I was born in 1954. I got my first pair when I was 12. We DANCED on our skates! Crazy Legs and several other moves. The boys always had a handkerchief in their back pockets. The girls wore pom-poms on the skate shoelace. We had fun skating to the Temptations and Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. St. Louis only had a couple of rinks with the wood floors. TYFS, Brings back beautiful memories! I miss those days so much.
I lived in poverty in 80's Ireland. I got the old-fashioned clip on wheels in a secondhand shop. First time l ever had skates. Started skating again at 41. Loving it!!
@@person3991 She says she was born in 54. So she was skating mostly in the late 60s and the 70s. I don't think there were many whites-only rinks left in the 70s... But I might be wrong. Given the music choice and location I would guess it was a mixed or mostly black crowd ;)
Wow! Who knew? I used to roller skate in high school. Now my daughter just turned 5 and got her first pair of roller skates. I can’t get her off of them! We love skating, but I had never learned the history before. Nice video! 👍🏻
I couldn't wait for school to be over so I could clamp on those cheap metal skates. They came with a "key". In Chicago we skated with ice skates during the winter. And roller skating costs money any other time.
My mother taught me and my sister how to skate in the 60's (roller and later ice skating). In my 20's I customized my skates, believing that women don't only have to use white, with black boots and red wheels! Still have 'em, still love to skate and I'm in my 60's 😄
These old nostalgic videos attract the best of the RUclipsrs in the comment section. Most of us want to go back (in time that is, even if we've never been).😥
This brought back alot of wonderful memories. I took lessons for 5yrs (age 10 thru 15) and always wanted to be a professional roller skater. My mother worked 3 jobs so I could take private lessons with my Rydell boots and beautiful outfits. Thank you so much sharing. 😀
As I st here putting together a business-plan for some investors for an indoor skating rink this video is most educational and I certainly will 'glean' new ideas and insights! Thanks
B-more back in the 1960's at the Coliseum on Fulton Ave. Everybody got skates for Christmas and skated so much that the streets turned white. Skates lasted 3-4 weeks. 😄
I was born in 53 and grew up using key skates that hook to your shoes. Got a real pair when I was 14, with black pom poms. The owner of the rink stayed outside with the kids till every parent had arrived. If you left the rink early without a parent you weren't allowed back in. Saw several girls get a whipping when the parents showed up and the kids were outside before anyone else. lol Different days. Better days.
Lol that’s funny, my grandma was born in 58 and she grew up on the ice skating rink (her dad was a hockey coach), she also used to roller skate, I really want to get her to roller skate again but she says she’s too old, personally I don’t think she’s too old to skate since she’s only in her early 60s
Skated back in the 50s-60s at Rainbow Gardens RD in Albuquerque every week-end, 2 hr sessions, 50 cents...White skates with pom-poms and skating to live organ music and dress codes and "speed" limit restrictions and there were waltz skaters...LOL I love seeing the skaters of today, the wonderful varied quad skates, their fast shuffles, moves, turns and the way it brings back those memories/feelings of conservative "flying and gliding" around the rink...It would have been wonderful to reach that level of skating and varied moves that sooo many can do today. gr-granny 40s Boomer
Roller skating has went through a complicated evolution. It's an activity that has something in it for almost anyone. There's figures skating (some call it artistic skating), speed, hockey, slolum, roller disco, rexing, etc. It can be done on a variety of smooth hard surfaces, but a maple floor with a special coating on it is the best (fast roll and not too sticky or slippery). The 80s saw a boom in the roller rink scene. Not sure how it compared to the 50s as far as number of roller rinks per capita, but I know 1980s California had multiple roller rinks in almost every major city and in some cases even in small towns of less than 30,000 people. Now there are hardly any rinks left. From an economic standpoint, the only way roller skating can have a come back is to utilize multipurpose sport courts. Old school rink owners would disagree with this, but the reality is that times are different. By renting out the sport court for a variety of sports and events, revenue could come in to help keep roller skating a float. People who go there for other things might even decide to give roller skating a try. I noticed on youtube that this is what they seem to be doing in foreign countries where roller skating is popular. You basically wont see a typical American style roller rink. If this concept works for getting roller skating to some of the poorest countries in the world, then there's no reason it cant work in the United States.
