i think that was one of the most sinister points from the series, because you know that levinson and tesfaye want to make a us sympathize for someone accused of sa. it’s a very blatant “cancel culture ruins another innocent man’s life, people need to stop jumping on the bandwagon.” in real life the cases of people being falsely accused of sa are so statistically minuscule; it’s very evil and sinister of levinson and tesfaye to write a storyline like that, especially when it’s unresolved.

What pisses me off the most is Sam’s interview afterwards where he says Tedros is the victim…. Tedros. The man who held a woman hostage after physically abusing her for an undisclosed amount of time. He was arrested for “pimping women against their will” which is sex trafficking. And we know it’s true because abused multiple members of the cult ON SCREEN, he beats the shit out of Joselyn (it doesn’t matter if she wanted it, it’s still an abuser taking advantage of someone vulnerable), and is a literal cult leader!! 4:18 I’ve worked on movie and tv sets… It is not a joke. The amount of energy expended on preventing intimacy coordinators from being on set is pretty staggering. One show I was on made an excuse to fire ours, and then just never hired another one. Another show just deferred approving our coordinator’s flight until it was almost impossible for her to make it on her scheduled work date. I actually had to intervene and force the (male) producers to ask the barely 18 yo actress if she felt safe without our intimacy coordinator, which of course she didn’t. The producers hadn’t seen it as a big deal, and didn’t want to deal with the expense and hassle of what they saw as a stupid corporate imposition. But the networks and showrunners love to brag about hiring them and the veneer of responsibility they provide.

Here is the thing, *IF* the show is implying that Joselyn made up her mom’s abuse to manipulate people, that means that as a literal child, she spent YEARS lying and pretending like she was an abuse victim to somehow manipulate everyone on her team into thinking she was being abused, despite never witnessing abuse. Because everyone on her team knew about the abuse, it’s not just Issac who mentions it before her announcement. So either it’s a MASSIVE plot hole, or a literal child spent years pretending to be abused in order to… idk what, it makes no sense!!!!!!
I personally did not take that scene to mean she made up her abuse, I took it to mean she bought a new brush to keep remembering the abuse from her mom because she couldn’t let it go. But that’s the problem at the heart of this, the writing is just MESSY and makes no sense!!!

So I think you're overlooking something. I think she was raised by a genuinely abusive mom, but idk if that extended to physical abuse. But either way, she can have an abusive mom and still lie about this specific instance of abuse.
Like your husband can bitch slap you on the daily, and you can still lie about him punching you in the gut, you know?

The final episode really hammers home the idea of not believing female victims. Jocelyn’s ex, Rob, was falsely accused of rape, and the response to that was so unrealistic. The woman was immediately believed, to the point that within a few days the movie studio had completely edited him out of the movie he was in.
And then, in Sam’s own words, by the end of the show Tedros is actually Jocelyn’s victim. Never mind the fact that, whether or not she was “in control” the whole time, Tedros still believed he was manipulating and abusing her!

    • @mamaya311
      @mamaya311 10 месяцев назад +4

That was actually one of the few plot lines I believed because this is what basically happened to Johnny Depp and why he needed to take Amber Heard to court to clear his name. Still doesn't excuse the massive plot holes in the rest of the show though. Seems like this series badly needed that one more episode in order to fully explain everything (maybe), but at the same time I'm not sad that HBO cut it.

@@anto4380delaguaridaa I watched the entire trial myself. They go into detail how when that article came out, sure it didn't mention his name but everyone in Hollywood knew who she was referring to and that's why he was cut out of Pirates and bunch of other movies. It's also why he was awarded damages by the jury.
As for the second point, I think they verbally abused each other. However, when it came to the physical abuse part of it, it seemed to me that JD lost the tip of his finger while Amber's bruises seemed either fabricated or blown out of proportion. It's hard to discern given how much lying she did on the stand.
Anyway, tying it back to The Idol, my only point is is that regardless of whether Amber was abused or not, she did use the MeToo movement to try to further her career while destroying JD's. That's the only part of it that reminds me of what I *think* they were trying to portray here with Jocelyn. Although it was done in the most trashy way possible, mind you.

