Director: Salvador Brotons.
It's an orchestra on the recording. On the score there's a piano reduction of the full orchestra (strings, oboes, trumpets, trombones, flutes, timpani)
I can understand why Dubois became professor of harmony at Paris conservatory. It would have sounded better without the unsteady and shrieking soprano.
That was totally the idea, the soprano represents Mary who is mourning for his soon to be dead son. She screams in pain, it is a theological metaphor... "Calle me not Naomi (Sweetness) but call me Mara instead (bitterness)" and it represents the way Jewish women used to cry out loud in funerals. You can perceive Mary's desperation and the tragic setup of this music.

Thank you for publishing this. Our choir is learning this oratorio and using this video for practice. If only there were a version in English!

Che meraviglia 🥰🥰🥰
I first heard this piece more than 60 years ago, and it was so good to hear it again despite a supposed "shrieking soprano". aside
Good Friday vibes
