Webcams are pretty standard to be built into laptops, but they usually use a bit rough and something to check the box for specs. External webcams are fairly popular today since they offer better quality, but we were always interested to see what's inside. Sorry AnkerWork, but we're cracking this one open!

Everything should be “User Torn-down” in Short Circuit. That would be epic for RtR and promoting taking your stuff apart as far as it will go… or even further if Alex is involved
Could be tough if they decide to do a full review on it later.
@@51498jrod true. But maybe they just go “as far as the manufacturer intended”?
*JerryRigEverything wants to know your location*
Yes. But only if there’s something interesting to see in it. The sensor, risc processor, and Alex’s excitement really made this.
But it's already done by Jerry, right?
I would love to know if the internals of things are hot garbage. Wouldn't mind more of these teardowns!
exactly. I dont care how good the product looks if the internals are garbage. I only watch reviews with a teardown aspect to them. it really shows all of the things the company doesn't want you to know or see and makes them more likely to make better products if they know people are opening them up to look.
Yeah
looks like LTT needs that bot cleaner here
And then water cool them
It's sponsored so he prob not gonna bash it he seemed to go very easy on it
They tried to mash so many features in they forgot about the most important part of a webcam, video quality.
For years I've been using an iPhone 5 I found on FB marketplace for $15 as my webcam. The battery is swollen and the screen is cracked but it provides a far far far better picture than any other webcam I've seen. It's unbelievable how shit webcams are, even ones that are 20x the price.
@@MezMez ikr? Webcams are universally crap. Literally any old phone will perform better
I‘m actually impressed by the fact how it manages to be THIS bad for 200$
I think the image looks worse in good light than the C920, and the microphones sound about the same as any other regular webcam mic.
The speakers sound pretty terrible. I think most internal monitor or PC speakers sounded better. They probably shouldn't have bothered integrating speakers at all if they were going to be that bad.
Ultimately I have to agree, I don't understand why they would even release something that does everything so bad to mediocre, for such a high price.
idk why they tried to put so many things into the it. Would be better off just being a nice webcam and mic
@@evilbred974 If you're going to spend 200 bucks on a webcam, I'd hope to get one thats at least 60fps
Yeah it was impressively bad, damn
The thing is, a lot of people are not tech savy and just see "number of MP and features" so the more there is, the better it is (in their point of view).
What they dont understand is that, the lower the mega pixel is, the higher the sensor can gather light for each pixel = better overall quality of the image. That's the reason why some phone like the iphone 13 stays at 12MP while others are going for the 100MP.
"Before you say it in the comments: I am not water-cooling a webcam."
That's just silly. We don't want you to watercool a webcam.
We want you to _liquid nitrogen_ cool a webcam.

@@HerbaMachina They made a script that run it from time to time... now sure how frequent.
Doesn't seem to beat out the trusty and ancient C920 to me, seems pretty low framerate but maybe a mismatch for the video encode? Why is buying an actual good webcam still so hard! 😥
I have 2 C922 web cams. They aren't too shabby. Especially now, since they're right at $70.
It's not, kiyo pro
These cameras tend to have an "exposure" setting that controls the exposure time per frame. The setting may or may not be exposed to the user via software. Often you can get away with not crossing the threshold of 1/30s for a 30fps webcam and boosting the gain/brightness instead, but the auto-exposure program of the webcam isn't smart enough to figure that out, so often you end up with >1/30s exposure time and your resulting framerate gets halved.
I have a really cheap Avermedia PW313 that provides manual control for exposure, gain, WB etc. and I will almost always get a better result than auto on a more expensive webcam (to a point). The C920 also lets the user control Exposure, gain, WB, and it seems to have pretty decent sensor dynamic range for a webcam. It also has a variable focus lens (unlike the PW313) so it's still a really capable webcam.
Camera sensors don't really improve over 9-12 months, they have a generation cycle closer to 3 or even 5+ years. (BSI took two years to come to smartphones from proof of concept, 3 more years to introduce stacked CMOS to BSI, 2 more years to finally implement in APS-C sized sensors, and then another 9 months to full-frame) Processing capabilities and stabilisation is what's usually getting improved.
so glad somebody said this... yes... why is this $220USD and looks and sounds like hot garbage. Why hasn't there been any development in webcams in the last 10 years?! whyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
You're basically paying for things that don't make sense. Like the two speakers, why would you want a two low quality speakers on your webcam? Especially with a webcam that is definitely designed to be used with desktop, because it is too big for a laptop. The same with the light... while the idea is neat, in the end it is not powerfull enough to make a difference when you need a well lit scene. And ofc, the resolution, while it is also nice that it is 1440p, what is the usecase? 1080p is more than enough for most webcam usecase (video calls, player cam..etc), and for cases where it is not enough, then also other aspects of it being a webcam will not be enough (lack of better optics).
Anker makes amazing products but I’m genuinely unimpressed by this. The video quality is marginally better than something like a MacBook and the speakers are simply worse. A $50 webcam plus $50 mic would be wayyy better value for money with better audio and almost similar video.
Im actually impressed that this is that bad.
I actually think the new MBPs webcam is better than this. Lower resolution at 1080p but Apples computational video is really good.
@@Xaluber I think you’re probably right. With the centre stage feature and their computational video with the 1080p sensor it might actually be better.
Yeah 1440p seems unnecessary for a webcam, and Anker definitely isn't using it to its full potential anyway.
well that's why they review the tech for us. Then you decide from there lol. This webcam is pretty bad tho, especially at the price point.
Thanks Anker for helping me prove that webcams are a scam and have not improved in quality at all in the last 10 years.
You're basically paying for the AI rnd
The higher end ones do indeed look better, Razer Kiyo and Kiyo Pro are pretty impressive. Logitech's higher end cameras have better optics too. This Anker is a fail.
Elgato facecam is pretty good.
not gonna lie. I was pretty pumped about this Webcam and I was about to get one until I saw this review.
This isn't really a review, just a "product presentation" of sorts, but yeah, even that already shows just how bad it is.