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU. Levinson loves to justify, minimize, or simply depict sexual violence as a myth women use for social capital. It’s in Euphoria as well, but for some reason I never heard any critiques of it. In Maddy’s episode / introduction, the show portrays statutory rape (between a *14 year-old* and a *40 year-old* !!!) as some kind of ~quirky~ and ~empowering~ escapade Maddy had: “When [Maddy] was 14 on vacation … she met a guy who was like 40” and the narration goes on to say “in retrospect, this seems kind of rapey and weird but honestly she was the one in control.” This chunk of the script can do real harm-it presents the possibility that even in a case where a power dynamic is clearly there due to a giant age gap, gender, as well as physical size, the CHILD involved could be the one to blame. Levinson’s shows normalize sexual violence, even in cases that should be clear cut (LIKE PEDOPHILIA) and when that enters the zeitgeist, that mentality will-and probably already has-put victims of sexual abuse in dangerous positions. Victims of sexual violence already have a hard to impossible time seeking help and safety-the last thing our world needs are popular shows that do what Levinson seems obsessed with doing: pretending that rape isn’t real and / or it’s something that woman weaponize. (Not to mention all of the homophobic rhetoric about closeted gay men being serial-killer-level violent because of their sexuality despite the fact that research has disputed that hateful myth that society concocted to ignore all of the violence that the queer community has endured). Can Levinson stop writing about things he has literally NO idea about ?

    Tw: trauma dump, SA
I literally just had a therapy session today where I told my story of being m0lested by my brother’s friend. I was assaulted when I was in 3rd grade, and he was in 7th grade. I won’t get into the way it happened, but I remember it quite well (i.e. i remember what computer game I was playing, I remember what Xbox game my brother was playing and the exact point in the game he was playing it, I remember what the guy whispered in my ear, etc.).
I didn’t tell anyone about what happened for years. I told my parents a few years later because I felt so guilty that I never told them. They told me that there wasn’t anything that could be done and that maybe I dreamed it. They didn’t want to ruin a boy’s life if it turned out it wasn’t true, and they said that even if it was true, he was a kid who was just exploring and probably didn’t know what he was doing. My parents are typically huge advocates for sa survivors, but this was a situation where they kinda failed me. They got mad at me when I talked about it after that initial conversation and told me I needed to move on. I never told anyone else because they told me that they could get in trouble and that my brother would feel bad. I had to sit in a car with this guy a couple times. It was awful. I finally told my therapist today, and he asked me what I was feeling. I told him I was mostly feeling angry that I couldn’t even confront him because it could ruin his life. What if he only did it because he didn’t know better? Maybe I was the only one. I would never tell my brother that his friend did that because I don’t want to hurt him.
Women aren’t casually making accusations. I am an example of someone who has a real accusation, but I haven’t made it because of a whole list of reasons, many of which revolve around the idea that I need to deal with it because it isn’t a big deal, and I shouldn’t ruin a guy’s life.
We did not need a show that would give more people reasons to doubt and blame SA survivors. This show is disgusting.

the thing that gets me is that if the narrative had always been a gone-girl-amy-dunne and she lied about abuse bc she's an evil mastermind and he's some asshole who did her wrong and is going to pay for the rest of his sad pathetic life it would've been soooo good... (i do love a female character that's just. awful. morally) but the 'twist' at the end with the hairbrush just comes SO rushed and out of nowhere with absolutely no build-up. like if the idol had been written by gillian flynn (or any woman. really) it could have been so so good....

I tried watching Euphoria and could not for many of the same reasons you’ve mentioned in the videos about the Idol. To me the storylines and characters in Euphoria are so overshadowed by the explicit and vulgar content/visuals that are shoved down your throat. I think it had a good base of showing the darker struggles of people but it just started to be unwatchable. So glad I never watched the Idol and I’m so glad I can just come here as a safe zone to know what’s up without like, insanely sensitive/triggering content lol.
Hoping you get some sanity back, you’re a real one for watching this AND spending the time to edit it (your poor eyeballs and ears). Hope you can find a lighter film to watch

All this also reminded me that, by contrast, Bojack Horseman actually does a great job with satire and portraying issues like fame, abuse, misogyny and mental illness in a way that doesn't feel exploitative or straight up awful. Could not recommend it enough for people looking for something on a similar line (BH portrays hollywood) but actually well-written.
