My kids forced me to hike the Appalachian Trail, in spite of my advanced age. Little did I know that The Appalachian Trail would try to kill me. In 7 ways. We were sectional hikers. We didn't quite finish all 2200 miles, but hey, we got close!
We did learn about the shelters, cell service on the trail and how not to pack when hiking the Appalachian Trail in Tennessee and North Carolina.

Thru-hikers don't have "dibs" on the shelters. They can stay inside or outside; however, IF a section hiker with reservations shows up, the thru-hiker needs to move outside to their own accommodations. The section hiker is not allowed to sleep outside of the shelter.

@@rwp722 Thanks for clarifying! We HAD reservations for every night... but we started a day late. We landed and were SO tired from travel, we wussed out and got a hotel for the first night before starting the hike. So we missed all our reservations.

@@LyfeUntethered You're in way better shape than I was at 50yo in 2017 when I began at Amicalola Falls weighing in at 189 lbs at 5'2" carrying a 60 lb pack up all those stairs. I only made it almost 500 miles to Damascus, VA. I came back in 2020 and hiked from Damascus to Dalton, Mass. Via flip flop from Harpers Ferry. ( over 1000 miles) I'm hoping to do a full thru-hike next year. I have no doubt that you could thru-hike pretty easily.