Why have a light that heavily increases the price if it doesn’t do anything? Most of the stuff showcased was just software features that OBS can already do.
I feel like they need to test these webcams in less than ideal shooting conditions as well. The problem with being on a set that's lit for video production, is these products that have lightbars aren't going to be demonstrable. A more typical office style setting would have mostly overhead or directional lighting that isn't well diffused. Unfortunately we didn't get to see that here.

THats not the point of Short Circuit. This channel is made to just look at products, unbox them and give them a "First Look" This is content you otherwise wouldn't have gotten. This would have never been on LTT unless they did a large scale webcam comparison, but that seems unlikely given the type of content they make. I'd sooner see them make a "Streamer" series in which they touch on many streaming focused products.
If you want to see a webcam review.. we eiher have to wait on a certain Professor or perhaps see what Harris has to say.
This feels like any of the cheap action cam knock-offs that advertise a certain resolution, but are internally like 480p and use some weird upscaling
Anker should ABSOLUTLEY look into either firing the team responsible for this, or demoting all of them. This is shamefull.
And this comment is just stupid.
The Anker business teams puts out mediocre products ... their Anker PowerConf Bluetooth Speakerphone is pretty bad as well (not all that loud, poor noise cancellation, unreliable, no Teams Integration).
@@coolspot18 how is there neckbands?
Looks like I'm sticking with my C920 for now.
Alex was most excited for the Risc-V CPU than anything else, haha.
Probably why the thing is the price it is. It's $75 of webcam, $10 of lighting, $15 of speakers, and $120 of Risc-V CPU
Uhm, no? RISC-V CPU's only thrive when they can undercut ARM CPU's - simply because ARM has been around for far longer, so it's usually far easier to just get your existing firmware/software running on it. The dev time investment must be offset by parts cost in order for them to make sense.
If you're making a joke about the price of RISC-V development boards, that's simply because of volume. ARM dev boards either re-use popular ARM SoC's, or are manufactured in the millions of units (Raspberry Pi - not to mention it's sold near cost to promote Broadcom's hardware).
RISC-V SoC's are usually in-house designs for specific applications, so development boards might have to create their own SoC that can run an actual desktop OS, and custom silicon is expensive.
@@WhenDoesTheVideoActuallyStart It's not only about what that RISC-V CPU costs; it's about what it costs to implement it. The price tag probably covers the R&D overheard of making custom-purpose RISC-V chips and AI software-type stuff. Basically, an early adoptors tax on a first-gen product that is little more than a polished prototype.
@@XDSDDLord As I said, if that was the case, there would be literally no incentive to switch. They wouldn't make a product non-competitive just to adopt RISC-V, they're a company not hobbyists.
The fact that the product isn't competitive is entirely due to other reasons, like "It'll probably sell and make us money anyway, cuz Brand™®" or, as you suggested, "We just need to get 10k units off the shelves to validate our prototype"
Btw, having all the adapters is great, especially for countries that are still transitioning from one standard to another.

Wasteful imo, they have regional shops so they could easily localize this product.

