouldn’t have delayed the Medevac at all. The BA captain or FO simply stated the fact they were wasting fuel. If they’d known at that point how much longer it would take to finally get in the air, they’d have likely been actually impatient as this video implies. Turns out they weren’t at all, hence the dislikes on this video.
interesting take on it !!!!
Medevac had priority taxi and take-off, but he knew where he was going to taxi to, could get his clearance delivery sorted in between pre-take-off checks anyway, understandably the BA pilot made a suggestion to move things along a bit. And I think he's more worried about ETOPS fuel-requirements than about crew-hours.
Medivac only gets priority when requested for that flight. If he is filed Medevac it is an indication that he could be transporting a priority patient and that priority is required. That is indicated by the work Medevac immediately after the ident. However, if your'e not ready, no delay should be created for other aircraft.
Another great catch and video by SKBenergy. Huge thanks for sharing!
thanks....its been a while how are things with you ?
Every thing is good. I have started to post video's again, and making comments on other people's video's.
I didn't see or hear anything requiring the use of even one exclamation point, let alone three. I ended up wondering why this is taking up bitspace on youtube.
Yep, I don't understand the value of having this available on RUclips.
Utter incompetence on the part of the man handling the comms in the Lear ; it calls into question the captain's competence that he did not take over the comms. I thought the Speedbird pilot was very restrained !
While medevac flights generally take priority, the BA aircraft should have been allowed to take off while the medevac was doing a laborious feedback!!!
'Feedback'?
Sailor Man Feedback is what a pilot does - he/she is given instructions from the tower (heading, altitude) and he/she reads them back so that the tower knows that the instructions have been understood.
So noone gonna talk how short that takeoff was?
lol that bird was not departing direct to London but rather a short 15 minute hop to the nearby island of Antigua, so it was light
the 777 needed less runway than the medivac. That's some PWR!
Calm down Clarkson
Its a beast
Yeah, I was impressed by the power of it first time I headed to SE Asia... Much more acceleration than a 737, even fully loaded
Thanks to the all night ge90. Best commercial airplane engine in the world. Rolls Royce and p&w are shit
Pratt & Whitney are some of the best engines that have ever been built. The best motor in WW2 fighters by far. I would make my comments more thoughtful before spouting my mouth off like that
The sound of the takeoffs is so satisfying!
GE-90 !!!!!
I've loaded the 777's used on this destination and later in my career with BA checked passengers in for it as well 👍
kool to know
@@skbenergy And I still regret the day I left BA, it was a great company to work for back then. We were all very proud workers. I was still working on the ramp when the first 777's came to LGW , those big GE's were very strange the first time you heard them . And many thanks for uploading this great footage 👍
It makes more sense that he was somewhat impatient when you read the description. It was a short island hop flight with little fuel on board, so he may have been worried on that front, or that if they had to go back and top up, passengers wouldn't be happy. I can certainly see why they prioritize the medivac, though, just as they would a medical emergency (or any other) on any aircraft declaring emergency or pan pan, and that makes obvious sense, too. The real problem wasn't the medivac pilot, but the controller, to my mind, in the delay getting the info across.
thanks :)
amazing as always and GE90 ARE THE BOMB
777-300ER are better cause where getting them in September at Canberra international airport. YSCB ROCKS LIKE HELL
+Scoot fan/Transportation Fred cool to here
And yes the 773 are ok.
where is that ?
SKBenergy Australia
Im gonna ignore everything about all that and just focus on the Ge90 sound
Nice video MAN
O M G these are professionals ? I guess the medivac pilot is still in training as i got his clearance first time and im still training
Time is money! Good on ya Speedbird!
Safety too!
Nice! Darn, I so love the T7 spool up, and with a nice spray. Funny catch of the ATC convo!
thanks
Let alone the fuel burn, I hope there isnt a real patient on that medivac Lear......
That medevac was so slow reading...
Not as urgent as you'd expect a "medical evacuation" to be
I watched this quite a while ago and I believe I made a comment. Wow, look how many hits you have! 👍
kool
That 777 looks like a -200 , didn't know it can also have a ge-90
the first batch of 777-200's from BA had GE-90's on them
its an ER the 777-200s dont have the ranked wingtips compare tp the ERs
Good for him. Inconsequential dangerous twits in the control tower.
why you say that ?