These folks don't skate like we used to in Detroit, Mike. If you get a chance, check out the full HBO doc to this trailer: ruclips.net/video/0BADk7n0x6A/видео.html Going to Northland on a Friday night used to be the bomb!
If you’re familiar with A/V Geeks, I’m sure you’d like the Shaggylocks & Old Time TV channels. Another great video!✨🖤👌🏼 *I actually bought roller skates after seeing ‘Sharp Objects’ last year. Did anyone else see that stellar work?
Now with all the crazy stuff going on, rollerskating is back! Not too good for the pockets though. I'm having a hard time finding a well made pair of skates on a budget. Really want to try but there arent any rinks where I live...🙁
If you dont have a rink, go for vacant tennis courts, gyms, warehouses, volleyball, basketball courts and maybe get wheels that are 83a or less to absorb shocks from pebbles and cracks and have a smooth ride on sidewalks
I noticed they left out his earlier inventions!!! Not to mention the African American communities that embraced and loved to roller skate as well. However with segregation and white people it was much harder for us. But there’s an entire skate documentary on that.
I think it’s weird we totally abandoned James Plimpton’s design. The biggest problem with the old school roller skates seems to be the wheels and trucks. But if we kept the clip-on concept of the original quads, changed the trucks to be wider/smoother, exchanged the metal/wood wheels for the newer rubber/plastics and added a toe stop we could easily make an affordable skate that works with our normal shoes. Vintage skates even had the rear trucks begin before the heel, making the space between both sets of wheels wider for more stability. Modern quad skates maybe have better overall performance but they seemed to throw out a lot of important things, namely the portable aspect of being able to use your own shoes as skates. Flaneurz comes close to custom shoe-performance clip on skates but they still have to DRILL these ugly “loud clacky” metal clips into the soles of the shoes for like $200 per shoes you wanna use, with and an extra $200/300 for the extra plate setup. Man stuff back in the day used to make so much more sense. The wheels of vintage metal skates suck, but if they simply changed the wheels and sold replicas of the originals, you’d still have a more accessible and affordable skate.
This roller skating short film highlighted how popular roller skating was back in the 1950s. It is a shame that roller skating is not nearly as popular as it used to be although lately due to the COVID-19 pandemic roller skating regained some popularity. I especially like the roller dancing and free style artistic roller skating in this film. However, this film highlighted the lack of people of colour at the mostly white owned roller rinks, who were not allowed in most white owned roller rinks in the USA during that time period due to racism and discrimination, which is very sad.
Good show bravo. Peace on this 656th Holy Apocalyptic day Amen. Time 3:17 Am England O'clock. With skating to enjoy the thrills we need to accept the treat of the spills with the grace and for the glory of God. We give thanks to our heavenly father God Holy God and our heavenly mother God Holy Spirit from God the son Holy 1 and all. Skate with love to skate safe. Cheers. Charlie X
That’s who taught me how to really use them and that’s who I like to skate with. Our local rink ran us off for not acting white enough in them. I can go to Chicago and be the only white person in the room and feel more welcome than my local rink.
With all due respect Miss, I'm white and l live in Ireland, l assume you mean "American whites". My people are rich with culture thanks. Come visit 😘. We don't claim American whites 😁
You are seeing some of those correctly. in the 1950s and 1960s, they had wheel grinders that the skating -rink employees would use to grind down a flat spot whenever a skate would have a flattened area on the wheel. It was great. 🙂 (Chase)

Skated competitively from 1962 thru 1966. Intermediate dance. USARSA. Loved it. Married my partner.
That's awesome. My mother competed rsroa late 50's
His dream needs to be revived!! love it!! 😁 And you don't need a ton of money to participate!
Thanks again for what your doing. It is a tremendous aid for us

Same time as my mother

In my nation the United States, roller skating was more popular than ice skating.
Fun drinking game: take a shot every time the narrator says “wholesome.” And by “fun,” I mean “potentially lethal.” SELL those skates, sir!