Yeah for that price I'd much rather just buy a proper good webcam and then spend the extras on whatever extra lighting/microphone stuff I need, good mics are cheap and any white light will mostly do... or just turn the lights on in the room. Not sure why you need speakers in a webcam
I built a webcam from a Raspberry Pi Zero, HQ Camera, and a peice of cardboard that runs circles around this thing (and for half the price).
I will never understand dedicated crappy webcams...Just use a relatively modern android phone as an IP webcam. Way better sensor, processing and flexibility..
I loved the concept. You have a pretty decent light, a speaker for desktop users, decent quality mic and a webcam all in one solution for $220. Basically giving 4 peripherals which every desktop user may need at a certain point. Also, I'm impressed by the amount of engineering that went into AI for mic and webcam. I'm however, not impressed by the webcam quality. It's the jack of all trades and master of none. A 40$ fifine mic, a 40$ lenovo fhd webcam, 35$ logitech speakers and 30$ chinese ring light will do a much better job and cost almost same. If it's primarily marketed as a webcam, then they should increase the quality of their camera. Give that camera a bigger sensor, specially after seeing that autofocus solution. Right now, my ghetto pi hq camera + pi zero does a better job.
I loved it how you disassembled it, I would love to see more disassembles like it for products going forward.
At least the BRIO doesn't need TWO USB-C ports for data and plug-in power like it's 1999. That's an absolute no-go for me.
to be honest, for the price i expected more image quality, it isn't bad but it is expensive, and the speakers and light don't add enough value in my opinion to justify the 200usd price tag, nice idea but there are a lot of better options
Its okay, but not worth it. Spend your money on something else
I absoluetely _love_ the teardown at the end. Especially pointing out the ICs they used. Please more of this!
Having side firing speakers helps with stereo separation on a smaller device. I was impressed with the volume that they put out, considering that they look to be about 2cm.
$220 and not even 4k? oof. Id MAYBE consider this at $90

Everytime you switch back to your production Cameras it is incredible to see how great the image quality of your videos are. Stunning
I've been looking to get a good webcam but none of these ones ive seen recently are any good imo. I will continue to use my old Pixel 3 as my webcam with Xsplit VCam. That phone absolutely blows any webcam out of the water.
For $220 that looks like pure garbage. A C920 that's 1/4 the price *at least* matches the quality.
Just ordered one of these for our office. The light will be great for staff who complain about not a great webcam but also usually sit in a dark room with just a MacBook Air webcam.

Test the light with a power bank to see if its any brighter since its likely to provide more current if needed?
I dunno man, i think the sponsors have been desensitized to Linus dropping everything he has in his hands
"It looks way better" it looks absolutely terrible. It looks nothing different from the built in webcam.
For 200$ and that size you can get a used DSLR that will look 10 times better and can be used as an actual camera (don't get cannon or Nikon's as they don't have clear HDMI out). Or if you want the convenience of a usb plug and play, just get any webcam on sale at amazon, it will look about the same. I found a 1080p webcam for 10$ once, works great
The rear speakers are probably for noise canceling the internal speaker for conference calls. For business customers, it looks like a really solid solution, since so many office PCs don't have webcams and/or speakers. Cover all your bases.

I miss the good old days of LTT, when Linus used to review down to Earth tech, like the Microsoft LifeCam (although this approach to reviews, with teardowns, is very useful; I guess Linus decided to put his habit of breaking things to good use).
Given that most people won't be using monitors like the 32 inch I'm typing this on, I feel that the vga webcam that I have (upscaled to 768p through the software) is perfectly adequate. I tested it on smaller screens, and the image is better than expected, with it only starting to look bad when stretched on a large monitor (which I doubt anyone would do).
I don't know why, but I think that most people would choose the $5 camera that I have over the $250 camera reviewed here.

And you adjust the brigtness by sliding your finder on a *glossy* surface right beside the lens?

They put a bunch of different socket types in the box for different regions and, as expected tbh, I don't see an Australia/New Zealand one there.
How does it look so much better when looking at the screen through the camera than the actual obs screen recording
2K ≠ 1440p
2K = 1080p

Honestly if they were going to integrate speakers into this thing they could have just made it a tad larger and slightly longer. Would have made sense to have them forward facing with a small bass radiator in the back.
I would love if they made the same webcam but without the speakers, made it smaller, so it would be cheaper and easier to handle.

Loved that little added part of "I'm not watercooling a webcam"
There's a noticeable audible hiss starting at 3:24 in the video through to the end, only cutting out for some of the mic testing moments.

I used my Xbox with Kinect way to long for this purpose, basically until Skype became totally worthless, and my kids refused to use it anymore to video call with me. It used to be so great to be able to talk to them from the couch instead of getting chairs in front of my desktop.
I have this camera along with Elgato’s FaceCam, and Logitech StreamCam - Anyone looking for an elegant all in one solution, the Anker Solution works well. Just like the Elgato, that has onboard processing, Elgato feels cheaply made and too light….
The Logitech StreamCam is the most compact of all the higher end webcams on the market.
I recommend Logitech’s offering for most people as lighting is usually not an issue or lack of speakers or microphones.
Buy the Anker if you really do need an all-in-one solution that has a good voice speaker.
What is that stand the camera is on at the end of the video. I like the aesthetic compares to some other mini tripods.

Question ... In theory you could live at like lower res and then the receiver upscales it with his own graphics cards through dlss to have crazy graphics but low bandwidth ?
Can't they use something like an ISOCELL GN1 sensor about 1/1.28 inches. Would that be too expensive?
Always enjoy Alex's enthusiasm!
Alex you must do the Water Cooled Webcam for sure XD
Having the other Anker cam film his brother getting ripped apart was brutal man!
